:lol

Wonder if he's bluffing.

BTW anybody see that guy on CNN with the dreadlocks and wearing one of those black hunting vests, with the crazy eyes, talking into the camera like a wrestler doing a promo and getting the people riled up?

It had no audio but he was saying something like "We're coming for ya!!" "No more abuse" "We want help, we want help!!".

Just finished watching Bush on CNN getting briefed in Mobile, Alabama. Anyone else disturbed that this move is purely political? You mean to tell me after five days, the President is just getting briefed for the first time. The publicity stunt sure made it look like that. He could have easily been briefed on all that stuff on Air Force One several days ago. I miss having a President that actually gave a fuck about about comforting and encouraging his nation. It just sickens me, and has me wondering if this is all one more red flag in a line of many red flags that make me wonder if this world is going to hell in a handbasket.

I promptly switched over to CNN after watching the Fox News anchor GUSHING at that "performance". "There's Bush with his sleeves rolled up and ready to take some action."

Fuck off.

I actually thought Bush's approval rating would shoot up after this disaster, but he's even botching that, christ almighty.

Yeah it was fucking insulting to me so I just changed the channel :P

If I recall, right after the storm hit Florida, it was predicted to go up to a Cat 4, and ride the western coast of the Florida peninsula and up into the Panama City area. It was within Sunday and Monday that the Hurricane continued going to the west on it's eventual course. Does no one else remember that?

The hurricane originally went much further south than they anticipated. This allowed it to evade winds that would have brought it back into Florida, and move west or west northwest and move horizontally. It continued that track for longer than they anticipated, and became a monster.

nevermind that some are already spitting venom at reports that Sec. of State Condoleezza Rice was shopping for shoes on Fifth Avenue in New York as late as Wednesday

And there are probably also millions of other people, maybe a lot of them on this forum, who have spent the past few days shopping, vacationing, stuffing themselves with food, fucking, or doing whatever else they normally do without giving a fuck about what's happening in NO.......

And are any of them the Secretary Of State?

hmmm how many of us here (for example) work for the gov't and are in positions to advise top politicos in this country on what they might want to do next? BTW anybody seen Cheney?

I'll wait for your answer.

Yeah, well, when those other people are appointed to positions of power and given the responsibility of protecting the American public, I'll care.

Condi better be sending those shoes to the refugees.

Right . because we needed Condi to operate the helicopter winches to get people off of rooftops.

it explains alot really .. you fall for empty symbolism. No wonder Dukkakis got in that tank .. it's what you people respond to.

Well, I feel sorry for the mayor of NO right now. He can't do shit but bitch now. He has no resources, getting only the barest of promised federal relief, and only able to listen to his citizens tell stories of horror. After listening to that radio interview, I have a lot of respect for the man for speaking his mind like that.

Oh, and Houston Mayor Bill White finally opened the reliant arena and george r brown convention center, probably something he should have done earlier, but its good that he did this. Hopefully Houston gets the resources to handle everybody.

From BBC News Service:

Adam Brookes in New Orleans said:
I went to the superdome and there are about 15,000-20,000 people. The pace of evacuation there is unbeliveably slow. We seem to see columns of buses going in but the number of people going out does not seem to change. There are helicopters which throw food and water out and men fight over the relief aid. So the elderly and mums and pregnant women don't get anything. It's an extraordinary situation.

At either end of the centre are armed troops and police but nobody is walking up and down the crowd that are outside. They are not trying to figure out who to give water to, baby formula, or anti-biotics. We discovered this morning that a number of children are starting to go down with diarrhoea which I think may be the most serious development overnight.

Elsewhere at the Convention Centre, there isn't a bus in sight. The only thing you see out of 2,000-3,000 people is police cars going through pointing shotguns. These are unbelievable conditions. Words begin to fail me.

BBC News Reporters' Log from the U.S. Gulf Coast.

We need her responding to and accepting offers of internation aid. For her to be shopping is dereliction of duty.

There's already a DailyKos transcript on this interview, but I don't know of its source. I have to take it with a grain of salt, but there it is. It's a shameful thing to read about how desperately he tried to get attention from anyone, but all for naught. This is an utterly shocking thing to read.

"We're getting reports in calling that are breaking my heart, from people saying, 'I'm in my attic...I can't take it any more. The water's up to my neck. I don't think I can hold out.' And that's happening as we speak. And you know what really upsets me, Garland. We told everybody the importance of the 17th Street Canal issue. We said, please, please take care of this, we don't care what you do, figure it out."

I'm not from anywhere near the Gulf, but I am still utterly stunned at what I've been seeing and reading of the situation there. And to hear the kind of dross coming out of Washington D.C. officials and White House aides is doubly offensive and sickening. This sounds almost silly as much as it is surreal, I still have difficulty comprehending the things coming out of New Orleans.

DailyKos claims a transcript of interview with New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin.

Wow I just read that transcript... INCREDIBLE interview.... sounds like if the President had walked up to him right after the interview he would have punched him in the mouth... which would have been cool... ;)

Ray Nagin should place much of the blame on himself. His city was completely unprepared.

What do you guys think of the new controversy regarding the term "refugee". I just saw a congresswoman on TV saying the victims shouldn't be referred to as that.

I think I agree cos I'm trying to think back to when I ever heard that term used to describe displaced Americans in a disaster and I can't think of one...

Well, we certainly don't need her getting new shoes and watching Monty Python shows now do we?

And most of you probably shouldn't be spending $40 on that PSP game today and should be donating that money to the Red Cross instead...see where this is going?

I mean just look at the "Donate to Hurricane Katrina" thread on this forum...only 50 replies...this thread which is mostly "OMFG" and whining...1000+ replies....

One who flees in search of refuge,

Works for me.
I can't believe the rescue effort sucks so bad. Unacceptable that there are still like 10,000 people there at shelters and on rooftops.

I think we should ask one of them if they care more about having a PC term attached to them than they do about having proper supplies and shelter.

I've donated about all I can. So you best direct that kind of bitching to someone else.

Hmm so no blame should be placed on FEMA or higher ups in the fed gov't even though FEMA warned the gov't back in '01 that something like this could happen?

NO and the state of LA knew something like this could happen since the 1960's.

Ray Nagin sounds like a man in over his head. He must be embarrassed that half his police force deserted. That was supposed to be the first line of defense in "Homeland Security."

If we were the Secretary of State and offers of internation aid were going unanswered, but we were shopping for games, it'd be dereliction of duty.

Can you blame them? It's only now that they are just starting to get outside support... the command chain fell apart amost immediately.

So what have you donated? I'm going to donate some clothes, and some of my next paycheck (supposedly I can't give blood).

Would you prefer people let out their anger and frustration in the POST YOUR PIC NOW topic instead? People are (rightly) mad at the absolute abyssmal response by the government that supposedly looks out for us in our time of need, and our LEADERS that don't want their vacations disrupted and going out buying new shoes.

You and others that are trying to sidestep how serious a disaster this is, and the complete "we'll get to it later" attitude of our leaders disgust me.

They are REFUGEES! WTF else can they be?

Well what was the last American disaster that wiped out a city and left so many folks homeless, with only the clothes on their back and things they are carrying left?

Footage of Bush right now on FOX with his arms draped around and trying to comfort two (rather attractive) black women in Biloxi....hmm trying to score some political points maybe?

Actually I do. The whole idea of getting sworn in is to "Serve and Protect" and all that. The city of NO pay thier salaries .. and when they needed them the most, they got let down. It's kind of sad. I can not remember a time where police officers have FLED during a time of crisis. They sure didn't during the LA riots or 9/11.

Maybe you're confused about the levees. They're things which must be maintained, not things that can be definitively finished. They sink over time, they erode over time. No matter how fortified they could be made in previous years, they needed constant funding in order to stay strong. That funding was cut by the gov't, not by the city or the state.

That's ridiculous. The cops are left to fend for themselves. They have no food or water either. During 9/11, they were in harm's way but they were not shot at by people they were trying to rescue and they could go home at night to food, water, and family.

The New Orleans cops do not have that luxury.
