Humble Bundle Weekly: Team 17 (lots of Worms) - Now impossible to share keys

Even now, Humble Bundles are a ridiculous value. If you know of a better value, I'd love to hear it. And how much "value" does an individual really get from giving away a game?

I've found the bundles from Groupees to be just as fantastic as Humble's especially now that Groupees own problems concerning the lack of DRM-Free games and sometimes Desura Keys instead of Steam have been minimized by Humble's reduced focus on DRM-Free games and the allowance of Origin Keys.

I bought this bundle and I think the new way of redeeming games is great. After you link your Steam account, each game is just one click. Redeeming each one with a multi-step process was a pain in the ass.

If I want to give someone games in a bundle I'll pay the fucking dollar and buy them a bundle.

It is except I want to give away some of the games that I already own.

A week after the bundle ends your friend shows interest in the game. Now what?

So, this has no Steam-keys at all, the games are redeemed via the personal Steam-account. Is this new? Haven't seen something like this before.

Fuck that. There goes most of my future humble bundle purchases. It was bad enough when they used to have one steam code for the whole bundle. This is even worse now.

Tell them about Humble Bundle so they don't miss out next time.

If they even do it much longer. I know I certainly wouldn't try and do a nice thing if people were just going to bitch and moan and generally be unappreciative.

You're right. We shouldn't criticize anything ever. Just be eternally grateful than anyone ever tries to do anything that nets them substantial profits and we might be able to get something out of it.

Sheesh so developers offer their games at dirt cheap prices and split the costs with charity (and you decide how the split occurs) and people are upset over this?

Seriously you can buy these games for a $1 and people are complaining they can't give away games anymore.

If you want to give away some games then gift the whole order.

Gotta look at each situation. This one, it strikes me as extremely entitled and unappreciative to complain about something like this considering how great the deal is and that proceeds go to charity.

But whatever, I've done this before. I'll feel better about my faith in people if I just ignore this thread from now on.

Why does this make u angry?

That's not anger, that's derision. Most of the bundles I've bought have maybe 2 games I actually care about. The rest of them I already own, or are garbage that I won't be playing anyways. Now if you already own some of the titles they are essentially removing those titles from the bundle since you can no longer pass them to a friend. The ability to piece out titles that I have no use for was usually the tipping point for me. Now that after buying FTL for the 4th time I can't give it to my brother in law and give that indie zelda-like to my nephew because it doesn't appeal to me at all. These are all people that have absolutely no exposure to internet gaming culture and would never pick these things up otherwise. Because of these bundles whenever FTL 2 ends up coming out my brother in law will buy it in a second. But hey, if they want to decrease their potential audience instead of increasing it they are free to do so.

Well, you can always help the people "who have no exposure to the internet gaming culture" to buy the full price version of the game. devs will be happy :)

Dude, why do we have to be "appreciative"? You keep acting like because they're doing a good thing by having some of the proceeds go to charity that we should be grateful they're even letting us buy the games.

It's still a product and it's perfectly valid to have gripes with a product - regardless of where the proceeds are going to. They're still making a nice profit off of it as well. When the Humble Bundle first came to be it was a truly incredible little thing. It seems like with every iteration it's straying further and further from what they initially were.

The Humble Bundle is becoming a worse value and I'm saying I wish that it wasn't and explaining why.

But again, you're right. Clearly it's just entitlement and I should just be groveling on my knees in hopes that they'll continue to let me give money.

You were never supposed to do that in the first place. They just closed the loophole.

The Humble Bundle is becoming a worse value and I'm saying I wish that it wasn't and explaining why.
Just how much do you value being falsely altruistic?

To put it in more concrete terms, let's say you have Bundle #1 with games A, B, C, D, and E, and it allows you to distribute those games as you please. Bundle #2 has A, B, C, D, and E, but all the games are tied to your account (although you don't have to have them show on your account if you don't want.) You want games A, B, and C and let's say you value them at $10. How much more than $10 (let's call it $X) are you willing to pay for Bundle #1 because it lets you distribute the games? Is $X more than the minimum cost of the bundle that your friend now has to pay since you can't give him your key?

You were never supposed to do that in the first place. They just closed the loophole.

Why are you insisting that this is some loophole or deviation from what they intended. First off, humble bundles used to be a single key for the base bundle, a single key for the beat the average, and then a single key for the bonus week 2 games. They are the ones that heard the feedback that people wanted individual steam keys and they changed their system to accommodate. I didn't hear any complaints about the change to the system because it was beneficial to everyone.

Secondly, even if you completely disregard the first point, you are misunderstanding the meaning of personal use. Personal use is the opposite of commercial use, not in the sense of a single person being licensed to use that software. By stating that the games are for personal use, they are saying you can't download the DRM free version, or steam keys, and then resell them to make money. Since people are giving these keys away and not selling them, this would fall under the personal use umbrella.

http://www.duhaime.org/LegalDictionary/P/PersonalUse.aspx

This change is clearly because they don't appreciate the people that are going against the spirit of the bundle by reselling these keys. I do not believe for a second that they are trying to squash the people that handed out a few of their extra keys on GAF. Unfortunately, the people that resell keys will just find ways around the roadblocks and continue to sell them, while people that previously handed out some extras will suffer. Sounds kinda like one of the major complaints against DRM doesn't it?

Why are you insisting that this is some loophole or deviation from what they intended.
Because the "personal use" language has been there as long as I can remember and I have never once seen them mention "give away your spare keys" in a marketing bullet point.

Secondly, even if you completely disregard the first point, you are misunderstanding the meaning of personal use.
Am I? Did you read your cite? Bankruptcy courts don't consider giving away assets as a "personal use." No offense, but I think HB's actions and terms and conditions would suggest that you're misunderstanding their meaning of personal use.

HB's T&C said:
You agree not to engage in...distributing, transmitting, copying,...or otherwise exploiting the Products...in any manner other than for your own private, non-commercial, personal use.
(Yes, I snipped a lot of legalese, but I am prepared to defend each snip if you want to go that route.)

Let's look at some other definitions?
  • personal - 1. Of or relating to a particular person (my emp.)
  • private - 1. a. Secluded from the sight, presence, or intrusion of others: a private hideaway. (not applicable)
    b. Designed or intended for one's exclusive use: a private room. (my emp.)
    2. a. Of or confined to the individual; personal: a private joke; private opinions. (my emp.)

I also like this new method of activating games. It was annoying copying and pasting the keys and then manually clicking through the menu.

Also, looks like they made changes. Next to your key there is a gift icon. I didn't click on it since I wanted to redeem the games, but it looks like you can gift those games you already own to your friends.

Edit: Looks like I'm right. Underneath all the steam keys they have this:

Gifting instructions or something

Clicking on the gift icon gives you a gift URL you can send to your friend. This is great.

This is absolutely fantastic news. Awesome.

Edit:

Have at it.

Worms Blast

Worms Crazy Golf

Worms Ultimate Mayhem

This is absolutely fantastic news. Awesome.

Great news for sure. A solution that impedes key resellers and doesn't negatively impact legitimate customers. Kudos to humble bundle for the quick response.

Time for a thread title change - Now repossible to share keys

Why not split the difference? Make the Steam versions & keys available to the Better Than Average / Tier 2 buyers, and the DRM-less version to the $1 purchases.

Because Humble Bundle stopped being about DRM free and cross platform support a long time ago when they decided it was easier to make money by embracing publishers that won't sell DRM free or non Windows versions.

I have picked this HB ONLY for Superfrog HD... And I think it is not a real good game. But it brings me memory of 90's, when I was not able to play it and I have to resign to see it at magazines or tv :D
