"I need a new PC!" 2010 Edition

PC oracle can you give me your opinion on this setup?

Intel Core i5 - 760
Board Asus P7H55-M
6GB DDR3 1333 MHZ
HDD 1TB
ASUS GTX 470

I'm getting an already built one, I know that I would be better off building the rig myself but I really don't have the time to give to a project like this.

That mobo supports dual channel, not triple, so go for 4 gigs and save a few bucks.

Thank you kind sir! The PC is pre-built so I think that I can't change the configuration pre-purchase. Is this RAM configuration in this board detrimental to the performance? Sorry but it's been a long time since I dwelve in PC matters... bare with me. And thanks again.

It'll work, and yes, performance will be slower with that kit because it'll revert to single-channel mode. However, it's not really noticeable in real-world applications. Maybe like 5%. On the plus side, you've got more RAM.

Ok, I've got an updated list (for all you following, of course) of specs for my first build. These are the parts I've bought already:

AMD Athlon II X4 640 Propus 3.0GHz
CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
OCZ ModXStream Pro OCZ700MXSP 700W ATX12V V2.2 / EPS12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready
500gb seagate sata drive
antec 300 black steel case

To finish everything up, I've been looking at this motherboard and GPU:
ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 AMD 790X ATX AMD Motherboard
SAPPHIRE 100283-3L Radeon HD 5770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16
I plan on buying another GPU when I have the money, but I figure this board will be optimal for that. I RMA'd my first board, not realizing that the 2 PCIe 16x slots are 16x4x. I figure this one has what I'm looking for. Any input on the specs? Specifically the ones I haven't ordered yet?

Also, any money-saving tips would definitely help.

2 gigs of ddr2 533(should have been 667 but cheap ass dell put 533 in fro old pc and labeled it as 667)

We finished the pc last night and the CPU running idle was from 35-56% and the ram was running idle at 500.
Do you mean speed or CPU load? (If CPU speed it's simply a power saving thing)
Do you have an intensive background process like an index program?

Also its possible you may need to set the RAM to it's default speed in the BIOS, but no that should not matter.

Bad RAM or CPU doesn't make a CPU load more, it works or produces errors (Blue Screen), or won't boot at all.

My guess is that there is some program using your CPU cycles (open task manager and look under 'processes' to see what is eating your cycles.

If you can stretch to a 460 that's a better value. Ridiculous how the 5770 has gone up in prices.

How much of a difference in performance is there between the 768 and the 1GB? The 768 is much more in my price range.

The Asus GTX 460 1GB is an absolute beast. Completely stable at 900mhz core on stock voltage with my Antec P182 case fans on low.

OCCT stable? if so then that's great at stock voltage.

Performance is not drastically different. For most the 1GB version would be preferable. It's not an issue until you hit the RAM limit, but the 1GB version does have slightly more bandwidth, making it a tad faster.

*I actually re-looked up some benches, and in most cases the 5770 and 460 fall in a similar value bracket for FPS/$. The bonus for the 460 being that the minimum frames are usually a tad higher. So it's ok to grab a 5770, just make sure it's under $140.

I'm actually trying to sell a new in box eVGA GTX 460 right now. :lol
$180 shipped

Ok everyone...well a few weeks ago I made a post about building a rig for a friend of mine after he checked out my rig. His plan was to spend $3000.00, but with the advice of many here, we reduced alot of stuff. We have most of the parts ready to go, but I need help on the Motherboard.

Here is what we have so far.

CoreI7 960 *The one that just went down in price to $300.00
1000w Corsair Power Supply
1 EVGA 480
1 EVGA 460 (for Physx)
6 Gigs of RibSaw Memory *Which may change depending if we get a mobo that is dual or tri channel*
Antec 900 case
Thermal Paste
Samsung 1TB HDD
ASUS DVD Drive

So...while he wanted off the start dual 480's with a 460, I showed him some of the posts here that said it was overkill for now..he also wanted one of those 1000 Extreme CPU's as well, but that was overkill. However, he wants to be able to expand if he wants, so that is why we got the 900 case, so everything he might want to addd in the future it will fit.

So with that in mind, we need a Mobo for this bad boy. Minimum would be something that can do Dual or Tri SLI, Room for the Physx card and something that is not going to compromise performance. I am leaning towards ASUS or EVGA in particular, so if anyone can recommend a good MOBO that fits the needs for this rig and what this guy wants out it potentially in the future.

Thanks again!

Does having a dedicated Physx card make that much of a diff? And wouldn't a 460 be overkill for that? Plus you're splitting the bandwidth by using your second PCI-E slot. I'd take that ~200 and buy an SSD instead.

But if you really want to drop some dime... Asus Ares?

I have a 480 and a 460 in my setup and it does make a difference to me. I would of got something smaller than a 460, but I already had it and it would of cost more to send it back to newegg (restocking fee/shipping fee).

So, what do you guys recommend for someone who doesn't want to build their own PC. I am just generally really bad with this kind of stuff.

I don't need a Crysis at max rig, but more of a general Gamig rig, mainly MMOs.

how can you be bad if you haven't tried? nonsense. although if you really are that scared you can try NCIX if you are in Canada or the USA.

I've read in this thread that one should wait to get a new gaming rig with the new tech coming in the next few months. How much of a performance gain will one see with the new tech? How much will current tech be discounted?

Right now I'm really just interested in Starcraft (and diablo II whenever that comes out), so current tech is more than good enough. I've been out of the PC market for a long time so I don't really know how much 3 or 4 months will affect the price.

Question for German-GAF. My old 8800GT kicked the bucket so I need to replace it... I just want a cheapo stopgap solution until I get a new rig sometime next year.

Any recommendations? I was thinking of getting another 8800 or a 9800 to tide me over, but I'm not sure which German hardware outlets (or online shops) come recommended.

Amazon.de offers some for ~80€.

I'm planning on selling my tv and buying an dell u2711...

Anything I should know? Compatibility-wise that is. Or can I just buy it and connect my 460 via hdmi ?

Yesterday I purchased an Asus 1Gb GTX460 from Newegg, and today it's deactivated? I wonder if there's anything wrong with the card...

Hmm. That's the card I'll get on Wednesday. I know they've been having trouble shipping enough quantities of it... Maybe they just decided it's just not worth it or maybe something else. I'll see if I can find any information regarding that.

If it's not a mistake by Newegg. I'll check if we don't have any information soon. Feels stupid to ask if it's just an error.

Check gh.de. Their hardware section is embedded on a bunch of sites like pcgameshardware.de and heise.de anyway.

What's the ideal pc monitor size for a desk?

I currently have a 24" and love it. My brother just went away to school and has left behind his 40" 1080p tv set. Should I even bother trying this in a desk environment?

I used to use a 720p 32 inch LCD as my main monitor for a while, it was kind of fun, but I don't know how I ever did that. When I bought a 40 inch 1080p set, I didn't even bother trying. I do have my 40 inch connected to my computer at all times though to play movies and console ports on.

ohgodwhatisthisiamnotgoodatcables.jpg

Sorry for the blurry.

newcase.jpg

Power supply on the bottom now, making things a little cleaner. Plus I got a SATA DVD drive -used to use a IDE.

newcase2.jpg

I've got a space for a door fan, might put one there, or just leave it open. The gfx card is venting there, so it should stat nice and cool.

Here's all the crap I bought:

So in my setup:

Last night I did the PSU paperclip trick and sure enough the PSU powered on, so that is ruled out. now it's either got to be the mobo or the processor... or maybe the case is messing with hit somehow because it's still not turning on.

is there a way to test the mobo or processor to check to see which could be the problem after i've ruled out the PSU?

so im getting a free gtx 460(2gb) what would be a good cheap build to go with it? and yes its nice having a hookup :lol
also other than the card all i got is a mouse and a 1680x1050 monitor

also im prolly not gonna build it till after the semester so sometime in dec/jan but id like to see what exactly i'll be looking at as far as pricing

id like some degree of futureproofing like so im guessing im gonna need a nice mobo and a beef psu so i can sli later if need be
im likin the i5 but id prolly save alot more with amd right?

Now you just need to get yourself a decent CPU cooler :)

You laugh, but I'll probably end up doing just that pretty soon. I'll just run over to Canada Computers to pick one up and... OH NO!

Is there an updated budget PC list? The list on the 1st page is a bit out of date and many of the parts are out of stock or discontinued. Looking to spend $400-600 USD using newegg or tigerdirect. Thanks!

I haven't been following your issue so if I'm asking a question you already answered I apologize. Does your system make any sounds when you try to boot up? It's just a stab in the dark but when I built my machine I only plugged in one of the 2 pci express power connectors into my graphics card and it wouldn't boot. It seems to be a semi common mistake.

I can tell you what I bought. It was around $650 (before rebates), and hopefully it'll last me a good while.

Good Store... Bad Cashier‎‎

Can't stand that short asian girl with the glasses at the cash . She has quite the attitude, rude and cynical. She is the main reason I stop shopping there. I use to make all my computer purchases there....but no more.‎

Good company, bad store‎‎
By dfiguero - 18 Feb 2010
Like all other reviewers I had the worst experience in this store! The employees are all talking to each other, they have no manners or interest in selling, getting articles, etc. But definitively buy online!‎

Go online instead.‎‎
By dj - 5 Feb 2010
www.canadacomputers.com is a great website offering good products at probably the best prices in canada. However, this downtown outlet (I do not know about the other stores in GTA), has the worst service in the planet and the people working there are quite rude. And if you are unlucky enough to have got some parts that do not work (like me), best of luck in getting a quick response back in keeping with that retarded return policy they have (15% restocking fee) So, the best thing to do, is to go online to their website and order from there. Or go to http://www.newegg.ca/ whose prices are almost the same, but have a much nicer return policy.‎

Stay away from this store‎
By Keethees - 11 Mar 2009
Canada Computers is a good company, but you are better off either purchasing online, or at any other Canada Computers location. Stay away from this place! Kids who work there don't understand anything, and the manager is a jerk

http://maps.google.ca/maps?um=1&ie=...ocal_result&ct=image&resnum=2&ved=0CDAQnwIwAQ

I want to go in there just to see if they'll be rude to me, then show what their rating on Google maps looks like. You know, after they rebuild I mean.

Micro Center has me tempted to not wait out for the next wave of stuff coming this Spring.

This

Intel i5-760 @ 2.80 GHz (MC, $170)
*Antec Three Hundred Illusion Black Steel Case Midtower
*Antec Earthwatts EA650 PSU (Newegg PSU+Case combo, $130-15 MIR)
Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB 7.2k RPM Hard Drive (MC, $60)
MSI P55-GD65 LGA 1156 P55 ATX Motherboard (MC, $150-40 MIR)
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2x2) DDR3 1333 RAM (Newegg, $90)
SPARKLE GeForce GTX 460 768MB GDDR5 (MC, $167)
ASUS DVDRW DRIVE (Newegg, $20)
Total = - $40 MIR - $15 MIR = $732

could pretty much run any and everything maxed (I game @ 1680x1050) for the foreseeable future.
