I am in Germany, Recommend Beer

Lagers, Weizens, and Bocks. Not much else. If you want Beer go to Colorado, California, New England, or St. Louis. Germany, Belgium, etc. specialize in only a few styles. Nothing wrong with it, they are certainly good, just not anything special, rare, or unique.

Germany..well that's not that far from Austria where you can get REALLY awesome beer.

Honestly I've never been a big fan of german beer*. I mean yeah when you're used to that piss that americans call beer it's pretty good. But imho czech and austrian beer is a lot better.

Becks is probably the most disgusting beer I've ever tasted in my life.

EDIT: Weissbier is absolutely fantastic, but I think that's really not for most people.

my favourite! erdinger weissbier

One of my favourites, and actually a very accessible Weizen/Weissbier

You really should be asking your German bartender. They will probably give you a good run-down and if asked to make a recommendation will even probably take into consideration which keg is the freshest.

Of course, this kind of strategy requires talking to real people rather than posting on NeoGaf...

Uh, I believe you are misinformed. Yeah, Bud, Coors and Miller suck, but there are some AMAZING beers produced in the US these days.

That might very well be, It's just that I'll never forgive them for ruining the Budweiser name. And the stuff we get here is really awful (basically all the brands you named)

Also name a few, always love me some good beer.

It's not even a contest. The American Craft Beer industry has eclipsed everything else in quality by leagues. Ironically the Belgians are the king of Corporate beer nowadays

True, still love me some Chimay Red/White/Blue, Achouffe beers and Lindemann's Lambics though.

Just a few breweries I can think of are: Founder's, Surley, Sierra Nevada, Bell's, Southern Tier, Rogue, Dogfish Head, Sixpoint, Three Floyds and even Sam Adams makes some great beers.

It's the only beer I drink because it doesn't taste as bitter as the others.
Sadly it's hard to come by if you're not in upper Germany.

EDIT: Also German pornography is shit.

Oh absolutely. There are a number of stellar imports. Still no reason to let the masses perpetuate the misconception that Germany is the place to go to beer. Particularly irking because there are a number of American Brewers who trump them with better examples of their native styles

Andechser Dunkel or Doppelbock Dunkel. One of the best beers I've ever had in my life. If you're in Munich, they have a restaurant there as well. Very hard to find Andechs even in Germany, but so worth it.

Regional: Tannenzäpfle!

It's like Germany's Pabst Blue Ribbon - but it is actually good beer!

It's so popular even the NY Times writes about it!

Tannenzäpfle is a great choice.

Thanks to the previous occupants of the apartment I am staying at, I have already tried this beer as they left it in the fridge. It is very good.

my favourite! erdinger weissbier

This was also good.

Ayinger Celebrator. Best German beer I've ever had.

I will attempt to find and try this.

Don't know many of them (as in, tasted personally), but I heard Augustiner is one of the best . It's from Bavaria but Stuttgart is like next door so it shouldn't be hard to get.

The label is quite fun.

LAGERBIER HELL

And also this.

First Post nails it.

For Porn, i would say that any movie staring Gina Wild is story heavy and not degrading in any way.
Or just buy some "GGG" movies - i mean degrading is such a broad term.

Why are people recommending Becks and Heineken? wtf people he was asking for beer.

German porn? Go into the next sexshop and ask for stuff with Gina Wild.

I shall try this tomorrow. And to the fellow saying German porn is shit, I am not concerned, as it is more for the hilarity value than actually looking for good pornography.

Stuttgart, you say?

Try Wulle. Tastes like water, but it's a lot of fun.

Augustiner is one of my favorites, so I'll second that recommendation.

Also, why Stuttgart? I live here, and I can see no reason to visit this city :-D
Haha, I did not choose the location. I'm here for a research project as part of my undergraduate thesis. It is a very nice city, but yes, it is not a very touristy place.

Thank you all for the recommendations!

Well, in Germany there is the Reinheitsgebot, so the producer aren't allowed to add piss to the beer

Yep, it's the good kind of German Purity Law.

But the reason why Bud, Miller, Coors etc. taste so yucky is that they use adjunct grains like corn and rice instead of barley or wheat to save money. AFAIK doing that is against the law in Germany. Which is why there are some bland German beers (like Beck's), but none are outright terrible.

True, still love me some Chimay Red/White/Blue, Achouffe beers and Lindemann's Lambics though.

Thanks dude!

Side question: Girlfriend wants me to bring back/get German pornography. Looking for something with german actors that isn't really degrading to women. One with a story would be good. Recommend. Don't necessarily have to buy it while in Germany.
Look for Mia Magma

My favorite beer:

A really good Hefeweizen you should be able to find in stores.

Yes, two of my favs when I went, the schiender weiss hopfen weiss is also awesome, very strong and hoppy, strong flavours and alcohol content though.

Erdinger you can get from just about anywhere in the world imported so branch out and try something different like this...

It's called "Bacon Beer" for good reason, but contains no bacon, the flavour is achieved by smoked malted barley

One more vote for Erdinger. Make sure to get a couple of those fancy glasses as well. ( but yeah, you should be able to get that outside of Germany as well )

Rauchbier was one of the most confusing taste experiences I've ever had. Personally, I thought it was terrible, but to each their own.

I don't think you understand what I meant...

Just because two regions make good beer doesn't make them equals. The American Craft Beer industry plays second fiddle in reputation to Germany, despite the fact that they produce better beer than them (in the German specific styles as well). Just because you don't care about the beer industry doesn't mean others don't. Your dismissal of the importance of designating the difference in quality between the regions is offensive in its ignorance of the degree of difference to anyone with a vested interest in the American Craft Beer Industry.

Well, I don't think it's fair to compare American craft beers to German mass brewed beer. Just look at the output. That's like me saying "My local mom and pop business makes a better burger than Wendy's" and proclaim that we have a better burger culture over here based on that.

If you compare the prevalent brands of beer, Germany wins hands down.

The issue being that people only eat Wendys and are told how much better the German Wendys are. Then when they go to Gemany they ask for and receive Wendys recommendations. And then someone has to bitch that good Wendys come from everywhere and any objectors have their head up their asses.

Who said anything about only comparing the prevalent brands, Germany's mom and pop places are unremarkable as well

Agreed. I enjoy a smoked porter from time to time, but the Rauchbier I've had has been over-the-top.

Define "prevalent". I can go into the alcohol section at the non-specialty supermarket I shop at and there are easily over 100 different American craft beers for sale.

As long as it is incredibly easy to buy great beer, why should I care whether Country A's shittiest macrobrew is better than Country B's shittiest macrobrew?

Wait, you thought I was talking about people recommending German beer here? Are you reading any of my posts in this thread?

Hint: I am agreeing with you. Chill out.
