I just want to post a comment directed towards those complaining about the comparison of Katrina to the Tsunami.

Understand, that youre looking at this entire diaster in an objective way, from the comfort of your homes. YOU ARE NOT THERE!

The mayor of Mississippi, who is experciencing hell now, has to put in perspective the situation he is in. The damage is truely awsome. Most likely the only thing he can relate this kind of devastation to was the recently tragic Tsunami. For him, he is in that kind of situation. Entire major areas underwater.

For these people, the world around them was destroyed.

I don't want to belabor the point .. but the tsunami had losses of life on an epic scale .. this will only have property damage on an epic scale. So, it is a bit of a silly analogy and understandable for some people to get a bit miffed at.

It may have been a bit more appropriate to say this is the worst tragedy since the Mississippi River Flood of 1993.

They are talking about evacuating the superdome now.

Wouldn't they have to do it all by airlift? From what I understand there isn't a safe route out of the city at all right now, and certainly there isn't a place to put tens of thousands of people in one of the drier, safer parts of the city.

Don't turn this into a thread about the merits of an analogy to the tsunami. Alot of experiences and news is getting communicated here. If you want to debate that crap start another thread.

I don't think this has been posted yet:

I'll rehost Matlock's pics if I have them cached.

The New Orleans twin span (I-10 east/west from slidell into New Orleans) is just gone... absolutely totally gone. This is MILES of interstate over water and its all gone now.

If they evacuate them it would be across the lake to the north shore. This would make it easier for them to get to other parts of the country where relatives can take them in as opposed to the current situation where they are entirely dependent on emergency assistance.

Egads, wasn't that same span jammed with cars just a day ago?

And I really feel bad for the people in the Superdome. I don't think they can possibly stay there much longer, the conditions will just become unbearable.

agreed.

The worse thing he could of done was compare it to another disaster.

It only serves to downplay the tragic events transpiring now.

I do understand what he was attempting to illustrate with the reference though. This is a 'worse case' scenario playing out in the areas affected. I, as a native to the New Orleans area, could hardly imagine things being much worse then they already are.

On a postive note, the parishes did everything in their power to get people to leave before the hurricane hit and for the most part was succesful, this should eliminate some of the travesty that could of occurred. They estimate that 80% of the city evacuated (pop. of New Orleans alone is 1.4 million) Thats a huge number of people to accomodate them to leave within a time period of maybe 48 hours.

I still havent been able to reach a number of friends who decided to stay. I pray for their safety, as well as those in Mississippi and Alamba.

Like I said in another post, anyone that's been across that thing knows that for it to be gone is major. No fucking joke, that's is just unbelieveable right there. :(

And I saw that CNN video earlier today. Just the saddest thing. This is gonna make what Andrew did to Homestead look like Disneyland. They had tons of wind damage, but could at least go back and recover whatever remained of their lives. This is gonna force some long-term relocation for thousands of people. I mean, they won't be able to go back for months, if not much, much longer. I just hope my family is paying attention to this, b/c although Miami isn't below sea level, we are fucked if there's ever a serious storm surge. There's no drainage/sewage where they're at in North Miami Beach. Floyd flooded out cars and kitchen, and that was just rain. With a surge, water will come in, and it wouldn't be leaving for sometime. And there's no second floor to escape to.

I am really hoping and GAFfer down in LA and Miss got to safety. And if you lost your home in this storm, I hope you find new shelter alright. The really bad storms are just starting up now, and it looks like the eastern seaboard is gonna be getting pelted on a regular basis now. PEACE.

Yep, and the primary way for people to get in and out of the city coming from the east. Many other bridges in the city are considered unsafe and closed because they need to be tested before they can be used again.

Areas where the flood waters continue to rise do so at a rate of 6 inches per hour, so even people who were safe before may soon find themselves in need of rescue.

I was talking to a friend of mine whose mother is still in the city somewhere at the Superdome and the plan was to get into the city and get her out but even with the connections I have it would be impossible to get them out. I've have been told bluntly "at best we might be able to get you in by helicopter, but once you get in - we have absolutely no way to get you back out so you will likely find yourself trapped there with everybody else".

is it true the Saints are moving to L.A. for this season?

It's no way they're gonna be able to host any games this year.

Like I said earlier in the thread. The I-10 Twin Spans was part of the contraflow system.
One of the prime evaucation routes recommended by the city.

(its the green selection)

The structural integrity of the high rise is in question due to a huge ship ramming into it.

The causeway bridge is thought to be damaged, but i havent heard as to what extent.

whole sections of the interstate are still submerged.

It will be very difficult to get aid into the city if all the routes in are inpassable

I think the tsunami comparisons aren't apt at all. In a few ways this is quite worse than the tsunami incident, as that just caught a shitload of people off guard and was in an area of lots of badly built structures and impoverished people. This, on the other hand, was in a modern city that had lots of preparation beforehand and is now essentially underwater and will require an insane amount of resources to recover completely.

Not trying to be an ass here, but didn't some leaders in UK and Spain also made similar comments after the terrorist attacks there that "this was our 9/11?" How come no one ever took them to task about those inappropriate comments?

How long will NO be uninhabitable? Can they even get all that water out?

Much of the water will go away after the levees are shored up and the sewer system is functioning again. The flooding can be dealt with, but not as long as water continues to pour into the city.

They're planning on plugging at least one of the levee breaks shortly with 3000 lb sandbags. As for the water itself, New Orelans has a series of pumps they use routinely to combat floods. Unfortunately, most of those pumps aren't working right now, and even if they were, it's unlikely their impact on the rising water would be signifigant. There's talk that NO won't be habitable for a month... it'll be at least a week before the gov't will start letting people back, if I recall correctly.

The Aerial shots of Gulfport and Biloxi...tons of damage

Just damn. I knew that this is what it might look like, but to actually see it, it still blows your mind.

Where this copter if flying I have been many many times. I've been in those casinos, I've played golf on the golf course along the water, I've eaten at the fast food places there, played at the water parks, been to the aquarium, to see this, its almost unbelieveable.

My question is how many structures are going to have to be demolished in the affected cities we are talking about thousands of structures.

Well, considering general water damage, objects that damaged buildings beyond repair, and then mold....

Yeah that's not looking too good.

Is it now safe to say that the French fucked us on the Louisiana Purchase?

I dunno if I agree with the "this is our tsunami" shit that the mayor of Biloxi is saying.... hard to compare 60-some american deaths to a quarter million done to the aceh region. But this is crazy. $25 billion to rebuild?

That's like... a war. How are we supposed to fight Iran now? :(

They don't know if it's 60 plus (already 80+ confirmed). They seem to think it'll be in the hundreds. Smaller area in size, and not as populated as some of the Tsunami areas. But what was hit in the storm, was just as FUBARed as the areas in the Tsunami.

Although they're not "completely gone," they're pretty fucked. Also note the cars out there. :\

HOLY MOLY! Those people in those cars on the bridge must have been scared shitless. I know I would have been.

FYI - the 80 people reported was from ONE county in Mississppi and it was an estimate.

A looter just shot a cop in the head who was trying to make an arrest. Flood waters, toxic materials, angry fire ants, oil spills, fires, looters running around with guns, and nighttime fast approaching: not the place you want to be.
