I got a sneaking suspicion that the PSP's LCD is only 18 bit color......

First, keep in mind that it's an industry standard that no LCD for laptops are 24 bit in color. None. Zilch. Nada. They are all 18 bit color + dithering or alternate refresh averaging. Apparently it has to do with increased wiring/circuitry whatever. Whatever the reason, this is fact.

Second, looky what I've found today on engadget:

It's a new LG's MS Portable Media Center device with an 4.3" 480x272 LCD that displays 262,000 (18 bit) colors. Hmmmm......

I really don't think Sharp makes a true 24bit color LCD at this size. None of Sharp's own portable devices uses a 24 bit LCD. I can't find a Sharp press release about 24bit LCD either, just Sony's.

I think it's just another 18bit + dithering LCD.

Isn't the PSP screen 16.77 million colors, which generally is an indication of 24-bit?

Edit: If it was 18 bit plus dithering it would be 16.2 millions colors.

Screen: 4.3 inch, 16:9 widescreen TFT LCD
- 480 x 272 pixel (16.77 million colors)
- Max. 200 cd/m2 (with brightness control)

And yes, it IS full 24-bit colour unless they changed something between the Japanese launch and US launch. Or unless they totally shafted everyone and lied about the specs.

call me when you have evidence

How about you PSP owners helping me out on this.

Although my Photoshobucket account won't let me host a bmp this big, JPEG @ the least amount of compression should do so....

Take a look at this image on PSP and compare it to monitor on your desktop (a CRT or 24bit LCD only. No laptop LCDs and cheapo or fast pixel response LCDs). If you see any additional stepping or dithering, then we'll have the evidence.

compared it to my CRT and as far as i could see no additional stepping or dithering.

Unless I'm missing something, or your eyes are bonkers, I guess this means that it's a 24bit LCD.

I think Sony pretty much owned the world when it revealed that screen.

You mean Sharp did. Sony's paying Sharp premium for that screen, and then eating the cost to sell it to us.

No, Sony did... because it was them who decided to go with such a high quality screen. Sharp is just the edge of the sword that dealt the blow.

WOW. OK man. :lol

What, are you seriously suggesting it was SHARP who went to Sony and said "Here's a screen. I want you to build a handheld gaming device around it!"

No. Sony said "Fuck, we're making this handheld...we need a hella awesome screen. The most hella awesome screen that money can buy without forcing the handheld to ridiculous prices!"

And then they decided to spec and Sharp was the company who got the contract.

So, "Wow" is right, because Sony deserves just such a comment for being so batshit insane with the screen.

This would be all swell if any of the PSP games ran in 24 bit color. *place rolleyes here*

Oh yeah.... There is that one puzzle game. :lol

I suspected this thread was just a personal vendetta, but hey... you're so easily exposed, I didn't even have to try.

Dude, you know I've been pro PSP and anti DS all these months. WTF?

It was just a suspicion, not the Spanish inquisition!

And that rock was always thrown by me, although I'm always been a huge PSP fanboy and a DS hater.

I've always been a big Gizmondo fanboy and PSP/DS hater. I don't know why, but Gizmondo has always appealed to me in ways other handhelds simply haven't been able to! Built-in camera foh life.

REIROM? Is that you? :lol

...and you are sad that games on a portable are not pushng more color?

Quite the opposite.

I've always said 24 bit LCD on PSP was waste of money for gaming purposes. When I first thought PSP's screen was really 18 bit + dithering, I was going to commend Sony on a smart move.

Well there goes that idea. ;)

Shog, speaking of expensive toys with LCD screens....did you order the cintiq 21x? I guess i sold my old cintiq just in time muahahah.

Hey, this looks pretty good on my PSP. :lol
So there's no banding at all on the PSP? As expected, there was banding on my 16-bit Clie screen, but i forgot just how undersaturated the colors were on it compared to CRT, or even the picture of the LG Shog posted. Can't wait to see how good it look on my PSP.
