Amazon is currently having a giant firesale on a huge swathe of Marvel Comics titles on their digital Kindle platform: http://comicbook.com/comics/2017/09/19/amazon-marvel-digital-sale/
These are huge discounts -- 90% off in many cases -- across a ton of classic books. If there's stuff from Marvel's back catalog you've wanted to read, it's never gonna be cheaper than this.
Some possible recommendations I pulled together with a couple people just now for a new reader, especially noting a lot of the inspirations for Marvel's multimedia properties:
Note that a lot of these links are to the start of ongoing runs. For most of them Amazon should provide a list of titles in the series on the store page, you'll usually want to look at the following books by the same writer.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ARKCTES/?tag=neogaf0e-20 <--- the dark phoenix saga. one of the two definitive x-men stories and probably one of the most referenced across comics and beyond
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NAHL15I/?tag=neogaf0e-20 <--- 2014 captain marvel. this is one of the big books driving what female audience marvel has these days and inspirration
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NEW45XE/?tag=neogaf0e-20 <---- ms. marvel, the muslim teenage superhero, probably the best and most popular new thing marvel's done in twenty years
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GDHWB7Y/?tag=neogaf0e-20 <--- the other definitive x-men story, this one is about the time mike pence tried to kill them with the power of jesus
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DYVESVO/?tag=neogaf0e-20 <--- world war hulk, a standalone-ish sci-fi story where hulk goes into space, half of the inspiration for thor 3
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GDHWB88/?tag=neogaf0e-20 <----- this is the good old wolverine "origin" story, notable primarily for absolutely gorgeous art
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K0MHQ6Y/?tag=neogaf0e-20 <---- miracleman, this is alan moore's other super influential early book that was out of print until recently because todd macfarlane is a turd. this is kind of the original dark-superhero story
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ARKCRQS/?tag=neogaf0e-20 <---- start of walter simonson's run on thor. this is basically the reason anyone likes the character and the time it best manages to just completely own being a ludicrous norse mythology/alien-sci-fi mashup. it also has the frog who lifts thor's hammer and becomes throg. i think there's like five books of this.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AAJR2EI/?tag=neogaf0e-20 <---- runaways, this is the last legitimately appealing teen book before ms. marvel, about the children of different supervillains who band together to make a superhero team.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PSN1DOQ/?tag=neogaf0e-20 <--- frank miller's daredevil. this is the book that made people care about the character and 99% of the inspiration for the netflix series.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HSBRMKO/?tag=neogaf0e-20 <--- the original run of alias, the book Jessica Jones is taken from
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01A9WBW8W/?tag=neogaf0e-20 <---- Punisher MAX, the storyline that made people actually care about the Punisher and (I know this is getting redundant) a big inspiration for the netflix version of the character
