Valve just quietly redefined what PC gaming can be all while a delusional Microsoft desperately tries to tell everyone their PC is an Xbox

You mean an underpowered cube PC with windows?

If it's a PC just install Linux OR even SteamOS? Right?

lets not get crazy.... they basically just made a consoled spec pc. People have been doing that for years the problem is getting it so small.
Big thing here is - its Linux machine. Steam deck has amazing compactibilty (minus some kernel level anti cheat games) and you are getting that, with deticated steam os - no windows bullshit, linux desktop(option likely to dual boot if you want). It will all fall down on price, if they get it right. Windows is plague to gaming unironically, so valve is heading right direction

Sorry, I am not following. Linux machine ? you know you can have that on your PC in an hour right ?

Fuck even the PS3 had Linux. Not really sure how is this a big deal.

on the other hand. As you mentioned, you can't run a single big multiplayer game on this thing without getting banned to hell and back and probably hardware ban too because linux.

For single-player games that are actually compatible with Linux, it's fine. Probably better than the PC version too under the same specs. but for everything else? not really.

Most of the games I play regularly are multiplayer games. This steam machine to me is basically a retro device with some decent new games ( not heavy demanding games either unless your eyes wanna bleed with 720p or below even for a base frame upscaled to 4k with low graphics settings and FSR3 on performance for extra blidness. otherwise you ain't getting shit with that GPU and weak CPU.

Most people wont bother to install and setup linux on their pcs. Thats the thing. Im not expecting this to replace some people whole pcs, but like said for right price it can be really solid companion for like living room or if you are on the move. You could still stream mp games from your main pc, play or emulate other titles natively and so on. Also like its only 155x156mm cube. Thats neat af

Microsoft kept shouting about what they are going to do, trying to convince everyone that their new devices are going to be revolutionary - without, of course, actually releasing anything yet.

Valve kept quite and then showed us 3 actual, awesome products on a random Wednesday.

Just use Steam Big Picture Mode.
True, but what people having Deck will tell you is- the SteamOS experience is seamless and leagues ahead of Windows. It is really almost console-like. I admit even on Game mode some people might be annoyed by some tweaking e.g. choosing the right Proton version but this almost exclusively applies to really old games. I think if someone wants to play Thief The Dark Project they are ok with having to put in the work a bit (which 99% of the time takes 5 minutes or less).

The right price for this 8gb box should be 300$ max. The price will end up 500$ base ( that is what I believe ).

This is really a weak PC with parts that can't be upgraded, just like a weak laptop without a monitor.

It should act fine as a powerful retro device. some recent games that are not demanding at all ( Street Fighter, Silksong, and the like ).

But the minute someone thinks this will be a great console experience compared to the PS5 ( which is more powerful than this btw, and that thing is 5 years old and 400$ ? )

IF you have a decent steam library and you just want something under the TV to play these games because you cant pass a long HDMI cable from your PC to your TV or you are not into streaming ( even though moonlight and sunshine streaming for PC inside the house is fantastic ), then this device is for you.

At the end of the day, Steam has its fans ( I am one of them when it comes to their client on PC at least ), so I am sure this will sell a decent number. and I hope it does, this will pressure MS to do better windows. But honestly, this is nothing special, and it can't even play any of the big online multiplayer games which is all what 90% of the kids do these days.

ridiculous. 98% (I left a little wiggle room there) of "PC gamers" will never own a non-upgradable device like this due to the ever increasing needs of games and the eventual need to upgrade hardware.

if they want a "console" they will buy an actual console.
98% (ok maybe more like 90%) of PC gamer never upgrade their hardware anyway. This forum is not mirroring reality, this is a bubble of people who are enthusiasts.

And even here, some people seem to love the idea of a consoleised computer, like me.

I have the deck since day 1 and I'm still playing on that machine. Is it powerful? Nope. But it's convenient as fuck and it's really fun to tinker around with it. SteamOS is such a nice OS, im glad it finds a wider audience.

I just bought a new PC, but if that wouldn't have been the case, this machine would have 100% replaced my old i3770 + 1070ti computer for sure.

Right now I'm interested in the frame.
I have the PSVR2 with the computer adapter and I like it, but the nature of plug and play and being able to use the frame standalone is really appealing to me. Also the feature complete controller, unlike the PSVR2 ones

I love me some Valve but this isn't powerful enough for me.

Seems pretty well designed but for my use case, this isn't an option. I'd advise just building a small form factor pc inside a fractal terra or something.

Big Picture Mode is the same exact UI. Im using it right now with an Xbox ROG Ally X when i feel like it. Was using SteamOS with an Lenovo Legion Go. Same exact UI.

This piece is a bit tryhard imo. I mean Valve devices typically sell a fraction of Microsoft devices even if they have a higher brand favoritism in gaming discourse.

I mean if I had to bet today. Magnus would probably outsell this device.

Wich Valve devices have directly competed with Microsoft devices for you to make that kind of blanket statement? Magnus is rumoured to be 1200 dollars. Its a niche device just like Steam Machine. Except a lot more expensive

Am I going crazy, people have already forgotten that valve released a steam box before and it was kinda doa

Completely different time. Linux did not have the support that it does now. Plus steam is HUGE now. I see this thing selling between 5 to 10 million for valve and being a success leading to more products.

People that think this is redefining anything might be retarded.

SteamOS makes sense for handheld gaming, but next to none for desktop or living room gaming....unless you just dislike compatibility.

dual booting will be quite limited on the small box with 512gb. You either need the big one with 2TB or slap an extra SSD on it.
