Well, the "holding it in" thing isn't the biggest contributory factor, so you shouldn't get
too alarmed. Inadequate water intake and/or high sugar intake can contribute to the formation of stones, and there is a fairly strong genetic component to it as well. Common kidney stones are composed of calcium oxalate or uric acid; the intake of both of these can be modified by changing your diet. So unless your family has a history of it, you shouldn't worry too much, particularly if you're under 25 years of age. However, keep in mind that this is just what I've heard, and I'm far from an authority on the matter.
All I know is that the doctor had mentioned this to my dad because he drives a cab and sometimes used to not pee all day from like 8 AM until 9 PM. So ever since he had the stone, he usually stops a couple of times each day to relieve himself.
