Hydro Thunder For Xbox Live Making Surprise Appearance At PAX? Update: Yes!

Midway's classic speedboat racer Hydro Thunder may be making its way to Xbox Live Arcade soon. And it may be playable at PAX East even sooner—as in tomorrow.

According to a report from /gamer, the Xbox 360 booth at PAX East features at least one kiosk with a playable copy of Hydro Thunder, indicating an XBLA port of the 1999 arcade original—which saw versions on the Dreamcast, PC, Nintendo 64 and PlayStation—may debut at the expo.

Arcade game specialists Raw Thrills released a spiritual successor to Hydro Thunder last year, with H2Overdrive bringing similar over-the-top, high-speed boat racing to arcades. H2Overdrive was developed by some of the original Hydro Thunder team. No word yet on whether that spectacular looking follow-up is coming home.

Since /gamer's evidence consists of a rather grainy photograph purported to be from the PAX East show floor and Microsoft reps have not yet responded to requests for confirmation, we're calling this rumor for now. But we'll be all over PAX East starting Friday, so we'll know soon enough.

Update: Xbox Live's Major Nelson confirms that "Hydro Thunder Hurricane" will be playable at the PAX East Xbox Booth. Go go gooooo!!!

This is great, but I'd rather hear news about a port for H2Overdrive, that game is even better than the original Thunder.

isn't there a pseudo sequel out in the arcades now? I know I played an updated version of this in the arcade last summer...

Anyway - this is awesome news - HT was one of my most played DC games at launch. Can't wait to see screenshots :D

Two words that take me back to a time of blue skies and Dreamcast magic.
A great game I still play today...... can't wait for it to land on XBLA.

(Now if Capcom would just see fit to release Power Stone 1 & 2)

Capcom may be wary of the Classic Arcade Re-release Cycle that has consumed so many publishers before them.

1) Vocal community constantly ask for *insert title* to be re-released on XBLA.

2) Publisher relents, announces title, hype builds.

3) Game released. People don't actually buy the game due to *insert bullshit excuse*.

4) Go to 1.

I remember reading this a long time ago, but it don't get no more official than being playable today - sooooooo awesome. :D

Really loved this game on DC, and expect the same here once they stick to excellent ports like they've done so far!

Trust no one. Eat steaks.
Never played it before but I would buy it if it had a chance at leading to a revival of the Rush series on XBLA. Thrashed Rush 2049 on DC and got all Golds forwards, Reverse and Stunt. Now I want HD home versions of Rush and Alcatraz Edition!!!

Yeah, it won't be.

Make a console port of H2Overdrive!!

Why not? Making a port of a 3D game "HD" is as simple as flipping a switch. It'd be ridiculous if it wasn't HD. Heck, anything less than a perfect 1080p/60fps would be embarissing, tbh.

question for those who played it on dreamcast, how did you do the little jump? in arcades you'd have to pull the accelerator thing back and hit boost in a quick jerk. I'm sure they'd use the same dc control or similar for a 360 controller

Please have online mulltiplayer, please have online multiplayer, please have online multiplayer.

Oh and whoever suggested a bit of Jet Set (Grind) Radio, that wouldn't go amiss either. I'm still sad JSRF never showed up on Xbox Originals.

If this is some kind of HD Remix, at least on the level of OutRun Online Arcade or even Rez HD, then HELL YEAH. With a capital HELL.

Otherwise, meh. The version on Midway Arcade Treasures is enough for me.

I had a buddy who would start talking like the Hydro Thunder announcer when he got drunk.

Accelerate with the right trigger, let go completely, hit the brake (L trigger) and immediately hit A to boost. That would propel you into a jump.

sweet. I figured it was either that or they made it a simple button press like mario kart, which is L for hop. I can't wait to play this, they better not make us wait long
