I find Pop-GAF utterly baffling (RANT)

I completely agree.

God, I don't even post in/read the Pop thread anymore but this needs to be the banner for OT4. That is literally the best angrypost anyone's ever made about it. Fucking fantastic.

Koodo's gif just proves that what was said had validity to it, otherwise y'all wouldn't be trying to insult Htown so desperately.

Somebody even responded with "Die Bitch," which would totally fly in other threads.
(Just so you know before you delve much deeper into this rabbit hole, this conversation you have begun to pursue is going to be an exercise in futility.)

I really can't think of threads that were ruined by Pop-GAF that were not explicitly or implicitly Pop-GAF threads, though.
Good to know you're impartial and reasonable.

I don't recall making a point about threads being ruined, but here's a classic example:

You could at least try a little harder to cover up your bias.

Umm, look at the responses in that thread before POPGAF even arrived. That thread was a mess before it was even started and the responses were no different.

The only difference between POPGAF and General GAF is the lack of GIFs.

At least the GIFs made things funny.

What? Did I link to a different thread or something?

It was a discussion of the spectacle that morphed into a fun photoshop thread until a throwaway comment about Britney Spears turned the thread into crap.
Bieber is POP. If you don't expect POP-gaf to roll up on that thread, I don't know what to tell you.
It was fine for about 450 posts, until the thread was spammed with Britney pictures and gifs for a dumb ass reason. Even worse is that they blatantly advertised that they were taking over the thread:
POP-GAF has now TAKEN OVER this thread.

We're all up in this bi*ch and we ain't stoping now.

It wasn't a mess until popgaf arrived, and that is an absolute fact. They ruined the thread, and even boasted about it as they did so.

Meh, the Photoshops had run the course after Sunni hit it out of the park. I always find it amusing myself when POP-gaf rolls up on a thread as long as it's pop related. I don't really care for the Baboon comment they like to throw around, but I deal with it.

Nice attempt at brushing it all under the rug, but a lot of people weren't amused.

I could quote dozens and dozens and dozens of posters frustrated with popgaf for ruining/derailing the thread.

And of course, there was this:
Okay, I got a complaint about the gif spamming derail. Stop it. If you want to do it in your community thread, that's fine. When you're making it a problem for people who are reading and posting on NeoGAF, it is not okay. Please refrain from such things and get along. Thanks.
refrain from what exactly?
many popgaf denizens operate with the same trolling posting template:

overaggressive and weird, with a reliance on gifs over text, and (this is new to me) a false sense of persecution despite the clear favoritism that keeps them from getting checked like they should have been a long time ago.

In the community thread, have fun with 100MBs of gifs per page.
In the rest of GAF, kill that shit.

It has annoyed a sizable portion of the userbase, and with good reason.

They posted for one page, and maybe 6 posts then the rest of the thread is people bitching about it. Hell it even got back on track for awhile after they did. If they came into a non pop thread and shit it up you might have a case, but right now your grasping at straws.

but do pop threads automatically mean Pop-gaf has free reign?

What's really funny is how indie listeners are apparently the ones circle jerking each other.

If anything, the entirety of society circle jerks itself over popular music and popular culture, regardless of the level of quality. This is probably why pop is a bit sickening at times and why, if anything, it's extremely refreshing to be a more thoughtful listener and to venture out beyond the typical radio-friendly commercial material.

Boom finally someone gets it. People who live in society today CAN'T ignore pop music. Just like we can't ignore billboards about McDonalds etc... advertising gives Pop music a voice, therefore it does not need to be treated as if its being oppressed... same way people saying there is a War on Christmas. Basically all I am saying is listen to what you like, but Pop-GAF appreciate how lucky you fuckers are in loving a style of music that is acceptable while some of us have to hide in our bedrooms to listen to what we love because people who only listen to the mainstream find our unique tastes TOO WEIRD. We sit through your favorite stuff more than you sit through ours. And I like pop styled music like the Beatles and a range of it, so its not like pop music is bad, but just like how hollywood movies today are formulaic and remakes, Pop music is going through the same problems. There are only so many times you can rehash innovative musical developments (btw most of the time these innovations stem from black musicians) for $$$$$$. Everyone loves what they love I know, don't need to remind me. But be aware of much music you aren't checking out simply because it doesn't mold to your comfort zone. I'm not gonna pretend I am some kind of musical-indiana jones or some shit, that finds all the best shit, cause that is insane. But I do spend a lot of time searching/listening to music that I would have never heard if it wasn't for giving new things a try/diggin around on last.fm/internets.

You gotta be listening to some fucked up shit that you gotta hide in your room with it.

I listen to hip hop mostly in my car, with my sound system on blast, and all the windows down. Fuck your taste, if you nearby you hearing what im hearing.

Here's my last.fm http://www.last.fm/user/analoguerevolvr

And I dont have to hide in my room, but I definitely come across people more inclined to immediately disapprove of something when they mainly listen to the mainstream stuff. People who go their own unique musical routes and find stuff have more respect for other peoples tastes because they know what thats like. I rarely if ever tell someone I dislike what they are listening to or they should listen to this instead. If they ask me I will be honest, but I can handle listening to Pop music.

Are their any tensions between K-pop GAF and Pop GAF?

There's no tension between K-POP GAF and POP-GAF anymore.

I didn't even know we were fighting? I blame phono.

BTW whoever asked when is the last time Hip-hop has had a number 1 hot single. We are getting there, the song is called Gangnam Style by the rapper Psy.
I think Kpop-gaf will claim Psy.

Someone get Kpop gaf in here

okay.gif

Not to be an elitist jerk... but you don't want kpop-gaf to get involved in a gif war. It would probably break gaf. And no ones browser would be able to load the page to be able to ban anyone, on either side.

Is this how gaf would end?

Well, that's the thing. I mentioned WAY earlier that people who listen primarily to Top 40 pop are inclined to think that other music is "challenging" when it really isn't. There just isn't much of a tolerance level in those listeners for music that isn't immediately gratifying and/or culturally-reinforced.

My own personal tastes basically come down to mere variations of rock and pop. Not all of what I listen to is extremely accessible but a large portion of it is. I don't need to "hide in my room" to listen to it; it's not like I listen only to death metal and hardcore gangster rap (in fact, I don't listen to either of these EVER). I'm proud of my tastes and I would play my music for other people all the time if I could. But as you conveyed, pop music is so ingrained that it's all that most people want (and are willing) to listen to.

Basically, pop enthusiasts have their tastes shared ALL THE TIME with other people because culture and the media spread the music around anyway (which is why I said that society circle jerks itself over this type of music). While I don't think my preferences are hard to share in terms of the music itself, they are hard to share in terms of other peoples' tolerances for anything that isn't immediately catchy, extremely familar, and re-inforced as "good" and "acceptable" by the mainstream.

I mean even the attitude on display here is about which pop songs are the best or which popular music gaf community has the most members. It's like arguing whats better, Pepsi or Coke... who gives a shit. Most the music I like I don't bother ranking against each other cause I listen to something if it strikes my mood/emotions, not whether or not its highly ranked on my daily top 10 track list. idk... grrrrrr :)

But the problem with that is the a portion of very nature of Hip hop is competition. Battling etc.
