I'm salivating right now. I'm heading to my local Indian joint as soon as I get off work.

I have a place by my house that serves indian food but I was always very skeptical about eating it. Is it really that good?

What?

I tell you, the mix of warm, soft bread and sinus-clearing spices is godly. And set yourself up with a mango lassi as well.

depends if you're used to spicy food or not. if not, it'll be an aqcuired taste. if you are used to spicy food, then you'll love it.
depends on the place as well, of course.

I don't enjoy Indian food, simply because I don't like spicy food. But I still eat it every now and then because my family happens to love Indian food. :S

Totally depends on the restaurant. This could be coincidence, but I have noticed that there is a direct relationship to the quality of Indian/Paki/Bengali food to how dirty the floor is.

Not all Indian food is spicy, by the way--if you don't like spicy food you can always go for something mellow like chicken korma. That's sort of a gateway drug, though.

Not at the restaurant my family goes to. See they have this one restaurant and their stuck with it. So when its to for some Indian food then thats the place were going to. What sucks is that the owner of the restaurant is always there and its buffet so if you go there he's gonna run after you while your choosing what you want and starts throwing food on your plate. Even if you don't want his help, he'll pop right infront of you grab a spoon and start pouring stuff on your plate.

I do thank my parents for getting me used to spicy stuff at a young age. I notice that I can eat stuff some of my friends have trouble with and I don't see the big deal. IT MAKES ME FEEL LIKE A REAL MAN

It's not all spicy. I love the butter chicken and that mashed eggplant (Baigan Ka Bharta)

There's an excellent Indian restaurant directly across the street from me, which is incredibly dangerous on the old budget. Nothing quite like pulling into the driveway, getting out of the car, and having to struggle to resist the urge to bolt across the street and just dive right in.

Chicken makhani is my drug of choice, though I occasionally go for a saag or korma dish of one sort of another. (For someone who doesn't generally care for spinach, I can tear up some saag paneer.) Add in loads of garlic nan, or perhaps some poori, and you're set.

Damn. Guess what I'm now jonsing for?

heh, interestingly enough my mom makes better food than most restaurants i've been to. most my non-desi friends just flock to my house during the holidays for the food.

I'm glad Grandpa porked a Chinese Muslim
There are some really good Indian buffets near my hometown. At first I thought it might not be so great, due to the non-eating of cows and pork, etc. However, there was some delicious chicken and lamb dishes that more than made up for it.

I'm not sure if the restaurant was going to do this regularly, or if it was part of its grand opening celebration, but there was a guy who made these things that were sort of like crepes with potatoes and stuff inside and folded up fresh to order.

Depends on the quality of place, type of style etc. and of course what style you like! There are many variations of the same dishes.

The ones you showed i wouldnt even picture them like that. Just shows you how different they can be. Naans in the UK tend to be round, the biryani is more mixed, tikka massala is actuallya UK dish not indian or whatever.

I prefer the veg variety :D

Samosa's or the higher quality pastry rock in good places.

Veg isn't bad but, my god, chicken pakora after a night of heavy drinking = orgasmic.

Why is it that all Indians are amazing gourmet fucking chefs? One of my best friends is Indian and her Mother is Godly at cooking. :O

Such a good myriad of spicing..

Yes! This thread rules.

Butter Chicken Masala = Delicious
Garlic Butter Nan = Hot
Korma, Vindaloo, Roganjosh dishes = Sex

nah not true. my mother spoiled me, i cant usually go anywhere else and enjoy eating indian food, it just doesnt taste as good. some are better cooks than others. it's a tradinional way of teaching though, i know my grandma certainly taught my mom how to cook and so on.
now mind you, most of the food that's being mentioned here is mughal food, the food of the islamic rulers. most your biriyani's, kormas, or other meat curries are all mughal food, along with kebabs, naans and other baked breads.
the veggie dishes are mostly indigenous indian food, such as dosa, saag, mixed veggie curries etc. and the thin breads that are cooked on pans etc.
samosas, pakoras and other deep oil fried stuff is a bengali thing. they have just about mastered the art of deep fried snacks.
of course now its all mixed up and you can go anywhere and get "indian" food. but the origins of the food are pretty diverse.

Eh, I eat this stuff practically every day. Though you know there are downsides. My Mother has to keep all the doors and windows wide open while cooking because otherwise the smell settles into everything. Wide Open. WINTER. No fun.

The amount of onions we fry to make a week of food is crazy.

nitewulf: It's become more of a North Indian/South Indian thing now from what I've seen. Veggie heavy dosa stuff = South, Meat Heavy kormas = North.

Of course you get daal everywhere.

Another vote for Southern Indian food and the even broader category of Southeast Asian. There is never a bad place to add coconut milk.

:lol From my experience every Indian mother has a few dishes they do amazingly and the rest are just average to blah.
