I have grown to despise maps in video games

Nah, i use them at times, especially as the open world games got bigger and bigger, not much fun being lost for ages in wilderness areas, but you don't have to look at the map, it's optional which can be fun as well, but i would still want them in any open world game to use as a choice.

Same with quest marks. Your rant reminds me of HBomberguy's several rants about how thanks to them developers don't even need to create NPC dialogue to guide you to a determined place, they just place a quest mark there and you just have to follow it.
