I'm having one of those "I love videogames all over again" moments. Last game to have that effect on you?

The last game i had that feeling with is BoTW. I had not been a Zelda fan since N64. It was great.

That “feeling” you are describing is rare in my opinion, and not something we see often.

I believe i saw it the most in the 360/ps3/wii generation. Mario Galaxy, Uncharted, Mass Effect 2, Kinect Sports, Wii Sports, Guitar Hero, NHL 09, all gave those feelings.

2023 was a big year for this for me. I went to see the Mario movie and ended up buying a Switch OLED. Odessey was one of the funnest experiences I've had with a game, took me back to being a kid.

I also finally got round to Cyberpunk 2077 when Phantom Liberty came out. The base game had been sitting on my Steam library, unplayed since Dec 2020. I lost a month of my life to it.

Yakuza Like a Dragon. It rekindled my love for turn based RPGs. And it was a Yakuza game so for me it was a win-win.

Its on sale right now.. never bought any of the yakuzas.. but the turn based push is itching me to try it ..

On topic: Rebirth for me is pure modern EE FF diarrhea .... but is good that any game can have this affect on players. Thats what is all about.

I usually have a few of those a year, those are what end up on my GOTY list. Most recently was Split Fiction that I just finished, before that Metaphor and Astro Bot.

It was way better than it was supposed to be. If you want to play a 50hr rpg with several job classes to choose from, cutscenes galore, and minigames then buy it. The game was meant for newcomers so you wouldnt have any issues with the story.

Prince of Persia The Lost Crown last year.

This year’s games am still playing. KCD2, Avowed both have been promising. Might start Split Fiction next.

As for falling into a rut, I usually get into retro games if that happens. Something like Rebirth usually makes it worse for me. Cause its cause of AAA games it happens in first place.

Y'all saying "ThIs IS tHe WoRSt GeN" should find another fucking hobby

It's not the games. It's you.
hum...this can happen in any generation. whatever that means. i don't think about gaming as generations anyway.

that wasn't even the deal with this topic. this could have happened to you during even the ps3 era lol.

Yoshi's Island - Never gave it a chance, big mistake
Metal Slug 2 - The best slug in the series
Armored Core 6 - Sublime mission based merc action with a strong build experimentation focus

Highfleet. A masterpiece in UI design. Crazy atmosphere for such a game of limited scale.

Cruelty Squad. Top shelf immersive sim.

Balatro. Pure fun.

It is the WORST gen. Playing PS4 titles just to get back that enjoyment. Wilds was only an appetizer but after nearly 4 years off "next-gen" and this is what they have to offer? Fuck that shit. Maybe Death Stranding 2 or GTA6 will give me that fix but I have never been so disappointed in a generation before. I only bought 1 FUCKING exclusive for the PS5 and that is Demon Souls Remake. A REMAKE. Thank the modders for bringing life to PC with high resolution packs and ultrawide mode, or I would've been done with gaming altogether.

Absolutely Cozy
Cozy thread. The last games that made me feel that way were Breath of the Wild and Animal Well. If you're losing your love to gaming as a medium then those can help you remember what it's all about.

Returnal

Most recently that is. The only other time I fell into a rabbit hole of pure gaming bliss to that degree was the first Dark Souls after I hadn't been into gaming for years.

Tunic and Ori come to mind.

I have these quite often, lol. You actually do have to seek them out and yes Rebirth had a few of those moments for me. LOVED the card game for a time it was life.

Anyway, my brother is actually really needing that moment right now. He's playing less and less and what he does play he doesn't enjoy. He was always better than me at most games and I'm actually really good, so he was great. A natural. He couldn't even beat the 2nd boss in NG2....we started at the same time and I beat the game and he quit at 2nd boss....

Truth is he's burned out. He really needs to find this moment in gaming or I'm worried he may quit for a few years or forever. Sometimes what we can find ourselves so easily, others have a hard time finding. Remember that just because you love gaming doesn't mean that the struggle isn't real for others who just want to hold on to their hobby until they can find love for it again.

To those who can't find this moment, listen to me. You are not alone. All of us go through moments of doubt and pain over our hobby, but don't give up. Nothing in this life worth doing is 100% love and fun. Don't let the humdrum of the rat race or some weird temporary phycology rob you of your passion for gaming. If you don't love it now, don't worry, you will again. Keep it safe until then. Know that we are out here, playing, keeping it alive, waiting for you to return.

Too many mid games get the limelight, and are perpetuated as being better than they actually are.

Then there's all these hidden gems, that not nearly as many people know about, and they end up never playing as a result.

Can't blame average gamer for getting burned out, as the former is shoved down people's throats.

I'm sure some of you (most of you?) have had those moments where your hobby isn't doing it for you. You are either sick of playing games for a few months / years or no game really clicks to the point you want to go back and play it when you can't do that. This is still your hobby but that doesn't mean you're always on a high playing all these games coming out.

Right now i'm going through a "I love videogames all over again. This is why i started playing them in the first place" moment like i didn't have in years and it came from an IP that i always liked...but hasn't grabbed me for some entries: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

final-fantasy-vii-rebirth-cover-art.jpg

I bought it on preorder over a year ago. If i'm doing this topic right now it means i didn't have many hopes for it and only started playing it like 2 weeks ago...but holy shit?

I heard some criticism because of all the minigames, etc...but this such a huge step up from the original i don't even know where to start. From voice acting, the open world sections done right (instead of like Ubisoft-type games), etc. The graphic upgrade alone is something. I'm playing on PS5 Pro btw...so 60fps upscaled and it melts your eyes. Gameplay loop is addictive as hell as well. Soundtrack is honestly impressive. There are moment i just stay put listening to some kick ass track that's playing which rarely happens nowadays for me. It's actually satisfying to be with these characters again, and be a part of this world.

There's so much to do but it never feels overwhelming.

I'm now on chapter 8 and loving this shit! Th production values alone are through the roof. The game feels expensive, if you know what i mean. But expensive done right at least.

When was the last time this has happened to you? And what was the game?
Holy shit- are we the same person?

Real quick, say your favorite fruit if it was and Animal and what its favorite color would be?

*BREATHESNIN* Strawberry would be a Flamepoint Siamese and it would totally be Purple!

WHAAAA!

IQ diminishing jokes aside -

THIS IS MY EXACT situation with Rebirth right now.

I tend to have a few games a year that’ll grab me by the chiclets and then I’ll feel lost and stumble around not grabbing onto anything.

I preordered Rebirth last year after finishing Remake and it just wouldn’t click for me - I couldn’t even finish the opening…but after the grasslands it clicked and I’m 50 hours in and loving it

The worst part of it for me is that it has to end, and the rest of it isn’t available yet.

I've been going through a bunch of indies and AA games and found some joy in gaming again. I don't know, AAA games just aren't doing it for me these days. I buy them and play them for a few hours and then go back to playing whatever janky ass indie game or old game remake I was playing before.

I played KCD and KCD 2 pretty much right after and that entire 200 hour journey made me really appreciate what we can achieve today. Gaming is awesome despite all the bs that surrounds it.

I haven't loved a video game since Skyrim.

I will always love "video games" but I have hated the industry for years now.

I hope to love the crop of action games coming our way: Lost Soul Aside, Phantom Blade Zero, Ninja Gaiden 4, and Tides of Annihilation.

I have never played a Ninja Gaiden game before. I recently played Ninja Gaiden Sigma and it's quickly become one of my favourite games ever. Hard to believe this game has been there all this time and I didn't experience it. I started up Ninja Gaiden 2 Black immediately after. I'm also looking at finishing Ninja Gaiden Black as I hear that is the better version of the first game.

Super Mario Galaxy. I was on the verge of quitting games shortly before it released. The Dreamcast was dead, my three favorite genres, fighting, jrpgs, and survival horror, were all in the shitter and the rise of bland looking first person shooters was a giant turn off. I had gotten a Wii for Christmas since Wii Sports was fun and I was pleased that they finally made a good Zelda game again but it was Galaxy that reminded me just how special video games could be. It totally reignited my love of Nintendo and the hobby.

The meta of my gaming life is looking for the next one, finding it, repeat. Occasionally get lazy and play something that's just okay but there are enough games out there that get me super pumped and invade my thoughts.

For context, if I find two or three inspiring games a year, that's a good year. I play a lot more games but mostly not to completion and just enough time to assess them like 5-20 hours. When I find a beast, I lay into it. I've got like 120 hours on rebirth and am on my third run of wanted dead. I'm wringing those out for everything they're worth.

There's some that hit me in a different way and I enjoy them in between. These are largely based on game/history-appreciation. So I played ninja gaiden w when it came out because I never got a long with those games but they are held in such high prestige that I wanted to try again. And I played indiana jones and the fate of atlantis because I missed several of the lucas adventure anthology back in the day. Puzzling places because I wanted to see that concept in action. These games were great but didn't consume my soul or anything.

Who did they think I was shilling for?
The Evil Within. Played on 360 when it came out 10 or so years ago and recently felt like replaying it again. I fell in love with it all over again and started a new playthrough on a harder difficulty as soon as I finished it. Haven't done that in ages, probably since RE4.

Last time I felt it was Elden Ring. What a absolute joy it was to have a couple of weeks at launch to just get immersed and explore. Since then though its been just burnout, a lot of generic, unambitious ‘AAA’ games.
Thank god for games like Helldivers 2 and Monster Hunter Wilds.

BG3, definitely. I remember feeling "wow, this is how I used to feel playing video games.. I had almost forgotten games can actually be THIS good and have actual story, characters and meaningful choices".

Also Astrobot, that game made me feel actual joy. I had to stop myself from playing it every day so it would last a bit longer. Compare that to Super Mario Odyssey where I had to force myself to even finish it since I was just sitting there thinking "ok, when does this game start to get good or fun at all?"

I went from nothing to play to adding Assassin's Creed: Shadows and also Xenoblade Chronicles X: DE. I never played it originally so it looks like I am in for a treat. And then I may add Trails Through Daybreak, depending on my research. Huzzah! Gaming may have finally gotten good for me again... *fingers crossed*
