I just bougth KOTOR for pc

fortitude rolls
saving throws
to hit checks

if these mean nothing to you then have fun

PS Baldur's Gate 2 is better, but more geekish (DnD)
PSS Dark Side (psychotic killer) is funner than Light (chronic currency donator)

Yeah, don't install it.

Ok, seriously. When I was playing it, my ATI card was running it HORRENDOUSLY (this on a computer with specs seriously beyond even the "recommended" rig. Turns out, it was a driver problem. If you use an ATI card, make sure your drivers are upgraded, I know they have resolved the severe framerate problems my ATI 850 XT was having with when I tried playing the game a few months ago.

As far as "western style" RPGs. Kotor is by no means demanding, so I doubt you'll have any problems.

It was funny, I got to the... 2nd planet I think. Hell, whatever planet where the Jedi Academy is, the one with the large fields and grass. Even if I turned the effects, resolution, and such down to their MINIMUM, the game still couldn't render those scenes any better than single digit framerates. (Amusingly enough, the first planet ran FINE.) But once I upgraded to the then current drivers, everything was smoking right along again.

yeah that happened to every1 there was actually a quick way to fix it in some config file at the time.

Ahh, gotcha. I was REALLY late to the party. I didn't start playing Kotor I until a few months after I got the PC version of II. It was also a party I ditched quite early in the evening, to extend this tired metaphor. Bored to tears.

Seriously, get the Baldur's Gate PC rpgs (not the console hack 'n slashs) instead. Much better.

Dont let these guys fool you. Baldurs Gate is alot tougher to get into than KOTOR. I had tried to play pc style rpgs before, KOTOR was the first one I actually enjoyed.

I wouldn't wish Baldur's Gate 2 for their first western RPG experience on my worst enemy.

The game is excellent but VERY overwhelming.

Another thing I'll say to the game's credit, it does get somewhat better after the first planet.

I'd recommend foregoing morality and playing darkside also. Better ending, cooler force powers, funnier dialogue.

Only problem is that most quests devolve into fistfights, and you'll spend more time spitting in people's food and kicking their puppies than actually plotting something REALLY devious; but it sure as hell beats the borefest that is light side. Am I right people??

KOTOR ranks as one of the best gaming experience of my life. Its a masterpeice, i hope you're ready for its brilliance

Light side was fun, i felt real good helping out people and getting noticed for it.

Oh and don't forget the play the sequel afterwards.... it's mostly excellent with a few minor shortcomings. The storyline kicks the shit out of KOTOR's though.

you think so? I thought it was quite messy.

Naaa, I mean KOTOR storyline was pathethic.... I saw the major plot twist coming a mile away as it's all but thrown in your face.

Meanwhile I was guessing a lot of the times with KOTOR2's story. and the influence system is great.... I mean making Handmaiden a pure dark side character is quite fullfilling. The antangonists (save for the last boss) were pretty underwhelming and not developed but I still prefered it to the generic story KOTOR had.

KOTOR did do a better job of developing your party members but I liked the combat in KOTOR2 better than KOTOR.

Edit: But even if you odn't agree with me it's still worth playing, if only to make a judgement on it yourself.

Nice job picking it up. It's a great game. The sequel is good as well. If you like KOTOR's gameplay, then definitely pick up the sequel. I enjoyed it quite a bit and Kreia is easily one of the best characters I have seen in any medium as of late.

I played through the game several times, male/female and dark/light mixing and matching these two elements. Light side is brilliant because you actually want to help the characters but dark side is extremely fun because you get to exert your awesome power over the charcters. Both sides are fun and more than warrant a play through on each.

tips? This is my first western rpg, so please bare with me.

Be thankful it's not Anarchrox.

Tips, I used to use the statis field (I think it was called that...) and then unleash your power move.

Save the game regulary. I got all the way to the end part on <bleep> and the game crashed. And crashed everytime I reloaded. I never got to finish it at all.

Great game and like so many of Bioware's games, the "begining" seems to come four to five after you actually start playing. That you are enjoying it already should mean you are going to have a blast. Don't worry too much about "how" to play it if you are the type that likes to replay games. KOTOR's good/evil system makes the game worth playing twice so the second time around you should have a better idea of what powers and sabers work best for you. :)

Garrett, just break down and get an Xbox you fool! :P I told you a long time ago that KOTOR was the shit and you refused to listen. KOTOR2 I didn't enjoy as much mostly because it wasn't as challenging IMO and not as satisfying in the end.

Bastard, you used to talk shit about my wester rpg's

I'm glad I'm not hte only one who feels this way... Kriea does indeed rock. Who did her voice acting? It was REALLY well done.

I just noticed that this is a Western RPG thread, but no one has mentioned Planescape: Torment yet.

OK, now we're good.

KOTOR is a great game and a great RPG but, uh, it's not the best BioWare RPG.

Enjoy it!
If you don't want to fight the last boss 8 times be sure to learn some offensive DARK SIDE skill (like lightning)

It could be a great starting point for your journey to the western RPG area. Get Baldur's Gate 2 for the PC next. After finishing that you'll be ready for the best BlackIsle/ BioWare games: Planescape and Fallouts.

Anyone have any idea how long KOTOR2 is? I'm going to be finishing GTA:SA in the next few days and have been considering playing it. Since I don't get that much time to play games anymore, I don't want something that's going to completely monopolize my attention for months.

I think it was around 20-25 hours for me, but i could be wrong since its been a few months since i finished it.

WHAT THE FUCK?

I quick saved right at the beginning of a dualist fight. I beat him before, and when I finished the fight the gave froze. I reloaded my quick save, and instead of being able to FIGHT him, I have the TALK dialouge and he's just STANDING there.

It's not an FPS and it doesn't work that way.
