Hype Check - Black Ops 3

Wasn't going to bother with it but given the amount of content the game seems to have I preordered it yesterday. First Call of Duty I have preordered since World at War.

I'll mostly play Star Wars Battlefront in third person so this will probably be my go to first person shooter for a while now given I'm done with Halo 5.

I enjoyed the beta much more than I expected to, but it's still just gonna be a weekend Redbox rental. Besides, Fallout is just 4 days later!

Everyone I know thought ghosts was dog shit, Advanced Warfare was just meh or only played it for zombies and they are otherwise hyped for Black ops 3. With some skepticism as well though.

The local co-op features have brought me back to Call of Duty. RIP Halo. Still might wait awhile to buy to see if it reality lives up to the hype.

Plus I've been going through a 360 nostalgia greatest hits phase lately. Just finished the Mass Effect trilogy and started up on Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth. I've no shortage of things to play.

Treyarch is the most tenured CoD developer and it's been 3 years since their last game, so I'm fully expecting big things for sure from this one.

I'm not at some insane hype level for it though, for a couple reasons...

There's a full campaign with co-op, a full zombie based co-op campaign with story, and the multiplayer that you can get hundreds of hours of fun from if you enjoy it and spend time unlocking all the weapons and add ons.

Sounds great, thanks. If I suck at Halo MP, any chance I can do better with this game? I'm horrible with aiming in halo...

It's..not really like Titanfall in a sense that Titanfall has more verticality, much bigger maps and more walls to chain runs on and build momentum. Black Ops 3 has wall running and a little booster pack but its not as...well, the game isn't focused so much around the movement like Titanfall. You get to parts of the map mostly be running on the ground, with a few dangerous routes open to wall running. Still a lot of fun though. I felt as if my deaths were more my fault with positioning unlike the last couple of iterations where enemy positions are so unpredictable. It is more like Black Ops 2 than AW or Ghosts.

Thank you for this. Hmm, guess I will have to look up some more gameplay to make a decision.

Looks pretty mediocre, not all too different AW.
Honestly it's pretty damn different, especially the overall flow of the game. At least that's what I got from the beta. Treyarch definitely makes the best CODs IMO, especially nowadays. So my hype for this is about as high, if not higher, than BLOPS II.

I'm really looking forward to it.

Has a decent amount of content as well.

-Campaign - Apparently much longer than usual, solo or 4 player co-op.
-Safe House - Fully customize your campaign soldiers appearance.
-Nightmare -
Rumored. Play through the campaign again fighting zombies, yes please.
-Zombies - Shadows of Evil.
-Dead Ops Arcade 2 - Top down zombies shooter.
-Free run mode - Maps or courses to race through using the new movement system.
-Multiplayer - 12 maps, 10 modes.
-Gunsmith - Create your own weapon skins, 64 layers. Which you can publish/download.
-Theater Mode.

Also, apparently one of the multiplayer maps is set in WW2, but it's a simulation. So maybe the campaign has some simulated moments in WW2 as well. Hopefully they have split timelines like they used to have and not just modern/future missions.

sounds like the GOTY for first person shooters

Lost interest after MW 2. Tried AW and really enjoyed it. Never been a fan of the black ops series. Missed the beta so will wait on feedback and reviews. Look forward to the next title from Sledgehammer.

Totally disagree.

To me, it's largely AW with wall running, sans the celebrity, some extra tweaks and another year of development / tightening.

Personally, I expected more, hence my view.

Did you get to play the beta?

It's nothing about agreeing or disagreeing. BO3 plays nothing like AW besides the fact that you shoot people in first person. It plays exactly like BO2 with added scarce moments of wall-running and a bit more verticality.

Honestly for $60 this is a game with a hell of a lot of content.

I'm looking forward to it due to the sheer quantity of content available in this one. I was a little skeptical of the 3-year cycle, but it may pay off with the stronger development teams.

But having that said... Call of Duty is my guilty pleasure. A ton of my friends are passing this year.

Review embargo ends on release day (Thursday). Still trying to get a couple more confirmations of the time before we throw up a timer (12:01am PDT). Note that CoD has had release day embargos pretty often.

I'm looking forward to playing it. I don't have the same commitment level to play zombies or MP any longer, but I'm always impressed by the amount of content provided.

I'm looking forward to it, really enjoyed my time with the beta. Forgot it was a Friday release though, was just automatically expecting it this Tuesday. Woops. :x

I'm most excited to play through the single player campaign and the zombies with my brothers. There's nothing like a good multiplayer campaign to celebrate being brothers.

Gunsmith is more than just camos, but yes good value.

No hype here. Going to pass on a CoD for the first time ever. Year after year no one seems to have gotten the net code right. MW2 was the last CoD with the best netcode. Didn't like the demo. However, if I am bored to death after FO and TR then I might pick this one up bargain.

I'll probably end up buying a PS4 this holiday season, and I'm feeling that CoD itch again.

Call of Duty hasn't really interested me since MW2, which was the last one I bought. I'm not really that interested in the futuristic ones.

My thoughts exactly.

Should I get back into this series? The last game in this series I picked up was World at War on the PS3.
How does it compare to CS:GO?

Something about Treyarch Cods always feel really good. Better than the other ones to me. Definitely looking forward to it.

New to COD, does this mean you can be offline, you select any map in a multiplayer mode, and can just play entirely against bots? No network connection needed? Not a single other player - just you and bots?

Yes.

Back in the days of Black Ops 1, my friends came up with a new kind of survival mode. They'd pick a map (usually Nuketown), set the teams up so that it was them two against a full team of AI bots on the highest difficulty, and then they'd hunker down somewhere and try to survive. The hardest difficulty bots cheat like mad (or at least they did in Black Ops 1). They'll step into a room and turn straight to you, even if you're out of their field of vision. It was all reaction based. They had lots of fun though.
