The leap in quality when it comes to writing, dialogue choices, character depth, and narrative structure is staggering when compared to Veilguard

In this game, the variety of dialogue options is incredible—I can be diplomatic, tell someone to piss off, or outright kill them if I choose so. It feels genuinely exciting and refreshing. The music also stands out so much; it has soul and complements really well the game’s serious tone. There’s none of that cringe marvel dialogue or bizarre antics from recent modern games

Visually, while the game shows its age, a few well chosen mods make the game looks quite good actually and the strong art direction still holds up remarkably well in my opinion although a remaster like the legendary edition would be awesome honestly, specially because the game on pc has no support for controllers

It’s so disheartening to see how far BioWare has fallen. They’ve become a shadow of the creative powerhouse they once were.

That's the old bigoted type of fantasy.
In the modern day Fantasy for modern audiences that Bioware adheres to now, you get a different and even more exciting set of choices.
You can be an inoffensive good guy OR you can be an inoffensive good guy that's a bit sarcastic at times OR if you are feeling really naughty you can be an inoffensive good guy that's a bit snarky.

DA:O is actually the only good entry in this series. DA2 is already comically bad - both in terms of writing and game design. I remember pirating it and still being furious over how badly they fucked it up, I don't think I bothered to finish it.

Hated Bioware ever since. So it's really bizarre to me how people genuinely still expected anything from this company within the last 10-15 years lmao

After this, play Baldurs Gate 2.

To be amazed it hasn’t been topped in 20+ yrs.
Good game, need to get around to playing it all the way through at some point. I fucking hate the RTWP system though and the 2nd edition rules are ass backwards. I love the atmosphere of the game though.

On topic. DA:O is my favourite CRPG behind BG3. The writing and characters are just awesome.

You're right. This was an awesome, memorable game. Veilguard is an excrable, forgettable one by contrast.

It's too messy for me. RTWP was fine in DAO because I could see what was going on and plan properly. I probably need to spend more time setting the rules for each party member in BG2 since they all just flood the enemy and get fucked in 10 seconds.

I stand by 2nd edition rules being ass backwards though.
Its just a hard game. At beginning you don’t have much buffs/debuffs. So enemies hit hard.

It has classic RPG difficulty curve where its pretty unforgiving at the beginning. Once you build character, you actually start feeling very powerful. Each level up feels like a major difference in how your party performs.

I recently replayed DAO and DA2 as well. The writing is top notch and adult characters actually act like adults, what a refreshing marvelous concept!

The fucking "Marvelization" of most/all mainstream gaming has completely devastated the versimilitude of fiction. Every single MC in scifi/fantasy feels like a self aware modern day Hollywood actor.
It’s the fucking highschools that educate the people of tomorrow.

BG2 has pretty good AI governing command scripting that you should take advantage of.

Also, for mages, there are so many really cool options for triggers.

Edit: meant BG2 of course.

Dragon Age was special. Sad to see what Bioware has become.

I never played this and i've been thinking about starting it. Just have decide whether to play it on PC or Series X. I know PC is better, but this is the kind of game i normally like to play lounged out with a controller.

The existence of this topic makes me a sad person... It really needs a remaster, with improved graphics and I think there would be good sales, certainly better than DAV.
Just please don't make it in the DAV style and with the same color scheme, make it normal...

I played Origins back when it came out, and throughout the years. The difference in quality between Origins and Veilguard is quite shocking. Not sure if I've ever seen such a dramatic departure from a series roots, in so many different ways.

what mods are you using?

- Unofficial remaster, it makes the game looks quite good although dont expect miracles

- Shinny armors and weapons, gives a more realistic look to the characters

Qwinn's Ultimate DAO Fixpack fixes, it fixes many bugs

Dains fixes, it fixed bugs with combat

Hd eyebrows and stubble

Nathanael's 4K Resolution Mod to be able to play at 4k

FtG UI Mod - More Readable Fonts and UI to be able to play with readable subtitles otherwise they will be tiny

Skip the fade, people say this area is tedious so it skips part of it

Extra dog slot so the dog can follow you always as a party member

Oh and I recommend people to get the GOG version, it was patched recently and you will avoid crashes and bad performance

And a few more, I will update this post when I remember all

I agree man. Having this game with modern graphics would be insane but hey, mods at least can help making the experience more pleasant.

They would infuse their ideologies into the Remaster. We all know it. I'd rather they just leave it alone.
We already live in an era of only remakes and remasters, half of which could have been avoided.
But I won't refuse remasters of games that have really stood the test of time, and that can show how much the bar has fallen in modern projects. And yes, of course you can play it now, but most players will be scared off by its visuals, and most won't want to waste their time installing mods + even with them it looks not good in places...

P.S - I'm not particularly worried about them ruining the game with their ideologies - because if they do that in DAO, they will die as a company, they will definitely not be forgiven for that. And the consequences will be much worse than with DAV. =)

Sorry, but this is why I don't take seriously anyone who praises or even likes The Vailguard without acknowledging how trash it is.

I never knew who Mortismal Gaming was until Veilguard. Everyone was talking about how he's THE rpg reviewer, and how much they trust his opinion. Maybe he's normally pretty good, but this was my exposure to him, and it was about as bad of a first impression as you can get. Veilguard is barely an rpg, and for him to give it such a glowing review, and to rate it higher than Origins, tells me all I need to know.

Make Dragon Age Great Again. To me, Origins is the only good game. Dragon Age 2 was serviceable. I did not like Inquisition. Veilguard looks so bad it ruins the whole series.

Yeah I think he's been compromised. I unsubbed from him after that.

Bioware is just not the same company (literally) as it was when it made DAO.

This is the corpse of Bioware being worn by those who were not apart of its previous greatness.

Once you realize that, the disappointment in their last few games becomes much easier to deal with.

This game is old BioWare. Which is very good. The dialogues and choices are good and have certain impact.

When I see reviewers praising Veilguard I assume they never played DA:O or any classic BioWare game. Because what they produce nowadays really isn't good.

Not really, it still crashes a lot on PC, almost to the point of unplayability after a certain point if you dont use the 4GB Vram patch that is mentioned on pcgamingwiki. With that patch yes it works well.

What is great about Dragon Age Origins is that you can be such a bastard that practically no one shows up at your ceremony at the end.

I think you can alienate or kill everyone in your party.
