Hyper Light Drifter |OT| We On A HyperLight Beam

Man, i think the difficulty is really good, actually. Especially when you get the hang of dodging and buying some sword/dash skills.

Sometimes it's actually easy.

Once I was able to upgrade one or two things I found the game to lose any real challenge. I started in the west which was very difficult, but all of the other areas were a cakewalk and the bosses went down in two or three tries.

I think that NG+ is definitely for me. I can name plenty of games that I've dropped the difficulty down for without any shame, but I could use a bit more of a challenge here.

Finished North and East now. Just started on West and it's so beautiful there. I'm finding difficulty to be a bit mixed. Every encounter is possible, of course but the tools each player has varies a lot so difficulty isn't really fine tuned. One player might meet the encounter with full health and useful upgrades while another is trying to beat it with no upgrades and one health. That's a huge difference. Still it's always possible to move forward, take is slow and you'll always get through.

Has anyone been able to get this working on a Surface Pro 3 with Windows 10?

The Intel display driver craps out when the game is launching and then it crashes every time.

Welp. Beat it, game crashed during the final cutscenes. A+.

It's pretty good, but I highly doubt I'm going to hug every wall in the game to find out where all the hidden junk is.

Biggest complaint is the map / secrets design. A few of them have tells, most are just "nah there's an opening here lol"

Is there a reason this isn't unlocking? Do I need to fill out the east, west, and south diamonds as well?

Also, I'd love people who've finished the game to rank the difficulty of the areas. Just to get an idea of how I want to tackle the rest of the game :D

There's more than four diamonds per area. You need to get the other 4 to finish the square. Most of them are through hidden paths through walls.

West is the only boss that's real dumb without upgrades.

Deep into the east region now. I've managed to get quite few upgrades to between colored gear and spending money on ability upgrades. The ability to send projectiles back with the sword, along with the dash ability that absorbs shots, are pretty excellent for this area considering the amount of projectiles on screen at times between the frogs and the snipers. Going from not having those abilities to buying them as I near the end of this section is a big difference.

It's the right difficulty for me cuz I suck at video games. I find myself cursing sometimes on a boss that won't go down, but eventually I overcome.

I couldn't beat North boss, so I had a couple beers, got my chain dash, and then went back and fucked that mothafucka the fuck up!

People strugling with the game I give you few tips:

If you are doing badly don't use medipacks and restart. Use them only when you are maxed and find a new one. They are plenty and this makes sure you have them maxed on bosses where they are needed the most.

But I think the most important thing is to learn use your gun. Remember that almost every slash that connects gives you more ammo. Weaken enemies by shooting them then finish them with 1 or 2 sword hits. Rince and repeat. ¨

Also if there are plenty of enemies try to isolate them and fight them 1-on-1. Makes things easier.

I loved the combat and only boss battle I had problems was the one on west though I feel it was mostly my fault being too impatient. After all every boss has a pattern that hardly changes between different tries so it's not that bad. Most of the bosses went down actually very easily.

Best game of 2016 so far. Really solid and I have hard time to come up with any cons. Yeah the map is pretty bad and the final boss could have been a bit more challenging but that's about it.

Anyone know why this door doesn't open? I activated the four whateverthefucks that I think it requires to unlock it.

I'm going absolutely insane trying to find the
8th piece
in North. It wasn't even in the
house with 12 keys in the village
which I was banking on for the sake of my sanity. :(

Man, finding those hidden power triangle things is going to really increase the time I spend on this game. Is there a trick to finding them? Do I have to wait until later before I can access them, or can I feasibly get them right from the start?

What do you need to do in the larger square room next to the vendor that has the counter on the bottom of the screen? If you do 101 of something you unlock a door and then another after 6-800. Was watching the Giant Bomb quick look and they showed him dashing around but I dont think it was just the regular dash, anyone know?

So, is there some sort of a story summary somewhere? I played about two hours last night, and I don't really want to have a full summary... but it would be nice to sort of know what the hell is going on. Didn't really make much sense of the opening cut scenes outside of them looking cool and that the Drifter is hurt and got saved by some dude?

Is there any way to regain health after dying a couple of times? I have to clear a room full of enemies with one bit of health and most of the time I just find myself dying to the fact that the screen is so busy that I miss a tiny enemy or projectile which isn't much fun to be honest.

I believe you'd have to go to another area (if you're north, go west, etc.) and collect medkits then head back to where you are (enemies and medkits will reset as well). Kind of a pain, but that's how it goes.

The exit is blocked so that's a no-go. Looks like I'm just gonna have to git gut and beat the area with one health.

I'm really disappointed right now.
Finally found all those
monoliths
and expected something cool to happen. Maybe some lore stuff, I dunno
Instead it was just another
color swap
.
Really not worth the effort, kinda sours me a bit on the game tbh.

You'll either have to backtrack or bash your head against the wall. That's just the way this game is.

I know this has probably been asked already a bunch, but anyone know when this is coming to PS4? I know it's 2016, just not sure if they have an actual date yet.

I hope you realise that each different coloured outfit/sword/helper have different abilities, they're not just colour swaps. You can even mix the colours up to have different abilities.

As for the monoliths, the game has its own language which is possible to decipher if you wanted to learn more about the game and it's lore.

I know that but it's not the reward I was hoping for.
And yes I know, but I don't have the time to that. I didn't care when Fez did it and I don't care now.

Agreed on difficulty. The map could be way more clear though.

The map is pretty clear, when you understand it. It shows the layout of the room you are. The red dots represents the elevators that goes underground and shows where you will emerge.

It's also easy to know if the room does have a piece of monolith or not after you find the purple dog npc on the map and he marks 4 of them on the map for you. You know the room you are in does have one and maybe you should look a bit more for it.

Really digging this so far, the art is top notch.

I have two questions:
-Why does this run in a weird (locked?) resolution?
-Why does it look stuttery like it's running at 30fps? A GTX 970 should be chewing through this, it's a shame that art like this is wasted on a 60hz 4K display :(

Download the beta patch and run in borderless windowed mode. Fixes the stutter.

I don't know about resolution, but the game is locked at 30 FPS.

Well, it is running at 30 FPS. But some people report additional stuttering that is fixed by going to borderless windowed mode.

I've come to the conclusion after playing the game for awhile, the best part was the non
playable intro.

I just can't get into this after playing for a good period. I can't quite put my finger on it. Combat is ok, controls are solid, the music is great.

Something just feels "off"

Anyone else feels this way?

The minibosses are harder the the actual bosses lol. How do I deal with
Grim Reaper?

edit: gotem. the timing inbetween his attacks and opening to strike is pretty tight. I especially like how when he catches his weapon it makes him recoil so it makes it even harder to hit him

Kotaku posted their review of the game.

http://kotaku.com/hyper-light-drifter-the-kotaku-review-1769432532

Kind of surprised to see reviewers have so much difficulty with the game. I wouldn't put this as being more difficult than Bloodborne. (Which is honestly the From Software game I think HLD feels more like, over Dark Souls) Still, it's all pattern recognition in the end, which is stuff even Zelda games had you learn to defeat the bosses.

Shame to see it get knocked for that difficulty too because while I personally don't feel its THAT difficult, it's also such a great game that I want more people to experience it. Feels like it's really under the radar.

Borderline infuriating to see several reviewers knock the games score because of the 'difficulty'.

I want more games like this and less A for awesome.

It's interesting that some people are becoming frustrated with the game because of the difficulty. I did get upset at the boss to the west but had to calm down because I was becoming too hasty with my moves instead of reading the situation and adjusting ever so slightly to give me an edge. Most of the common mob encounters I try to read the situation, if there are multiple weak mobs swarming, use the
shotgun
or swipe with your sword. Most of my mistakes are because I was to hasty and didn't take the time to pay attention. Letting the frustration take hold, letting your rage get the better of your being, is something that makes your skill that much more messy.

The hardest the game has been for me was the north boss, with no upgrades beating him was a challenge and took me maybe 2 hours. Everything since then has been a cakewalk with the
chain dash, reflect and health upgrades
. Fighting the west boss was actually fun and enjoyable.

So I've racked-up 15 hours of gameplay over the past few days, found all the triangle pieces in every area, the vast majority of the monoliths, have every gun, almost all the upgrades and have started new game+

This game is fucking awesome.

I went into it with virtually no prior knowledge at all and was immediately grabbed by the art direction. The Titans looks incredible in the opening cutscene (very Evangelion) and the game as a whole is gorgeous

The music sets a somber, mysterious tone and compliments the post-apocalyptic scenery very well. I don't think many people could disagree that the game goes for a very specific atmosphere and nails it.

As far as the story is concerned, I like that you're given very little information initially and are essentially left to piece the story together yourself through observations of the world and tiny details provided by various NPC's you find scattered here and there. It's got a very Dark Souls-esque style of storytelling.

Speaking of Dark Souls, the gameplay itself is not dissimilar and is definitely the game's strongest point. The controls generally feel tight and you're forced to make sure that your every action is very deliberate. Encounters are consistently challenging and the enemy variety ensures each area feels fresh. The overall difficulty is perfect for your first playthrough. It's punishing, but fair. It forces you to learn the game's mechanics, utilize all your abilities, and think before you act. There's no reward for rushing in and blindly swinging your sword around.

I've just dipped my toe into new game+ and it feels even better.
Having a shortened life bar
forces you to seriously focus and plan your approach to each battle, but once you're dashing around a room, dodging, reflecting and attacking enemies along the way until you're the last man standing, you get an enormous sense of satisfaction.

Also, it's great seeing how people generally can't seem to agree on which area is the easiest to start in. I think that shows that the game is very well balanced, as different players are finding difficulty in different areas.

So yeah. Love the game. Glad I picked it up. Really hope there's more to come!

I'm getting that vibe as well. That first 10 minutes made me feel like the game was going to be great, but it falls short when the game just throws me into a map with no clear direction of where to go. I can't help but think it makes it quite bland and frustrating, especially if you backtrack but then realize you have to go back to where you left, fighting the same group of enemies again as if you never killed them.

For a difficulty standpoint I can understand this, so I should probably give it another try.

I kinda sympathize. I think it'd be upsetting to have a game paid for and unbeaten because it lacks a difficulty options or whatever else.

Probably all I'd want from an 'easy mode' is for the damage done to carry over. Repeating some of the enemy waves is exhausting and brutal.

Wow, just beat this and immediately started new game+, incredible game. Probably the first in years where I've wanted to keep playing after collecting everything. Combat was rough at first, but once you get the hang of it everything flows so well. I wish there was a boss rush mode or something though, some of those fights are really great.

Nobody has technically gotten '100%' yet, as no one has unlocked the Hoarder achievement.
I'm holding out hope that there's some bonus content hidden away somewhere, but I'm pretty sure that achievement is just bugged.
