How would you prefer Chrono Trigger gets remade?

I know, we'd prefer new games, but we also know how devs/pubs are lazy these days and prefer the quick buck remaster/remake over being creative for themselves. End of rant.

So how would you like Chrono Trigger remade? Remaster of the original just in 4k/60fps? That 2D-HD style? Full on remake with 3D models?

I think I'd like the 2D-HD style. Only to still hold true to the original art design, while also making it look fresh and new.
I think a proper turn based 2 and a half D style like Octopath Traveler would be amazing and I would buy day one.

2D-HD if anything…if not, then just release this shit on current consoles with some QOL updates. Can't believe this hasn't happened yet, just proves how out of touch Squeenix is.

And no, the Steam release doesn't count.
....and also, where are the re-releases/remaster of Parasite Eve and Vagrant Story.......and how about Einhander and Brave Fencer Mushashi?

I know. How about a game built for "modern audiences"...
I present to you... Chrono Triggered!

Honestly, the only way to remake it that would be true to the spirit and intent of the original would be a F2P extraction shooter by a Chinese studio with partial funding from Saudi Arabia and $40K mounts that's a timed exclusive for the Steam Machine...

...directed by Hasan.

Make it 3 parts, that span a decade of releases, at least 2 console generations, plus mini-games, 100's of mini-games across the 3 parts of the games.

Parasite Eve might be a licensing issue. I just checked up on it and read that the 1st game is actually a sequel to a Parasite Eve novel. So,there is more to the story than what was presented in game apparently.
I once read that Madonna held the film rights to Parasite Eve. Probably false though.

Can make it 3d, but stick extremely close to source writing material.
I'm ok with expanding the maps so it looks more natural and intended. ie lush deep woods, full expansive view of a post apocalyptic future, and a sense of actually being there.
I know some people out there hate real time combat, but I am all for it.
I used to seriously love turn based, but I can't do it anymore. it's too slow and boring for me now.
I really enjoyed Star Ocean 2's combat system. The remake.

Man, this would look amazing on today graphics If done right.

Think its time to play this again, does Switch have a version of this game on their SNES emulator ?
Sadly not. Steam is the only platform with a legit version to play but it's the mobile version iirc.

Yes.

That is what you call a remake. Full 3D. Realistic graphics. RT combat. A-list actor voice acting and an open-world formula.

That is a remake.

2.5HD remake would also be nice, but it'd just be a lick of paint upgrade.

If it has to be done then the options are

1 - 3D but cell shaded in Toriyamas style.
2 - HD2D but needs to keep the proportions of the original intact.

Regardless of which way the original game should be included. Additionally, in the case of a remake and not a remaster there should be an option to play the original game exactly as it is with the graphical "update"

Edit.

Absolutely fucking NO.

This FF7 remake style trash is not the way.

You can't top perfection. Any remake will just be a step backwards. As others have stated, just release it as is. As much as I enjoyed the FF pixel remasters, the originals still better.

Nah, thats just gatekeeping, Mana séries did great with some remake and DQ7 its looking really good, It can be done and its not even that hard, dont touch the story, put some qol on the battles system and focus on Akira art style for the graphics and we ll have a banger.

Ppl can always play the original on Android/PC or SNES.

I care way less about the graphics than the musical score. As long as it looks okay on a 4k screen then I won't care.

But that music was god-tier and I'm not sure it would sound better with an orchestra. Just remix the music with more channels and throw on a CRT filter and that would be more than enough for me.

Would be pretty cool if it was a co-development between SquareEnix and Arc System Works. They could use their guilty gear/Dragon Ball Z Fighters engine and use that to animate everything, cell shaded Akira Toriyama perfection.

Tbh i wouldnt mind it reworked similar to dqvii reimagined. Very stylish, the characters have that intentional design that stands out from the stoic repetitive 3d art designs i normally see. New game altogether would be best, tired of remakes

I would prefer if they don't touch it in any way, shape or form and leave it as is.
They already fucked it up with the additional content, it's bottom tier level of trash.

What I would like is a proper port with a proper UI, I truly despise the bars under the characters while in battle in the PC version:

Kinda unrelated, but I got a ultrawide monitor a few months ago, first time having one...and my mind was blown seeing Chrono Trigger on PC had ultrawide support. It was soooo big lol That kinda felt like a remaster for me

remaking Chrono Trigger is like remaking Back to the Future... anyone who tries to do it should be shot dead.
Why? You can always play the original. Why get angry if a more accessible version is made for younger gamers. Personally I'd rather have a game that my kids would be excited to play. It is really hard to get them to play an older game for long at all. They are growing up with Switch 1/2/Ps5/PC , I grew up with Atari. Old games need to be made more appealing in order for more younger gamers to be able to enjoy them. Graphics, quality of life, controls. If those aren't up to snuff they are more likely to drop the game.

Remaking games is good for gamers, getting angry about it is weird.

A bloated open world with tons of pick ups, stupid fetch quests and at least 100 hours playtime.

Released in 3 parts over the course of 10 years.

There aren't words for how much I hate this my friend. It hurts me.....it cuts deeply into the flesh of my happiness and rakes at my childhood with cold, dead, fingers.....fingers adorned with belts.

So many goddamn belts......

But I would be fine with HD-2D remake as well, although I am not all that crazy about it.

- In both cases though, I do wish they would include full voice acting with Japanese voices.

At this point just leave it alon. If it HAS to be remade, the only way to do it without ruining it is in the style of Star Ocean Second Story. A hybrid HD2D but with fully 3D assets but still keeping the isometric view.

Keep the visuals intact, add the cutscenes from the PSX version, remove the extra content from the NDS version because it sucks and maybe, maybe rebalance the game a bit so it's not so easy, or just add a hard mode.
I think it could benefit from visual enhancements similar to DQIII or Star Ocean 2. I felt that they enhanced the OG game vs detracted from it.

I like the idea of adding upscaler PSX cutscenes, but would leave NDS content alone since it's optional. Throw in some QoL changes, the mentioned hard mode for folks who want more challenge, and it would be a super easy sell.

I am not sure why SE doesn't do that but they took like 5 years for DQIII remake so they move very slowly.

Hmm. I'm not sure. If it's HD-2D I REALLY hope it's not Dragon Quest's style. There are a lot of design issues with that approach that would kill the pacing and feel of the original. I think something similar to the style they have with DQ7 reimaged but less goofy could work well.
It would actually be cooler to get a sequel.
What's wrong with DQ style? DQIII 2D-HD remake was great.

It's nitpicky so if it didn't bother you, it's not an issue, but personal I find the textboxes (where the English text is not properly condensed for readability), the superfluous dialog (which is not in the Japanese) and pacing of movement atrocious (Getting from point A to B requires way to many steps even though there's little payoff to it). This more of an issue in 1 and 2 Remakes really since 3 has a lot more explorative free roam elements at least earlier on.
If you want to see what I mean, play the Octopath Zero demo, then load up Dragon Quest.
That's just me though.

I know.....

....but Nomura is there somewhere.....

....behind a door, waiting in a conference room.....

.....he waits patiently, biding his time in preparation to destroy another beloved childhood memory......

Can you hear it?

Listen closely.....do you hear the telltale chime of.....

a belt buckle?

Never played it but heard good things about it back on Gamefaqs from time to time throughout the years, it's suppose to be one of the old jrpg greats from what I'm told.

I'll want a full blown high budget remake like FFVII Remake/Rebirth.

I'm partial to pixel art, but if Nintendo ever remade Earthbound I hope they use a style similar to the original marketing and manual/player's guide style

Something like this concept by Christopher Behr (2013).
