"I need a new PC!" 2010 Edition

Is there any way to tell if it's offered at my school, other than going there? I'm out of school right now.

You could call up the campus bookstore. That's generally where you buy them, I believe.

Quick question to all you PC gaming experts: I will like to replace my HD3870 X2 card for some ATI card that does not waste that much electric power. What card could you recommend that could be in its same range of power, not that expensive, and not that power hungry?

For power consumption your X2 is using about as much power as a 5850 so it's all up to your price point really. The best value for lower end stuff is probably a <100$ GTS 250, some 4850's could be around there too but aren't as strong as the 250. For the newer generation cards I wouldn't bother with anything less than a 5770 but for 150$+ i'm not very impressed with it's performance.

TBH at this point in time the only cards worth getting unless you've got money to blow are:GTS 250,4890,GTX260 1GB. These are the best bang for the buck cards at the moment.

Have you ordered all of your parts already?
Fry's has the i7 980X on sale for ~$776, in store only. I would've posted that earlier, but considering how 99% of the users in this thread aren't in the market for one...

Really?!

No I haven't ordered it yet. I wanted to post here to see if anything could be improved or changed before doing so.

Any idea how long that sale will be going on?

Previous post about my setup:

Alright PC Master Race..the day/month is nearly upon me. The time to sit atop the gaming hierarchy is so close I can taste it. Here is what my near final build aka 'The Beast' looks like:

CASE: Antech 1200 Full Tower
MOBO: ASUS P6X58-D
CPU : Core i7 980x
GPU : EVGA GTX 480
RAM: Corsair XMS3 6GB
PSU: Corsair 750HX 750W
HDD: Intel X-25 80GB SSD
HDD: Samsung F3 1TB
DRIVE: Sony DVD Drive

Other: Arctic Thermal Compound

Price: $2,496 (under my budget of 2.5K by 4 bones!)

Didn't care to put a Blu-ray drive in this since I have a PS3 (and it'll be getting the 3d update in September).

I know the 980x comes in at 3.3 ghz..but I wanted to try and push it to as close to 4 ghz as possible. I know it comes with a heatsink, but I'm not sure if that'll be good enough to do what I'm asking. If not, any suggestions on some aftermarket coolers for the CPU (do not want to go the liquid route)?

Also will that PSU be enough for this system? Any additional suggestions (different mobo, ram etc ) would be appreciated.

I may cave and get the Palit, I've only used XFX cards and have never had any problems w/ them, how are they as a manufacturer?

I have a Palit 4870 and have been fairly happy with it. It's a dual fan cooling system with a larger and a smaller fan. The larger fan runs are variable speed but the smaller one runs at 100% and is loud as hell. Fortunately I could unplug the smaller one and the larger one still provides great cooling.

I'm not familiar w/ OC'ing. But could I get the $220 card and simply increase the speeds to the $250 card?

Also, are these the only 460 cards coming out probably? Or can we expect some more in the coming weeks?

I got my 980x to 4.7 stable on water... I haven't tried it on air.

I'm running a 4.4 Ghz 24/7 overclock, but unless you're doing extreme benching, 4.2-4.4 for 24/7 will ensure that your CPU won't bottleneck any other component in your build.

I hit 4 really easy on water, so I'm pretty sure it's doable on air.

Edit: Change your chassis to the Corsair 800D. Seriously, it's the best case I've EVER used.

If you were in North America I'd recommend cases like Antec 900-2, Antec Performance One series, Cooler Master HAF 922, CM 690-2, CM Storm series, Lancool K-60/K-62. Lian Li proper also has a few aluminium cases falling into the $100 US range like this

About £80 including VAT. Add a second intake fan and/or a 120/140mm top exhaust and you would have a great, quiet case for not very much money. Take a look at Youtube and some tech site reviews. I don't know how Scan's prices compare to other retailers, as far as any of the cases I mentioned, so maybe UK PC GAF can chime in on that.

Sadly, Fry's refuses to let me give them money by opening a location near me, so I'm not sure how their b&m sales run. I heard about the sale on Thursday/Friday. Here's a link to the site listing if you want to grab the item number and give them a call for in store availability.

does the Palit 460 1GB beat an XFX 5850 1GB?

We'll have to wait for official benchmarks to be sure, but most likely it will fall somewhere between the 5830 and 5850 (approximately near the 465). It is highly overclock-able, however, and so at maximum stable speeds it might be approaching the 5850. Mine should be here Wednesday or Thursday, so I'll be sure to post my findings then.

argg, advice please!

I just ordered my new rig, and got a 5770. Should I return this right when I get it for the new Nvidia card? Does anyone know what neweggs return policy is?

VGA Standard Return Policy

* Return for refund within: 30 days
* Return for replacement within: 30 days

This is our Standard 30-Day Return Policy. Items covered by this policy (those products for which Newegg states "This item may be returned for a replacement or refund within 30 days only") must be returned to Newegg within 30 days of the invoice date for this policy to apply. “Return” constitutes receipt of the product by Newegg, and not the mere issuance of an RMA.

The following conditions are not acceptable for return, and will result in the merchandise you have returned to Newegg being returned to you:

* Cards exhibiting physical damage
* Cards that are missing the manufacturer label containing model number, part number or serial number
* Cards that are missing the manufacturer warranty label
* Cards returned without all included accessories, bonus games, and documentation

I'm really, really concerned about water cooling. I dunno I just shudder at the thought of something going wrong and leakage occurring and bam...computer is done. Are there any beginner guides to water cooling or something?

As far as OC'ing goes...I just wanted to get it to 4 ghz and call it a day.

alright...sigh of relief. I will look at how the benchmarks turn out for Nvidia's card, and then make a decision. It is $65 more then I payed for the 5770 and I already planned on upgrading the 5770 sometime next year to one of the big boy cards, so im not sure what I will do...

Hey guys. Need to build a PC for a relative. 500 dollar budget. Already have a monitor, keyboard and mouse. I would prefer to go intel. Do not want a gpu, onboard graphics should suffice. Can anyone put a build up for me? Thanks!

I know you explicitly said that you wanted Intel but in my humble opinion, any user that wouldn't need a dedicated graphics card won't notice if the difference in performance between a cheap Athlon or Intel dualcore. Also, at the $500 range for what I assume is just a home PC for browsing the net, the biggest cost will probably be your OS so maybe a pre-built machine from any of the big names might be a good choice. Looking at deals sites like techbargains might find you something you can order without too much hassle. In fact, you can probably find something okay $400 and maybe pocket the difference :P

Nah I'm getting 7 for 15 dollars already via student discount. That's a non issue. I also like the longer warranty pieces have versus the pre builts.

I'm thinking i3 but wouldn't mind going i5. Again no need for dedicated gpu. I an building myself.

I saw a NewEgg video recommending that I assemble the PC parts outside of the case, hook everything up and test it out first. If it works, THEN put it in the box.

Is this a good thing to do? It seems unsafe and a waste of time to me.

Just get them a prebuilt store machine.

If you really must build it yourself then I just don't understand the insistence to go Intel. A general use PC like that would be much better served with a Athlon ii X4 630 or similar. Plus, this will earn you more upgrade options down the line.

Why would it be unsafe?

And it's a fairly good idea. Better to do that, then set it up in the case find out something doesn't work and have to troubleshoot in a cramped case.

I don't know. It just seemed that having the components out in the open would lead to problems. I'll be sure to do this method then.

As far as steam goes, I just need to copy the entire steamapps folder to an external drive? Do I have to do this with the backup option in steam or will a simple copy/paste do the trick?

Once Windows 7 is installed, I can format my 640GB WD. Any recommendations as far as that goes?

How do I go about installing Steam on a different drive? My OS will be on the SSD so thats where Program Files will be and thats where steam will want to go. https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?p_faqid=231

Lastly, Im not going to install a ton of programs to the SSD but was curious as to what you guys put on yours? Open Office? Photoshop? Any suggestions here will help.
For Steam I think the best way is to use a 'Symbolic Link'. The files will be on your 640GB, but it will think it is on C: (So I understand). Steam can only be installed on your main drive. Stupid, I know.

Formatting you can just do a quick format via windows. As for programs on SSD try to put as many small ones as you can squeeze on there.

Anti Virus
MS Office / Word / etc.
Monitoring software
Photoshop
Any amount of small 10-50MB programs.

Newegg return help:
This item is covered by Newegg.com's VGA Standard Return Policy.

* Return for refund within: 30 days
* Return for replacement within: 30 days
That is what it lists for my 5850. It has been opened. Will I be charged a restocking fee or anything? Or will I get a straight refund?

Not at all. Only issue is static electricity. Just don't assemble on carpet and use a wristrap grounded to your case

Opened is tough. I was using my 500GB HDD and found out that a faster 640GB came out for $5 more about 3 days after. I called up and explained the situation and I got them to send me a shipping label + refund the full amount + and ordered the new 640GB for me.

Newegg customer service is really good but don't be surprised if you do get charged a restocking fee since you have actually used it.

Just touching things by the edges and grounding yourself (touch something metal, like a door knob) occasionally also works ok if you lack the wriststrap. Also, don't shuffle your feet on carpet. :lol

I RMA'd ram once and I got them to give me a label. I ended up not sending in the RMA though because I figured out the RMA through the manufacturer(Gskill) was a lot better cause you were allowed to send in only one stick

My RMA with G.Skill went fantastic. They didn't need a receipt, its lifetime, I sent my sticks in and got new sticks back in a grand total of 4 days.

I was out of town while waiting for my sticks to get back, so I'm not sure how long they took. But the fact that I only had to send in one stick and I could still operate was pretty badass imo.

And yes, I took my computer out of town with me:lol

I wouldn't 5850 OC like a beast as well and gets near 5870 levels unless you got a non reference card then you might be in trouble. Speaking on the 460 if the card is already out why our there no official review yet?

Got a question here. What's the diff between the ripjaw and the eco ram? I read that it's 1.35v for the eco, 1.5v for the ripjaw, so what does that mean in the practical sense? The difference between all of these is only 10 bucks (CDN prices).

I'm not really sure whether I should go for ATI or not. I'm having such a shit time with their drivers. Can't upgrade past 10.2 because every version after that gives me some sort of overscan issue where it reverts to 10% overscan whenever I load a game. Maybe I should look into the 460.

I have a non reference XFX card

Nightz said:
I've seen the word a few times recently, but what does "reference" and "non-reference" mean?
nVidia produces a card. Other companies can tweak this card (add more regulators, add more RAM, different cooler, etc.) to make it non-reference.
Normally it is used loosely to non-standard coolers since there are only a few truly non-reference GPUs (Palit mainly).

1.35V uses less power (tiny amount). If you have an i5/i7 the RAM voltage is linked so you don't want to go above 1.65V.
I'd just get the cheapest sticks on there.

No.

Just a more serious competition for the HD5830. Overclocked comes close but 5850 also overclocks, right?

The_Inquisitor
AMD is better for the same budget.

Athlon II X4 635 2.9Ghz $99
ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 $108
G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1333 2x2GB $97
Seagate 7200.12 500GB $55
COOLER MASTER Gladiator 600 $55
OCZ ModXStream Pro 500w $60
LG GH22NS50 $24
$498

Was looking for quieter PC fans. Ended up going with 2 Noctua 120mm and 1 Noctua 140mm. These will replace the antec fans my three hundred case came with. Nice fans, but kinda loud. Will report back once they're in.

Next on the list is an SSD once 250GB gets cheaper and I won't have to hear a stupid platter spinning.

Any ProTips on reducing CPU fan "revving," btw? It feels hyper-active to me how fast it changes as the clock ticks up for a few seconds when I open an app..
