30,000?!?!?! Wasnt it 10,000 a few hours ago

The Superbowl is pretty much the only place for people who are rescued or that have been displaced from their shelters or hospitals. I bet that number is either just about right, or maybe even below actual numbers.

Are you sure that's accurate? The Colonel of the US Marine Corps of Engineers just said on live TV 5 min ago that it's still being repaired as we speak.
Its reported at http://www.wwltv.com .

They actually changed the text a little bit. It now says:
****ALL RESIDENTS ON THE EAST BANK OF ORLEANS AND JEFFERSON REMAINING IN THE METRO AREA ARE BEING TOLD TO EVACUATE AS EFFORTS TO SANDBAG THE LEVEE BREAK HAVE ENDED. THE PUMPS IN THAT AREA ARE EXPECTED TO FAIL SOON AND 9 FEET OF WATER IS EXPECTED IN THE ENTIRE EAST BANK. WITHIN THE NEXT 12-15 HOURS****

So which report is the right one? It's being repaired, or it's not damnit!

From NOLA.com

Mayor Ray Nagin issued an urgent bulletin through WWL-TV at 6:30 p.m.

Nagin said efforts to stop the flow of water at the breach on the 17th Street Canal are failing, which means the floodwaters will rise again.

Nagin said the waters will soon overwhelm the pump, shutting it down. He said the water will rise to 3 feet above sea level - or 12-15 feet in some places of east Jefferson and Orleans parishes.

Nagin has advised residents who have not already evacuated to do so as soon as possible.

Repair efforts have been ditched. Three more pumps are expected to fail within the hour.

One of the guys on TV doing boat rescues is wearing a punisher skull shirt and wearing camo pants, and carrying around an axe. Guy means business

Everyone has to take that 50-80 death toll and throw it out the window.

There are no official death counts yet..there wont be for awhile.
(God willing, it will be held to a minimal)

But All work now is dedicated to rescue and flood relief.

The number you hear is from Harrison county in Mississippi and about 30 to 50 of them are attributed to one complex which collapsed and crumbled.

*********

In other news, some of the prisoners in New Orleans lockup rioted and captured hostages. There is at least one officer who also brought his children into the prison (thinking it was safe from the storm) who were held captive.

I've heard many reporters are now evacuating the city due to looting and violence. They come up to them and ask for food, water, money....then they demand their camera..anything to barter to with.

Theres also reports of carjackings. People are trying to steal cars to leave the city due to the continually rising watres from the compromised levees.

WWL is reporting, though an interview of the mayor, that the effort to stop the flow of water to the critical pumping station has failed (this was the sandbag drop). All of the water is spilling over into the breach-withing 12-15 hours, the water level on the east side will be equivalent to the level of the lake (about 3ft of sea level). The 3,000 pound sandbags actually never arrived.

Uptown, the French Quarter, all will be under some (varying) feet of water. The only thing left to prevent this is to fix the breach and get the pump back on in the next 12-15 hours, this already terrible situation is getting worse. They're telling people in even dry areas to either get out of town if possible, and, if they can't, grab and axe and head to the roof.

Engineers are considering breaching a levee at another point in an attempt to divert the water.

This is all from an interview from the Mayor, who seems EXTREMELY pissed at the people who failed at attempting to seal that breach.

Edit: He's discouraging people to go to the Superdome, if possible-higher ground or even a roof or a second floor over there if you can't drive out along the designated escape route (there are people evacuating on foot along that route).

Its over... we have lost New Orleans... we need to just focus on getting people out of the city because there is nowhere left to evacuate TO in the city. We need to get a path for people to get out and start getting them out.

The city is lost....

This is starting to sound like a bad Kurt Russell movie....

You might have survived Cleveland. You might have escaped from New York. But this is New Orleans, vato. And you're about to find out that this fucking city can kill anybody!

I feel for the victims who have lost their homes and their loved ones, but the scale of looting and violent crime after such a major disaster really brings to light what a shithole the city of New Orleans is. I'm glad I never moved there.

I'm sure it would be happening anywhere else... This is life or death. You realize that right? I'm not saying it's right by any means, but you do realize this is about survival, right?

Fixed.

drudge is reporting that airlines are canceling hundreds of flights due to lack of fuel. no source is cited. can anyone provide info on this?

thx.

btw, gaf is a better source of news than the media centres combined. keep it up and nice work.

People there have lost their homes and everything they have had. Looting is all they can do to survive.

Even if there was fuel, there is no way to get to the airport as the entire area sis flooded out.

Well, 95% of the Gulf refineries are GONE. Wiped out. Airlines low on fuel is just the tip of the iceberg. It'll be the 70's all over again. Get ready to stand in line for your fuel ration people!

The city is lost....

Even with these latest developments, it's not completely lost. I do think that when this is done, we'll need to look long and hard at what is left, re-evaluate the city and the port, and determine which parts of the city are recoverable-focusing first on the shipping commerce needs of the city, and then on which parts of its heritage can be saved. What I do know is that it is simply madness to rebuild again-the erosion and wetlands damage done over the past 40 years should prove that there needs to be a different path that can provide longterm safety for its citizenry and security for its businesses.

Holy Fuck! The La Governor has ordered all hands abandon ship and evacuate New Orleans.

Jesus, I pray this ends well.

The LA Attorney General was just on the news denying people were looting, and he said it was survival because they were taking food. The news was like "We're looking at video of looters breaking into a department store and stealing TVs, are you saying this is not looting?" He tried to backpedal.

People screamed the same thing after WTC, which caused gas prices that night to go up to $5 a gallon at most stations due to speculation and fear.

Refineries weren't fucked on 9/11 though.

In some areas there are people genuinely trying to survive and are hitting places where there is edible food which is starting to be in short supply. The number of people I've got in my house is steadily increasing... 5 new people up to a number of 20 - mostly family. My house has BECOME a shelter at this point and I'm expecting to have a few more people once I can get people up here from New Orleans.

People have to realize that there hasn't been power in days now and much of the food in their houses has either spoiled or will soon - people need to eat and they are going to get to food however they can.

Heck I was just listening to CNN talking about a lady trying to take the fuel off of the top of the CNN van in MS. People are getting desperate... entirely desperate.

Except we didn't lose major refineries in 2001.

This caller on the news who lost his house said "it's the New Atlantis".
OMG. HE STOLE MY JOKE.

<Pimpwerx> looks like the coast is gonna be seeing heavy storm action for a while now
<xsarien> The underwater high-tech capital, yes.
<OrinX> Orleans is the new atlantis
<Lone> you mean, "great disaster of '03"?

Aug. 30, 2005 — Inmates at a prison in hurricane-ravaged New Orleans have rioted, attempted to escape and are now holding hostages, a prison commissioner told ABC News affiliate WBRZ in Baton Rouge, La.

Orleans Parish Prison Commissioner Oliver Thomas reported the incident to WBRZ.

A deputy at Orleans Parish Prison, his wife and their four children have been taken hostage by rioting prisoners after riding out Hurricane Katrina inside the jail building, according to WBRZ.

Officials are expected to hold a press conference regarding the riots at 9 p.m. ET.

A woman interviewed by WBRZ said her son, a deputy at the prison whose family is among the hostages, told her that many of the prisoners have fashioned homemade weapons. Her son had brought his family there hoping they would be safe during the storm.

That's bullshit - typical drudge reporting.

from the article:

American Airlines Inc. canceled 101 flights to and from New Orleans and nearby airports, said spokesman Tim Wagner. Of those, 65 were operated by its regional partner American Eagle. The Fort Worth-based airline canceled about 32 flights on Sunday.

They're canceling hundreds of flights to the area worst hit by the hurricane, not because of fuel prices.

Damn, I didn't know the levee situation was this bad.

on the other hand, I've seen a lot of reports of store owners price gouging people trying to evacuate. They've even set up a hotline to report any place doing that. And despite the worst of it, I imagine a lot of people are stealing stuff just to survive.

That's true, but you don't need that TV you just stole from Sears to survive in a place where there won't be power for a month.

There's nothing wrong with raiding a supermarket for food.

Smashing out a department store window and grabbing a TV is looting.

MSNBC: Tulane University Hospital lost generator power due to a lack of diesel fuel, and evacuation efforts may be attempted as soon as possible.

A new problem for the police is that they simply DO NOT HAVE ANY GAS and the JAILS ARE FLOODED. They can't stop the looting other than to guard specific stores. They can't take people to jail because the jails are flooded and they have in many places had to take the prisoners OUT of the jail. The police are in small numbers, the national guard are in small numbers and they are getting resistance BY FORCE from armed people in a lot of places.

Basic services in the city have collapsed. The city is not habitable. The looting issue is NOTHING compared to the massive refugee problem that is going to start rearing its head in the next 12-24 hours.

I think it has more to do with what type of people the city attracts, and the fact that nothing is habitable, probably the later more then anything else. After charley where most of the city had no power/water for 1-2 weeks, looting was a nonissue. However, the storm surge did not happen, and thereby structures that were left standing could still be lived in. That is a big issue for NO.

Structure damage (from what i've seen) seems on par with what i've seen in my neighborhood last year. Flooding however, is in another whole leauge. I am very thankful my town did not see what NO saw :(

Edit:

Also, you could easily leave my city.. not the case with NO

In the next 6 hours we are going to see nothing but raw chaos.

New Orleans is going to be an example of what will happen to much of the country when multipul disasters (natural or man made) strike.
