I am seriously pondering the possibility of changing my first name

Come on man. You wanna change your name because friggin' Nintendo screwed it up in your subscription? Lighten up. Olivier's a great name. (Maybe that's why you started this thread, i.e. to have forum members compliment you on your great first name?)

I'm a French Canadian man and my first name has been butchered on many, many occasions. My name is Maxime, but over the years, it has appeared as Maxie, Maxim and Mrs. or Ms. Maxine several times on the cover of magazines. I don't care, although I find it pretty dumb and somewhat unprofessional on the part of the people responsible for this mess.

Uh, are you sure you did not read a little too fast? ;)

Not at all, I did not believed it was possible for it to be liken, now I am really mixed up and I suppose I will keep it for now. I am happy but the problem is I think people say it and are inconsequent, I think some even butchered my name via PM and stuff. I'd need a more tangible proof. ;)

Well please understand. Maxime is not an english first name, but Olivier (Oliver) is, and it's so much alike that it gets mixed up all the time, and if I go to live in an english society (which I plan to do most probably), people will call me Oliver anyway, so I guess it would maybe just be better when I go there to make it changed fully to Oliver on papers to avoid the many issue it causes me, but then again I guess I'm just a rare breed.

Maybe I will wait to play against american and english canadians on XBox Live or PS2 games with voice to see how I am perceived, that is for my name, I have got no french accent anymore, save for when I decide to show it. ;)

it's going to come out of you and it's going to taste so good
Heh, my name's Dmitri. It gets misspelled by EVERYONE. Even when I'm spelling it out to them, letter by letter, they just can't seem to make the mental leap that, indeed, M is immediately following D without a vowel. Every piece of mail I have has a different horrific spelling.

I don't sweat it that people mangle it. Having a strange name is useful in little ways. People who have only met me once at a party rarely forget my name because it's so unusual. I can't say I am able to return the favor if their name is really common like John or something. Having an unusual name is like having a brand name that stands out amongst the rest of them.

You can instantly tell if a call is from a telemarketer or someone else who doesn't really know you by how they mispronounce your name. Once they screw it up you can just hang up on them and know that they don't actually know you. Occasionally, I intentionally slightly misspell my name on some forms to track if my information is being resold by that company. Findings: Microsoft sells your name to everyone :D.

I once knew a guy named Olivier who moved here from France. He just made a point to correct people when they got it wrong and it wasn't a problem.

My name is Kevin Jones... my middle name is just as common... took me 4 hours to set up a email account... because I wanted something that didn't have a bunch of fucking numbers in it... believe me it is not as great as it seems to have a common name.

And just because non-french speaking people pronouce your name the "English" way doesn't mean you need to change it... I live in Japan and Japanese people can't say my name... there is no V sound in Japanese... so they say Kebin... When you speak to people from different backgrounds you have to just deal with it!

Why the heck are you blaming Trudeau for people mistaking Olivier for Oliver? I mean dude, what?

I'm getting the image of you stumbling out of bed in the morning, hitting your foot against your bedside table and going "Ow my toe.... EVEN IN THE MORNINGS YOU MAKE MY LIFE HORRIBLE, FUCK YOU TRUDEAU!"

And get yourself mang, I know a dude whose first name is OSAMA. And another whose last nume is Butt. Yeah that's right. Butt.

Edit: Hell I've given up on people pronouncing MY OWN first name correctly. I don't blame dead politicians for it though.

Olivier is a cool name, and on the bright side, you don't have it nearly as bad as I do (my name is "Ashwin"). Ever since I started school, people have been mispronouncing my name (it should sound more like "Usher" than "Ashley"), but at this point I just go with whatever. :)

"Wait, you changed it to 'Latrine'?"
"Yeah, used to be 'Shithouse'."

"That's a good change, that's a GOOD change..."

This post just made me go find my birth papers and I found out that I do have a middle name, I did not even knew it! According to the paper, it's Joseph. Sure it's easier to get, but it sounds like I'm an old prick and not a 23 years old boy! That makes me like OlivIer even more all of a sudden! :)

You're kidding? You didn't know your middle name?

What else did your parents not tell you?

Next time you find a girlfriend, make sure she's not your sister! :)
