[IGN] How to Build a PC Equivalent to the Steam Machine

lol i guess thats how they'll try to shill this thing at $700+
much better deal my ass.
bomba of the decade incoming, will make series look like a runaway success.
i guess they can always try again in 2040

Honestly, RAM and GPU prices are so high at the moment that Valve could sell the basic version for 1000 and it would sell out in seconds.

I wouldn't be happy, but I would lick Valve's boot and suck up the cost. Even at a grand, it would be cheaper than building my own.

The steam deck and steam machine are two different things. You can take your pc with you on the shitter you can't do that with a steam machine. Like I said there's a portability aspect that's attractive plus you can hook it up to a tv. I feel that if your on a budget and it's for casuals and it's stationary gaming then a PS5 will suffice. Most people that want a stationary pc usually have the money to spend on something decent that you can upgrade over time. The steam machine you cant upgrade the gpu over time.

And for those who want to take their Steam Deck gameplay to the TV the Steam Machine is pretty good option. Can't do that with a PS5. Most people who want a stationary PC get a PC with specs about in line with Steam Machines per the hardware survey. But if they want something they can upgrade then they are not buying this or a PS5. This isn't a one size fits all device.

why would i like to have a giant ass laptop sitting next to my TV with cables running everywhere? My TV is mounted on the wall, above the piano. I want less clutter, not more.
Using a laptop in the living room is simple: first, you need the laptop itself, second a stand to keep it vertical, which virtually eliminates space. You screw the stand in, so it can be placed behind the TV if you want; third, you just need to configure Windows to use the laptop with the screen closed. Yes, the process is slower than using a PS5, but not by much. Remember that a laptop is a complete portable computer, you unplug the cables, remove it from the stand, and take it wherever you want. Besides playing games, you can do other productive activities on it.
