Hygiene is a Social Construct, Not Showered in Five Years

NPR interviewed James Hamblin, an author and a physician, who quit showering in 2016...

When NPR asks him "How did your identity as a cisgendered white male influence your reporting on this subject?", he replies with the following.

"Probably one of the main reasons I've been able to go so long without using [a shower] is because of the privilege of my position in American society.

Next, he is going to start shitting on the sidewalk to see how far he can push his white privilege.

Imagine seeing a doctor who hasn't bathed in 5 years.

I understand the idea of "going natural" and regaining some of the human body's "self cleaning" capabilities.

That said, I would never want to give up showering because it just feels great. Refreshing. Relaxing. Therapeutic. And, you don't have to worry about smelling like a decaying corpse.

I heard of showering with only water, which can work for a lot of people, but definitely not showering at all. That’s how you get skin infections. He’s going to fall down once and die

True. I mean, even taking a dip in a public pool here and there would be better than not showering at all. Get clean with chlorine!

If you don’t shower or, bare minimum, bidet after you shit...

...look I’m not some sophisticated kinda person. I just don’t like stewing in filth. Shit then shower. I get it, maybe you can’t always shower immediately. Fine. Take the first opportunity you can, though. The fuck is wrong with you? Wash your goddamn ass. Rethink all sorts of norms if you must but not your stench for fuck’s sake. Wash your ass.

What do you germophobes do when camping, just take twice as much xanax to get you through the ordeal?

I'm genuinely curious to know what he smells like.

Also surprised to see that he's a real MD, figured he's be a naturopath or chiropractor

I used to work with a guy who didn't seem to shower. He wore glasses that always had dirty lenses and his hair was so oily, it would drip on his shirts and leave oil stains.

I’ve talked to people who stopped using shampoo they said their hair was hella oily when they started but then it went back to normal.

Seems like your coworker had other issues.

Camping for longer than 3-5 days and I/family are washing in the river or portable shower we carry. How hard is it to heat up a billy of water and fill your portable shower that costs $5 *we have a powered version that heats and pressurises the water off our 4wd.

When you have young kids and hike/fish/kayak you're gonna get dirty and sweaty AF. Sometimes if we camp near the beach it's just a simply jump in the ocean and a quick freshwater cleanse after. Example we camped/travelled by 4wd for 3.5 weeks straight with our two kids, you want a shower when doing that, no xanax required mate.

fucking gross, imagine if this dude was your physician

take a shower every day, use lots of soap

If your goal is healthy skin, that's actually the worst advice you could give. The more you scrub and wash, the more you mess up the skin's natural oil production, and it'll increase to compensate.

So you're basically just increasing the grime production, increasing the need to shower. Skin doesn't want to be dry.

I bet my house that this guy doesn't technically shower himself but still use a sponge, water and soap to clean the critical body parts, thers is no way this guy doesn't wash anything without smelling like cunth's socks.

I worked with a guy way back around 2010 that swore he only showered once or so a week and never used soap. Claimed women loved his scent and hair. Dude straight up smelled like a butthole. Had pimples everywhere.

Science and the slow march of civilization gave us running water and soap people. Please use it.

That's one of the most expensive aftershaves out there, what we're you thinking?

Even cats lick themselves in order to clean themselves. I mean twice a day is too much but at least once a day should be the minimum.

Some guy in our apartment building smelled so bad the hallway was contaminated I couldn't even walk back the same way. Its like he sprayed air of anime con cologne all over his body.

For anyone wondering what he smells like, he says this in another interview...

“My girlfriend says I smell like a ‘person’. Some people tell me it’s similar to when they go camping for a few days they don’t smell like body odour but they don’t smell fresh.
