How would someone go about buying a full arcade machine?

Are they for sale for the general public, or do you have to be an official arcade store owner to buy one of these?

=\ Paying 10-20 grand for a single game is a bit excessive. Even two or three is a bit high.

I know... but I just played Outrun 2 SP for the first time yesterday and was blown away. It got me thinking about arcade machines.

There's auction sites you can get these games from, and some places specialize in specific titles... there's a couple of good sites for DDR cabinets, for example. Some companies may let you order through their homepage, not sure.

If you still want to try it, you can look on the various arcade newsgroups for listings and auctions. Also, places like digitpress and craigslist occasionally have people looking to sell their rigs...so lurk and you'll sometimes find good stuff.

What are the buying models like for these things? I mean... do companies buy outright or on credit? It wouldn't surprise me if arrangements existed whereby the machines pay for themselves. The money these things make HAS to be a part of the reason the price is so high. They could probably commercialise arcade style cabinets for home console use... or sell console demo-stations/kiosks for example.

I know I'd love that kind of thing.

There was a shop not too far from here that was closing down and shifting loads of its gear... they had an N64 kiosk just sitting there all empty and lonely, and I never chased it up. When I decided I was interested it was too late...gone.

err.. well yeah, of course. you think only the arcade owner would profit? the machine maker just takes their cut up front.

Some places buy them outright... the arcade across from my store got the Tekken 5 cabinet right when it came out, and they said it was $7,000. I'm sure it paid for itself by now, since it's been about six months or so.

I've heard that some places rent them, so you'd pay however much per month or whatever, and then maybe a split of the quarters used? Not sure.

I think Arcade Infinity still sells machines on their website(updating?) or even at their arcade location in City of Industry.

Also, Snow Wolf: if you're in So Cal, there's a place across the street and down a block or two from the Fry's in Anaheim, that sells arcade machines and has a showroom that you can browse. Pretty cool place.

Interesting... I'll keep that in mind.

If you really want some cabinets, my local playdium (I think it's about to close down) are selling their old units, not to mention the prices are in canadian dollars, so they should be fairly cheap.

go here.. www.playdium.con for more info.

If you actually want Initial D Ver. 3 Namco is selling theirs for about 11,000 right now. If you go to Namcoarcade.com you can look up their locations with used games for sale by state.

the best deals are always to be had in out of the way places - small shops or stores that have arcade games that they want to get rid of - or individuals. almost never from large companies or places that specalize in selling arcade games (where they are bound to try to make a profit).

for me, it has always been about location and timing. that's how i got my Altered Beast machine about 8 years ago.
