Valve just quietly redefined what PC gaming can be all while a delusional Microsoft desperately tries to tell everyone their PC is an Xbox

Article is a bit hyperbolic. I don't think this thing will have nearly the impact that the steam deck had, or even Xbox series s for that matter.

It looks cool though, and I like the controller they made. It's just lame that it's RDNA3.

RDNA3 is a shocking disappointment.

So what's the problem?

The problem isn't with me. It's only with the people that will expect too much from a device like this and what it'll do to overall gaming. I like the competition. I've been waiting on Valve to drop their nuts. I just made a post on that today or yesterday funny enough, not knowing this was getting announced.

I like Valve as much as the next guy, unless they are PC Gamer apparently, but they didn't redefine anything. Valve made a console for PC games, which doesn't really excite me at all and I can't see anyone who is already a PC gamer wanting this thing. I honestly don't know who this is made for, especially given the terrible specs.

Valve is now offering an entire gaming package out-of-the-box with hardware (custom chip), operating system, and a store/gaming platform. The os being open source and non microsoft is already a little revolution.
They've offered up Steam Machines before. The OS has been around for years as SteamOS, and decades before as various Linux distros. Their store has been around for decades. There isn't anything particularly interesting about their new Steam Machine except potentially the price. If it's dirt cheap, they may well have something - if it's priced like a traditional console, it's DOA.

Who's doing that?

My post you quoted had nothing to do with any of that. Did you just want to get that off your chest or are you swinging at shadows?

Just imagine the headline if MS put out an underpowered cube PC with that controller. Just imagine. Valve fans are a cult.

Oh yeah, don't forget the VR headset likely 2.5x the cost of a Quest.
Without hand tracking, color passthrough, MR capabilities. Not shitting on it, as I like that Valve is participating in the market, just making an observation.

Lol, wot?

With what looks like a chiropractor's dream controller (for getting new patients), a medicore desktop (ugly to boot), and essentially a poor man's Quest 3 in black...

And that microSD in 2025 when even Nintendo have decided it isn't fast enough for gaming. It's not a Chinese emulation console.

Valve doesn't need to deceive its audience like Xbox does; they launch a PC and say it's a PC without problems. Xbox wants to launch a PC with Windows but tries to sell it as a console. In the end, Valve has beaten Microsoft to the punch again.

The irony is that I will probably sell my XSX to get the Gabecube instead because I doubt the XSX will support a Steam Controller (I play mostly CRPG and 4X so trackpads will be quite helpful!).
GabeCube...

You just sealed the deal for what I will refer to this as, forever. Thank you.

Performance should be similar to this little kit:

If it's affordable it will be a great entry level gaming machine to plug on the TV, with all the benefits of a full desktop machine + an almost console like experience (as much as you can have with Steam OS).

Interesting concept, if anyone can pull this off this is Steam, however an 8GB GPU seems a little too low down the food chain, especially in 2026.

"4k @ 60fps w/fsr set to ultimate performance and settings set to medium low. "

In all seriousness, Valve may get their PC out first, but MS doesn't seem to be gunning for the low end market with their next devices. In other words, I think making the statement that "Valve beat MS to the punch" is a mischaracterization.
