"I need a new PC!" 2010 Edition

Quick question. My browser seems to be playing .gifs at about half speed. Using google Chrome. Anyone else having this problem, and is there an easy fix?

My Antec 900 is such a mess too. I tried hard to clean it up but cant get past a lot of the clutter. Its still very airy but it can be airy-er if it had better wire management.

That Obsidian is nice. Too bad they dont make smaller/cheaper versions with similar capabilities. 300 bucks on a case is a little steep right now but Im definitely going to keep it in mind when the time to upgrade comes around.

I'm thinking about going ahead and seeing what can be done to re-wire the case, as well as dust it since it's such as mess. Does anyone have any methods for dusting computer cases? Is it easiest just to remove everything?

Well, don't forget that the Mobility HD5650 is nowhere near the power of the desktop HD5650, which in itself already is pretty meh. The Mobility HD5650 has around the same power as the desktop HD4650, i.e. not good at all (~30-50€ card).

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition
Asus HD 5850 1GB
Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P
Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ, 1TB
Cooler Master Silent Pro M500
Kingston ValueRAM KVR1333D3N9K2/4G
Antec 300

So I assembled this system today and it didn't boot with the 5850 in it. It gave a long continuous beep and the fans started running at full speed. Took it out out and the system booted up, and ideas?

Is it possible that the card just wasn't seated properly?

I usually take a can of compressed air, attach the plastic flexible tube onto the end of it, and just go to town blowing out every nook and cranny. Just be sure not to tilt the can in any way and always keep it upright or some of that really cold liquid stuff will blow out and burn you or kill your PC.

I'd pop out your video card and spray that off separately as it's probably pretty easy to remove as well as the more common item to be hurt by dust. Just take your time with the rest of it, there shouldn't be any need to take the whole thing apart (unless you want to be overly thorough).

That unfortunately is an issue with chrome that pops up sometimes. Use firefox if it really bugs you?

So I'm considering upgrading my agp card and/or ddr-400 ram. Why are they so expensive?? 1GB of ddr400 ram is like 30 dollars!! and an old ati 3850 is a hundred. I thought these things were supposed to go down in price!? All I want to do is play Counterstrike source and the next half life..

Snoodaard said:
Nope, put it in 4 times, but the card has 2 power connectors but it only came with one cable, does it need 2?

...you're going to need another cable, as both of the power connections do have to be attached.

Oh... damn, so I'm still stuck waiting for the Envy refresh or the rumoured Macbook Pro then :(

Hurm. I re-installed chrome, and It seems to be fixed for the most part. But like, 3% of .gif images will play at half speed now. *shrug* I can live with it.

I would recommend you just buy a brand new computer.

Most power supplies come with 2 by default. Most companies include one just in case, but there's a good chance you'll never use it unless you got trislifire.

Because you're running 7 year old hardware. DDR hasn't been manufactured for a very long time.

I don't remember if I ever posted in one of the new PC threads about my headphone problem, but I may have found a potential solution. My issue is that with a Gigabyte motherboard with onboard sound (I don't have the exact model numbers at hand), headphones plugged into the front jack would have a hum/whine, especially if it's a quiet scene, or if the CPU/GPU is being used heavily. Game menu screens and intro movies seemed to cause this to happen for some reason. Ingame it usually isn't as noticeable but that might be because other noise just drowns it out.

Anyway, I finally tried plugging into the back audio jack instead, and I couldn't hear any whine, so I think it must really just be some sort of shielding/crosstalk issue about the front panel connector. I need to get new headphones anyway, so I'll just try to get a longer cord.

Does anyone have suggestions about making a front panel better in this regard, though? Or does anyone have good suggestions about relatively inexpensive, yet decent headphones? I have a big head, want comfortable headphones that won't damage my hearing, but I don't really want to pay more than $30-50 right now. I'm a musician but not an ultra audiophile. I don't want overpowering bass or treble, just decent balanced sound.

Yep, you really need to build a new computer.:lol agp is so old.

Ok, I'm currently trying to connect my X-Fi Music to my Z-5500.
So I googled this stuff and I found some forum posts and apparently analog is better than optical for games?
Well, these posts are all from 2005 or something and war has changed and all...

Sooo I just want to ask if this is true and if I should even bother to try to hook it up with optical (I would need to buy an adapter).

Damn, that Corsair case is dead sexy. I love my Antec 902 as well, but my cable management positively STINKS. I mean, the airflow is good in there, but it doesn't look anything like that. It also sucks to still have an IDE drive in my Pioneer DVR116D burner. I can't justify changing it, as it's one of the best. Probably should buy one of those wound IDE cables for it instead of the legacy ribbons. Should have mentioned I have a IDE/SATA adapter, but it didn't work with the drive for some reason.

Anyone have suggestions for decent computer desks? Preferably under $150.

Also, does anyone have experience with tempered glass desks? I'm concerned that I might put too much weight on it and cause the glass to crack. Does that sort of thing happen or am I being paranoid?

Just buy whatever fits your budget. All you need is a something that can fit a keyboard, a big mouse pad, and a monitor (speakers are optional) on, with maybe some room left over. The desk I have now is huge as hell, and great for a work environment, but I have space issues with fitting my qck+ in a good position due to the height of the desk. I only use half of it because of it.

Yes, use the multichannel analog jacks. You'd have to use compressed audio otherwise.

Thanks.
Would I be able to get "real" 5.1 like DD or would I be stuck with ProLogic with the analog jacks?

probably a dumb question, but is there a way I can completely copy one hard drive onto another?

Basically, I want to get a good fast, large hard drive as the main drive for my computer. I just don't want to go through all the hassle of reinstalling windows etc etc to the second hard drive. Can I pretty much take everything from my C windows drive and put it onto the better one I get? (so it would be the C drive when it's installed)?

You need a disk cloning app, just copying over folders won't work for windows and most apps. Acronis true image, clonezilla, norton ghost are some options.

Newegg shipped my stuff already. Of course with my luck, everything is showing up Tuesday except the frickin' hard drive. :(

I have the exact same problem. My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H, but I think the issue isn't so much the motherboard but (like you said) the front panel connector. The cables from my front jacks used to run straight past my graphics card, so games would drive it crazy, but even after moving the cables to the other side of the mobo it still creates feedback.

I'm just running off the back panel right now, but if someone has a solution for getting the front panel working, I'd love to hear it as well.

I'm in the same boat. Using an Asus P6T deluxe v2. Sound directly from my mobo is crystal clear, but from the front audio jack is as poor as can be. There's a constant high pitched whine when I plug my headphones in that actually nauseates me if I listen to it for more than a couple minutes.

Yeah rohlfinator, Crunched and Blizzard I too have the exact same issue thinking it was the onboard sound that was causing the front panel buzzing and hissing (even moving windows and scrolling caused) After buying a sound card and hearing the problem still, I figured out it was the front USB connections causing the problem. I unplugged that cable and all the noises went away.

I think the cases have the USB ports too close to the headphone jack. I've tried attaching ferrite cores to the front audio cable at both ends, and separating the cable, but still no solution.

I'm open to try something else because having those front USB ports is kinda handy.

Ok GAF I need your help once again. I am trying to help my friend build his own PC. He has a budget of $800 for a PC and monitor. Can anyone post a build under $800 that includes a monitor?

So I'm about to put together a computer for a friend and am currently debating between a Core i5 750 and a Core i7 860. The price for the 750 is substantially less than the 860 and from a few of the benchmarks I have seen there doesn't appear to much of a difference in performance. Is there something I am missing, or is the i5 750 generally regarded as the better option for cost performance?

Also, I really like my Gigabyte motherboard for my current computer (Core 2 Duo). How are their LGA1156 motherboards? I see a lot of people recommending Asus in this thread, but are they generally considered to be better?

No offense, but wasn't that a sub-$100 card when it came out almost 3 years ago?

I5 750 is probably the best bang for buck processor on the market at the moment. The overclocks you can get from it are so good it really isn't even worth buying the other shit unless you got the cash to spare.

Gigabyte is alright, I'm personally an MSI person. I've had a 939 MSI board, and it was a top board at the time, and now I own a P55-GD65 board. It's not the best MSI board out, but the results on the board are good enough to save that extra cash. The Gigabyte GA-PA P55 UD2 is a pretty solid board from what I hear, so you might want to look up some reviews on it.

So I am on my way back from a snowboarding trip and can't wait to get back on my new PC

I just have a question. Any good sites with good deals on PC games. I know I missed out on all te great steam sales but I am broke for a few days and want some stuff to try out.

I really want to get dawn of war II and crysis(just to see how it is and hopefully check out that new MW mod. Would also like to get world in conflict.

As posted above, DoW2 is $20 on D2D right now which is the same price it was on Steam during the sale. Since it is a Steamworks game, you can add the CD Key to Steam and it will function like a Steam game.

so, just to get it straight:

I have both hard drives in my computer, then I use one of those programs to clone/copy/transfer it. After that I remove the original C drive, hook up the new one, and when I boot up everything will work?

Right now I've got an e8400 and an 4870 512MB in my computer and I'm looking to upgrade. I don't want to upgrade the processor since I'll probably build a new system sometime later this year.

I was thinking of upgrading the video card to a 5870, but how noticeable will the performance gain be in games?

I'm putting together a new PC with a budget of roughly $800. Here's the parts I've picked out thus far -

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128412 - mobo
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231277 - ram
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115215 - cpu
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102857 - gpu
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153114 - psu

This all comes to 703.95 in my cart (GPU and PSU are on a combo deal as is ram and cpu). The DVD drive/HDD can come later. What I am looking for are 2 things -

1. Does anyone have some good case recommendations? It needs to have 2 front USB ports and a front headphone/mic port if possible while still staying within my $800 budget. Mid tower is the only way to go.

2. After all is said and done, I plan to keep the stock cooler on the CPU with no additional fans or bells and whistles inside the case beyond what it comes with. Is this a mistake and should I really get something to keep the system cool? From what I've read, the CPU can be OC'd with the stock cooler and still get some pretty good results, is it really worth it?

Benchmarks would seem to indicate 50-80% performance increase.

Speaking of P55 motherboards which of these three gigabyte boards would be the best value for overclocking + single-card set-up

Gigabyte P55A-UD3 $153 AUD
Gigabyte P55A-UD3R $177 AUD
Gigabyte P55A-UD3P $191 AUD.

looking for advice on a amd processor. does the lack of L3 cache on many of the cheaper models really make that much real world difference when playing games?

i was going to go with this AMD Athlon II X4 630 Propus 2.8GHz
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103704

but maybe something like this would be better?
AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition Callisto 3.1GHz
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103680

higher speed and L3 cache vs. 2 more cores?

other suggestions in this general price range appreciated!
