IMO:
2020 > 2022 > 2021 > 2023
2020 is extremely underrated and had some GOAT action games(DOOM Eternal, Ghostrunner, Streets of Rage 4, Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition). The build up towards the PS5 launch was pretty exciting too.
2022 had a string of solid indie titles like Shadow Warrior 3, Rogue Legacy 2, Sifu and Neon White. It was a very low profile year but indies are usually better than AAA nowadays anyway. If you only play AAA western games you're going to hate it however.
2021 was very average. Deathloop, Guilty Gear Strive and Rift Apart stood out as excellent games but the rest weren't anything to sleep over. People say it was a great year for JRPGs but I couldn't disagree more. Shin Megami Tensei V was pure tedium, Tales of Arise completely sucked the soul out of the series whilst simultaneously downgrading every aspect of it and Scarlet Nexus was pure weeb cringe. But still overall an average year it also had some nice releases like the one I mentioned plus Splitgate release on consoles.
2023 was extremely dissapointing despite it being such a high profile year. Almost every game turned out to be a dissapointment or straight up weak from Fire Emblem Engage to Star Wars Jedi Survivor to Final Fantasy 16 to Street Fighter VI. Im a roguelike fan and the roguelikes that came out this year are by FAR the worst i've played in the genre(Astral Ascent and Have a Nice Death). All around dissapointing and overrated. Forspoken and Ghostrunner 2 are the only games that didn't let me down this year.
