I called in a party to the RA, police showed up

2:00am and I couldn't sleep cause the noise next door. Live on a dorm mostly filled with 1st/2nd year engineering students.

RA was awake, told him that people were being disturbing next thing I know 4 RAs show up, one calls the police, que mad dash of like 4 guys pouring whiskey and shit down the shared bathroom.

I didn't fk these guys out of an education did I. The last thing these guys needs is the lack of one.

Happened about 1hr ago and police and RAs left but I'm pretty sure they know it was me who called it in. I'm just really confused and kind of anxious because I don't know what's going to happen to them or me.

I think you're going to get a lot of people in here telling you what you should have done, which is probably not a lot of help. Snitches, hurr hurr and the like.

But if you called the RA, I wonder if they called the cops? I'm willing to bet that the RA tried to reason with them.

Additionally.... YOU didn't buy the alcohol, make them drink, etc. they broke rules, it's on them.

Meh, college is about education, not parties... Since they had alcohol on campus they should have known the risks going in. If your going to do that kinda stuff then at least do it off campus : P

At the end of the day college is about education. Not some stupid "movie fantasy" about non-stop parties and acting like a moron.

You did the right thing. Those jerks knew the rules, and they chose to break them.

You did the right thing; the RAs just weren't smooth on protocol. If the accused give you any trouble, them them you had nothing to do with it (which in all technically it is true), but if they harass you you will take action. Also, if you don't feel safe, apply for a dorm change.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. I love to party as much as the next guy but the people next to you probably don't feel the same way.

You did nothing wrong. If anyone ruins these kids' educations, then it's them, not you.

I could understand if it was a weekday, but a weekend? In a dorm? Pretty weak, dude.

Not when you're trying to get some sleep at an hour where the rule usually is be quiet.

And c'mon, it's flat-out disrespectful to your neighbors, especially at a college, to be that loud and obnoxious at that hour.

depends on your school's policies.

when I was in school kids who got caught drinking in the dorms pretty much got a slap on the wrist, but since cops showed up, who knows what could happen. Were they campus police or actual police?

Anyways I doubt you screwed them out of an education, they might get kicked out of the dorms at worst, but again, it depends on your school's policies.

What difference does it make? He pays to live in an education-friendly environment and he is entitled to be able to sleep within comfortable, normal means on every night of the week.

It sounds like you did the right thing.

I don't think it would be wrong to assume they were disturbing others as well.

I've seen so many threads on GAF about neighbours disturbing the topic creators during the time that people are trying to sleep so it's hard to see how someone here could get on your case about this.

You did what you did.

Own up to it now, because a lot of the future decisions you don't own up to will bite you in the ass when you least expect it.

Such is the way of the adult, or so I've been told.

(It's like 3am, I'm probably rambling myself to sleep anyway. Go to bed, OP.)

Possibly a dick move, but I doubt the RA immediately called the police. So that's not your fault for bringing it that far. So I wouldn't feel bad at all.

I'm not an NPC. And neither are we.
If the college cops are cool, they will just tell everybody to go home. Usually what happens round here unless people get belligerent, at which point it's their fault.

What did you expect? You reported underage drinking.

IDK, I've been caught a lot doing this. One time the cops and medics woke me from a blackout in the college stadium after I blacked out from tailgating at a game. I was in a puddle of my own vomit, after the medics said I was good to go the cops straight up said. "We are letting you go, but if you get arrested after you walk out of this bathroom, it's on you". I thanked them and GTFO'd.

They were the ones drinking not you. And you weren't the one who called the police anyways. Just go to sleep and get off of GAF :p

It obviously varies from school to school, but I doubt they're going to be expelled or even harshly penalized for a first offense. Usually, it's just a slap on the wrist, a mandatory course on "responsible drinking", and they might not even tell their parents.

Assuming you're also in the last weekend before finals, I'd say your actions were justified. Most weekends, respecting the hall means allowing people to have fun & let off steam. But occasionally, respect does mean ensuring everyone in the hall gets a night of sleep.

Well, weekdays you have class and homework. Weekend, you might just have homework. Pretty big difference. You'd also have to be pretty naive to think that a college dorm will be quiet on the weekend, or actually expect it to be. Sounds like a good way to get socially ostracized from the dorm if its found out that he was the one who ratted out on the party.

Bingo, I think this can be a big deal in some colleges. I had at least one RA who was really strict about this and basically warned us all if he caught us, he would turn us in.

I think I only really had to get an RA once -- right after I moved into a new dorm, a drunk guy from the hall (also possibly under 21) stumbled in at like 2 a.m., climbed on my bed, and passed out.

Thankfully I hadn't even put sheets on it yet, but the RA, possibly the guy's roommate, and I couldn't get the guy to even do anything but maybe moan and lie there, so apparently the RA ended up calling the campus security or whoever, and the guy had to go through some sort of program because of it. I don't think anyone ever gave me grief about it, even the guy -- was just a crazy thing to see someone walk in and pass out on your bed drunk and unresponsive.

*edit* Also yeah, if people try to ostracize you or give you crap, just apply for a dorm change ASAP. Explain the situation to the people in charge of housing if needed, shouldn't be a big deal.

I can't imagine being a tattle tale as an adult. You should of joined in on the party, college isn't just about education, not even 100 years ago. Its about becoming adult via education, socializing, and getting with the opposite sex.

I don't think it's fair to jump to assumptions on OP's situation. We don't know if he has something important going on tomorrow (and thus needed to sleep), if the people he reported were repeat offenders, or other factors. As I stated earlier, it's likely his school is in the middle of finals ATM.

i've heard all i needed to hear

the "last thing these guys need is a lack of education" was just the judgmental icing on the cake

Finals are usually in May. And if his college is on Spring Break... Thats just low

As an adult, I can't imagine not putting an end to some bullshit noise at 2 in the fucking morning. I don't care what day it is. I don't mind people having fun, but when it's 2 in the morning and your keeping the dorm awake and you're underage drinking your dumb ass deserves to get caught. (Saying this as someone who has gotten caught in that situation).

Don't worry OP you do them a favor, maybe they'll reign it in a little bit and not fuck up there chance of actually learning something.

There's nothing wrong with having some fun (even if you're under 21), but have some respect for those around you... especially when it's a shared living condition.

I guess they're supposed to be given a free pass because it's a dorm or whatever, but in an apartment building, no mercy. If it's past midnight and your noise is keeping me up I'll call the police and if the gods are smiling on me that night you'll get tasered in the process. Fuck you and your noise.

Very lame of you. There's a lot of things you could've done before whining to the RA about it.

Besides it's the weekend.

OP was trying to sleep, the people at the party were being inconsiderate and being too loud. It doesn't matter if it was a party or a study group, he called it in, and did the right thing. Calling the police was not OP's fault and he had no idea that would be done.

Don't be a moron. Most apartment buildings have noise policies and will often require a police report before taking any action against a tenant. If you want to throw parties until 4am then take it to a club or go rent a house.

I have a neighbor who moved in right across form me last August. Turned out to be a raging asshole when it comes to noise. Parties with loud music and thumping bass and talking/yelling out in the hallway, any night of the week. Took a couple visits from the police to shut him the fuck up and he's been behaving ever since.

What's this mess. You can have fun all day long, but as soon as you bother someone else they are well within their rights to make a complaint. If they were any type of responsible, then they wouldn't have been being loud.

Bububuh I pay rent and should be able to be obnoxious and loud because WAAAAAAAH.

I'd love to hear those bullshit reasons.

If four RA's and the police showed up, it's cause your neighbors are morons. Most RA's receiving a noise complaint will just knock on the door and say "Dude's it's late, mind keeping it down." For extra people to come in, they either got mouthy with the RA, didn't hide their booze, or were underage drinking with an open door. Whatever happens to them is on them, not you.

I would have called he cops myself. If only some places where you can drink, be loud and socialize would exist. We could call them, I don't know, bars, maybe?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say if people are drinking in a 1st & 2nd year's dorm hall, the campus bar is not a viable option.
