I love when people don't think I'm a "Gamer" (Jinfash wins w/post 214)

My friend who is in game development at my school invited me to a Halo party. I'm in Recording Engineer, so I didn't know anyone at the party. They were picking teams for a 5v5 match; I was picked last (H.S gym all over again lol). Whatever they don't know me, but the guy was like " I guess I have this guy". Rolling his eyes, then he says, " This game is nothing like COD". I didn't even say shit about COD; he just assumed that's only game I know. Then I started fucking with him asking questions like how you prone and can you run up walls. Now I don't think I'm good at Halo 3 maybe above the average player. The game was to 25 and I destroyed everyone, I was on personal mission to rip everyone a new asshole. I went 17-0 the look on the guys face was priceless. This stuff happens all the time; people just assume I don't know anything about games.

Does this happen to anyone else on Gaf. People just act smug like they are some "Hardcore" gamer. You’re some "Dudebro" who knows nothing.

I enjoy anything where you totally subvert expectations. Unfortunately I am cursed by being asian and wearing glasses so everybody assumes (correctly) that I am a huge nerd.

Then I started fucking with him asking questions like how you prone and can you run up walls.

Hahaha dead.

I do this online sometimes too, back when I was really great at CoD4 I would always enter a lobby with some friends I had never really played with before and always fool around and ask stupid questions like how do you shoot and just come out on top.

i don't know anyone who plays games IRL really. not since college dorms. sucks. I probably look geeky/alt/whatever enough that I'd be judged as a "gamer," though (in that setting)...as much as I hate the term.

do you look like a frat boy or something OP?

It's usually the other way round with me, people assume that I am gamer who knows everything about gaming.

The truth is I don't like being called gamer.

Well I don't fit the nerd look too well but I'm pretty sure no one would assume I'm a gamer and I can't think of a possibility where I could show that I am or that they would even care

I'm a body building junkie and serious basketball player, I enjoy the irony of wearing a playstation or naughty dog tshirt to the gym

I see this thread backfiring.

So OP, when else has someone labeled you a "non-gamer" to their detriment?

I went to tokyo naturally someone gave me a car to race due to looking fast and furious.
Sorry, just reminded me for some reason.

Wow you're so cool. I bet you get all the ladies.

Labels suck. I don't really surround myself with people that make a huge deal of whether someone looks like a gamer. WTF does that even mean. I can't wrap my head about people who worry what others think their "label" is, or those who actually are into making their whole identity about some hobby.

Man, I love the look on people's face when they doubt that I'm a gamer and I turn it around and ask them if they even heard of Shin Megami Tensei and Europa Universalis. Fuckin' priceless haha. It fills me with power watching them doubt their whole existence. I may be dressed like your dad but I know a thing or two about video games.

I don't think so?

LOL!

I went to a party once where these two guys were playing "competitive" smash. I asked to join and they said "we'll try to go easy on you".

I picked Link (which they told me was a horrible character to play as) and proceeded to annihilate them.

They then wanted to do one on one with me and I proceeded to win every round. It was very satisfying. :D

I go to a school with a big game development program, so yes, those guys are dicks who think they are the best gamers on the planet and that Dark souls is the second coming of Christ.

Reminded me of this...

"What does high score mean? High score, is that bad?"

Most people know I'm a gamer, even my co-workers.

The greatest thing is when younger people in the family come around (I'm 31), especially them and their friends.

A 15 year old cousin came to see us a few weeks ago and this story reminded me of it. He brought two other friends from school.

They wanted to play some split-screen CoD and a few other games. All 3 were talking trash to me, it was hilarious.

I wasn't sure how well I'd do...I'm sure I'm not as sharp as I was 5 or even 10 years ago, but I too absolutely wiped the floor with them in most games. In the 2 on 2 matches my side won by a landslide every match. They were speechless when I offered to go 3 on 1 with them...and won, lol (it was close though).

It can be fun getting that "gaming" respect. Doesn't matter elsewhere, and they weren't being factitious at all, but it instantly jumped back in my head reading the OP.

Is this what it is like when you can start threads?
Because if so, i have plenty of time.

Don't hint at thread whining or you'll have infinite time. ;)

Edit** Seems there will be some joining that theme though.

Now I don't think I'm good at Halo 3 maybe above the average player.
So you don't think you're good, but you are better than millions of people at it? C'mon man, there's some false modesty going on here, if you're better than other players more often than not I'd say that counts as 'good'! :-)

Conversely, it reminds me of people answering questions about their intelligence in tests, where virtually everyone thinks they are 'above average'. It's that kinda fallacy that means people accuse others of cheating when they lose, people really struggle to accept that lots of other people are also hovering around the same skill level but having a good day. Not many people think they are 'below average' at something they spend a lot of time at, whereas that's a statistical impossibility. Personally I just accept that I'm shit at online games.

I get this sometimes. The only thing pointing to me being a nerdy guy is my glasses I guess.. I'm 6', 245 lbs, and I played football all through highschool. If anything I'd probably get the same reaction to the cod statements because of the "dudebro" phenomenon that has swept over the gaming community.

I have to say, that "dudebro" category is one of the dumbest things in gaming I've ever heard.

People like you who call in rare Halo killstreaks like "QuasiStealthBrag" sicken me.
