I'm having one of those "I love videogames all over again" moments. Last game to have that effect on you?

I get that feeling all the time.

I don't understand people who are not happy with gaming overall. There are sooooo many great games.

And yes, Rebirth is fucking fantastic.

I have my ups and downs. Last time I had that feeling of being swept away, drawn into a game again was when I played Indiana Jones and the Great Circle in December. What an adventure. Just what a really good game is about for me. Before that Silent Hill 2 and Astro Bot.

Now I am a bit down again, too busy with work and children and tired in the evenings to play. Hopefully I get that Indy effect again soon.

Lemme just say I got 99 games installed on my Pro (thank fuck for SSD extra storage) and I literally love tf out of every game I have.

I don't "love" gaming how I used to when I was in my 20s, but I literally have a hundred fucking games I "love" installed rn. It's nuts. Choice-paralysis every time I fire the thing up.

Not gonna drop my whole install list but the last five games I played were

MLBTS 25
CFB 25
Slay the Princess
Persona 3 Reload
Mafia: Definitive

And the next five were

Ghost of Tsushima
God of War (2018)
GT7
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim

I'm already a pig in shit and I got 89 more to go. Shit is nuts if your head is in the right place and you stick with playing games you actually enjoy.

Cyberpunk.

Currently playing Astrobot and just going through the motions with that game.
Same . Astrobot is just too damn easy. It's a design flaw afaic. A platformer should be designed so that you can just barely make a jump for a given obstacle ...in this game you can platform with room to spare every time. Timing based obstacles are more forgiving than they should be. Enemies? One hit kills is fine but again it's too damn forgiving ...just give them a whack or jump in the air above them for an insta kill.

Is it charming and has neat gimmicks? Yes, but it doesn't utilize them in ways that provide a simple challenge. Even Mario Odyssey ...which by Mario standards was easy, had more challenge than this. It's a shame because this game could've been great with how creative and technically impressive it is. Character moves too slow and has few movement abilities. When's the last 3d platformer that had real challenge? Penny's big breakaway and a Hat in Time probably ..

Yeah. I'm going through it too. I turned 50 last year and is probably gone 5 or so years without really playing too much. I got really into meta quest for a while but that's been untouched in 6 months. My PS4 Pro hadn't been turned on in 2 years. Id just found the occasional game, like Control that hooked me but then I was off again for months.

Indiana Jones on Gamepass is what seems to have pulled me back for good.

I absolutely adored everything about it, even got 1000/1000 and felt slightly sad when it was done. But rather than drift off again I looked at what Gamepass had coming next and I've just finished Avowed which I really enjoyed and now I'm waiting for Atomfall.

I know MS and Gamepass aren't exactly flavour of the month but it's perfect for an old codger like me. I pay my subscription (which I was doing anyway for my daughter) and don't pay anything else. Plus it takes me back to the early 360 years where the community was moving on mass to each new release. If the second half on the year matches the first I'm sorted

I'm probably gonna get some heat for that, but... for me that was Visions of Mana. It had been a while since I got so absorbed into a game that I kept playing until 2am - and I believe the previous one was the Trials of Mana remake. Truly a wonderful experience from start to finish.

After bouncing of elden ring on ps5 at release, I'm 40 hours in on pc in a week 😂. Can't stop playing or thinking about this game. It might be the greatest game of all time, legit.

I think I'm a souls sicko now 😂😭

Last big one for me was when the Covid lockdowns hit - busting out all my old consoles from storage.
>
Playing Genesis' MUSHA on an old CRT.
And then T16's Legendary Axe.
DoDonPachi and many other shmups in TATE on that same CRT.
-
Then the deluge hit: Segas racing library on Saturn, Record of Lodoss War Dreamcast, PS1 Jrpgs, Wii's SnP2.
Plus many, many classic Nintendo 1st party stuff.

It was also then when I realized how shite modern gaming is in comparison.

I have this feeling all the time - I am quite selective on what games I play and I feel pretty confident I will enjoy it. I do love when something really surprises you like Indiana Jones where it just clicked with me and I loved every second of playing it.

I’m kind of going through a funk right now. Currently playing Robocop, but I’m just going through the motions. Can’t really say I’m enjoying it.

I’ll see it through, but I’m still seeking that game that will pull me in for a bit.

OP, i get you.

I never played FF. I laughed at people who played games like FF. Then i started playing Rebirth, and got told off for not playing the vii remake first - so played that.

I was blown away by how good it is. It drags on but its a very solid game and i now understand why FF has a following. I cant wait to finish the remake and jump into rebirth :messenger_fire:

Oh if you're enjoying Remake you will be blown away by Rebirth then, specially once it really opens up and clicks

Same here too ! The only 2 games I’ve finished for the last few years are Elden Ring and Silent Hill 2

I’m used to finish games but nowadays I’ve bought plenty and dropped them easily. I think I’ve found the issue , it’s very likely I don’t feel RPG games anymore. It felt like I’m interacting with a bunch of text pulled from the database based on a fixed set of conditions. And also they felt like a chore to play nowadays. I dropped FF7 Remake ,Rebirth , Dragon Dogma 2 , Avowed etc exactly because of this reason. Travel x distance to collect and kill x amount of something , collect x amount of something to craft something …. Ughh :messenger_dizzy:

Nowadays ,I enjoy playing MP more like Apex and SF for the dynamisms

I really liked Rebirth as well. The last one though is KCD2. It’s such an amazing game and despite not having a fantasy element, it has so much to offer. I highly recommend it, it’s very well worth the monetary and time investment.

The writing is surprisingly mature, although there is plenty of humor. Approach to queer and side quest resolution is very broad.

NPCs are well written and have great in game behavior patterns. And so much more. Even normally tedious stuff like alchemy is kind of fun. It’s just an awesome game to get you back excited about gaming.

I'm sure some of you (most of you?) have had those moments where your hobby isn't doing it for you. You are either sick of playing games for a few months / years or no game really clicks to the point you want to go back and play it when you can't do that. This is still your hobby but that doesn't mean you're always on a high playing all these games coming out.

Right now i'm going through a "I love videogames all over again. This is why i started playing them in the first place" moment like i didn't have in years and it came from an IP that i always liked...but hasn't grabbed me for some entries: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

final-fantasy-vii-rebirth-cover-art.jpg

I bought it on preorder over a year ago. If i'm doing this topic right now it means i didn't have many hopes for it and only started playing it like 2 weeks ago...but holy shit?

I heard some criticism because of all the minigames, etc...but this such a huge step up from the original i don't even know where to start. From voice acting, the open world sections done right (instead of like Ubisoft-type games), etc. The graphic upgrade alone is something. I'm playing on PS5 Pro btw...so 60fps upscaled and it melts your eyes. Gameplay loop is addictive as hell as well. Soundtrack is honestly impressive. There are moment i just stay put listening to some kick ass track that's playing which rarely happens nowadays for me. It's actually satisfying to be with these characters again, and be a part of this world.

There's so much to do but it never feels overwhelming.

I'm now on chapter 8 and loving this shit! Th production values alone are through the roof. The game feels expensive, if you know what i mean. But expensive done right at least.

When was the last time this has happened to you? And what was the game?
Rebirth... while having alot of modern sensibilities that can hinder an enjoyment on a game, like enemy camps (monster hunts), towers etc. Still maintained a lot of the whimsy and imagination that the original 7 had.

It absolutely gave me the same feeling last year. although it will sadly drop the closer you get to the end, especially if you are like me who tries to complete any sidequests 100% before the golden path.

but those are minor gripes. From start to finish as just a single player adventure RPG romp it really does recapture older times, again so long as you speed past or ignore the Modern open world design it can have.

lol I play games so infrequently these days, the answer to your question is literally every game I play. Like, oh I should do this more often, I really like this.

Just wrapped on Braid Anniversary Edition (Switch) within the last month... absolutely fantastic. This game needs more attention.

Welp, I went from nothing to play to:

Assassin's Creed Shadows (PS5)
Tales of Graces f Remastered (PS5)
Baldur's Gate 3 (I didn't know it had console mod support!) (PS5)
Xenoblade Chronicles X: DE (it will be my first time playing!) (Switch)
Super Mario RPG (Switch)

Now I am so overwhelmed lol.

And DOOM: The Dark Ages is coming, as well as Lost Soul Aside. This may be a good time for me again in gaming! Huzzah! /blog

FF7 Remake I'd say.

Got my PS5 in 2020, could barely play it, sold it, got it again in 2023, but barely played any game on it (lack of time, good setup - I don't own a TV). And then several months ago, I got myself the Portal, and decided to boot FF7 Remake (never played an FF game before), was blown away.

Got myself Rebirth on sales while I was finishing Remake, decided to not burn myself into too much FF, now playing it (end of Chapter 10), fantastic game.
