I shave like once a month, so its no big deal for me. I don't even know how to use a straight razor, I'm too scared I'll cut myself. :(

Shaving oils are great. I just wish that they would make better blades. I know i can used a Mach 3 for almost a month. And it doesnt go dull on me. I just dont shave good i guess. Cause by the end of the day watch out for mr beard.

Check out the new Mach 3 Power, it vibrates while you shave so you don't even feel the hair coming off of your face. I've never had a problem shaving in the past, so others who have may feel even more strongly about it, but I really like mine.

I hate shaving as my skin is ultra sensitive.

Same here except very dry as well as very sensitive. Although its going well for me now after plenty of trial and error as well as learning when i first started. Make sure you use the right products for your skin and follow the basic rules like dont press hard(be gentle on sensitive skin and less strokes), shave in direction of hair etc.

1. Get a Mach 3 Power.
2. Get Gillette Sensative shaving gel.
3. Get Gillette after shave.
4. Wet your face with hot water. Towel dry lightly.
5. Apply shaving gel.
6. Put shaver under scolding hot water (as hot as you can get).
7. Shave UP (not down).
8. When done, splash your face with freezing cold water. Dry.
9. Apply after shave.

It's simple, and you won't get burned.

Come on you oil shavers. Tell me where to buy it. I checked Target and they didn't have it. Unless I was looking at the wrong things.

Thats your way doesnt mean it will work for someone else. You should shave in direction of hair growth, that way you dont get ingrown hairs and alot less irritation. But each to their own.

I was under the assumption that you should put the shaver under cold water as it constricts the blade and makes it more efficient.

I've heard shaving up (or against the grain) can be bad as well, so I only do it when I want a really close shave.

I don't know if it's just me, but shaving downwards does absolutely nothing for me, I can only shave upwards.

Shaver goes under hot water not cold.

Shaving against hair growth isnt good for various reasons but some people are ok with it. Not generally recommended.

Hot water opens up the pores and makes the hair easier to cut. You get less razorburn that way. Shaving with the grain is what you are supposed to do. Also, a good shaving cream, like Edge, and a very good aftershave is required for a job well done. As well, don't use a razor with less than 2 blades.

I personally cannot stand Gillette products. I just hate them with a passion because they seem to make my skin even more sensitive to shaving than it already is. I prefer to use Neutrogina products - their Skin Clearing Shave Cream and their balm afterwards, it's great. I've been thinking of trying that new vibrating Mach3 though, just for a change from the Mach3 Turbo.

I use this stuff. It kicks ass although it's relatively expensive. I only cut myself when I do something stupid or just plain not paying attention. My skin feels great afterwards and I can get a damned close cut. I use a Schick Xtreme 3 razor, although I might try out that Mach 3 Power when I use up all my blades.

Same here. I do shave downwards, but if I want a proper shave I simply MUST shave upwards also. It's just not close enough shaving down only. Unfortunately, the fast majority of my cuts come from shaving upwards..:(

I tend to use King of Shaves products (the face wash pre-shave, the gel for the shave, and then the post-shave gel).

Yeah shaving upwards(against) makes it harder to get a good shave downwards(indirection). If you want to shave the other way it will take some time to get a good shave that way(maybe even months!) but you will guaranteed less cuts for someone like you.

Yeah what you use makes a huge difference. Also it does tie in with your skin. Look after your skin and your shaving will benifit.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

2) Don't use hot water to rinse off your blades when you are shaving. Heat makes metal expand and warp. Use Cold water and your blades will contract a bit making the blade tighter and sharper.

I think the reason people hate shaving is because so many people do it wrong, as evidenced by that bit of horrible advice to shave upwards.

It's pretty simple people:

1. If at all possible shave after you shower. Hot water softens your hair and opens pores.
2. Use a sharp razor with at least 2 blades and glide strip. If your hair is really long use an electric clipper to get it down to shaving length first.
3. Use a lubricant, but don't use too much. The idea is to get a thin layer even applied everywhere. It's also not a bad idea to let the cream/gel/oil to "soak" for a minute or two.
4. Never shave against the grain! It is the easiest way to fuck yourself up. Always shave down or back, with the grain.
5. Avoid going over areas more than once.
6. Use short deliberate strokes, cleaning the razor often. And don't try to set some sort of speed record.
7. rinse in cold water, it will tighten your skin and close your pores.

You're supposed to shave with the grain, downwards. If not you'll get ingrown hairs. And if you ever decide to have a beard, the hairs will be all over the place. You'll end up with one ugly beard.

Where did you get that?

I thoguht it was hot water for hygeine. I'm sure the blades are designed to work fine in hot or cold water.

Cant agree more and nice avatar.

Is it a mark of true laziness to be an advocate of dry shaving, with or against the grain as whim dictates?

I'm guessing yes.

Shave with the grain to get most of the hair off (longer portions), the come back against the grain to finish off and get a close shave.* Hot water to open the pores.

*Retards need not try this, you will cut yourself, first time being the only exception.

I stopped shaving. Like my hair that I stopped cutting months and months ago, my facial hair shall also have free reign. I dunno, I figure everyone needs to go through this in their life. I'll probably pussy out and clean up in a few weeks though.

Wrong. I always shave against, how have I fucked myself up? It doesn't hurt, no iritation, and actually gets the hair gone in one stroke. Shaving down is for women.

Yeah, I have barely any problems shaving against the grain. A little irritation once in a while, maybe an occasional in-grown hair.

I couldn't care less about the possibility that if I were to ever let my facial hair grow out that it'd be rather crazy due to shaving upwards. My facial hair isn't one consistent color so it'd look retarded.

I shave both up and down. How the hell can you only shave down and get rid of everything? Explain that one.

Same here. And it`s apparantly ok to do.

"If you find that shaving with the grain of your beard doesn't achieve a close enough shave, then you can always safely shave across the grain afterwards."

http://razordish.com/tips-advice/shaving/faq/faq3.htm

I guess it`s only bad to shave against the grain if you haven`t shaved with it first.

Yes! I read through this whole thread hoping someone would mention this. This man is right.

I love these man help threads, so great.

dont know if its just because i have fair hair or if its cause im a complete and utter pussy but one stroke with the grain leaves me bald as a babies backside (balder even) Thankfully i only have to shave kinda once a week, maybe even once a fortnight if im being slack. I say thankfully cause i look damn stupid with any kind of facial hair.

I've only started shaving every other day recently (I kinda like that day after stubble), and I've only done that because I grew sick of looking like a 1980's era porn star (with my mustache and goate)

Really sensitive skin here, so unfortunately every time I shave, I breakout. I should do the with the grain thing, but my hair hardly gets cut that way. I use alot of skin stuffs after the shave to keep the breaking out down to a minimum. Sucks, but i probably use as many face type skin care products as some girls do.

I'm shiny and glowy, though :)
