Intel Core i7-930 2.8GHz LGA 1366 Quad-Core cpu
nvidia 8800GT
1tb hdd @ 7200rpms
And would it also be possible to o/c the processor with that psu?
I don't mind upgrading the psu at this point; I'm just curious.
It says it's at 60 Hz, which is the recommended setting, but the lines are still there. There's a setting called Phase which says it "allows you to remove any horizontal noise and clear or sharpen the image of characters." It sounds exactly like my problem but changing it doesn't do anything.Orellio said:Yeah, that is definitely related to the refresh rate. I had an old CRT monitor that would do the same thing when set to 50Hz. The setting is usually found under Advanced Display Settings from the desktop.
NorrenRadd said:I'll be building my new PC soon and I think I would like to use RAID 1 with two of my hard drives so that I can create some redundancy in my system.
I have 3x 250gb HDs and I plan to install Win7 on one of them and use the other two in RAID storage.
I thought I read somewhere that Raid1 doesn't guarantee data protection even if one drive still works. Is this the case?
Secondary question: If I already have data on one drive, can I then setup the Raid 0 and mirror the data to the 2nd drive (so I don't lose any data while setting up?) Or, do I need to completely empty drives to setup the array.
THANKS!

Extollere said:Looking at getting a new PC in the next month or two. If I can help it, I'd rather not build my own. I know pre-built machines are a little more expensive, but are any of them fairly good? Is Dell a good manufacturer, I see some good looking deals on their site, but are the machines trust worthy? What about pre-built Acer or Sony machines? I'm sitting on a 6 year old computer, and badly need an upgrade but don't want to bother with building it... (also since I'm inexperienced I'm sure I'll fuck something up :lol )
Cronox said:Hey guys, I've got a build for a friend here. He originally didn't want to go above $500, but my build is above $600 at the moment.
59.82 - Antec Three Hundred Gaming Case (should I switch it to the Cooler Master RC-310-BWN1-GP Elite 310 ATX case for $40?)
$75 - MSI Socket ATX Motherboard 770-G45
OR
$85 minus 10 MIR + tax - ASUS M4A77TD AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard
$100 - AMD Athlon II X4 630 95W AM3 2MB 2800MHz Retail
$139.99 - XFX Radeon HD 5750 1GB DDR5 PCIE Graphics Card HD575XZNFC
$75 - Western Digital 750 GB Caviar Black SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive WD7501AALS
After mail in rebates, these last two will be $162.83:
A-DATA Gaming Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
OCZ ModXStream Pro OCZ500MXSP 500W ATX12V V2.2 Power Supply
Total is about $613. I wanted components that are good (quad core, good ram), but also components that would be good investments (the antec case, power supply). Any suggestions for saving a few bucks while not crippling the computer?
I have DVD drives and extra 120mm fans already.
Milabrega said:Any help input on what parts I should be looking into/ordering to build a new PC?
My goal is to run Starcraft 2, and the upcoming Capcom PC games on medium settings while still being able to run a video recording program, and to play both on high when not running one. Only thing I'm set on right now is the 5770, its the right card at the right price everything else is flexible. Price wise I'd like to stay as close to $600 as possible but have no problem going over, just means less I'd have to spend on a new monitor. Cooler and quieter parts are preferred if it means a slight sacrifice in performance or future upgrade ability, though I'd still like the ablitity to upgrade in two years. Best place I'm looking for price savings is hard drive, I have plenty of externals so I have no need for a TB internal drive, and even 500gb would be excessive.
brain_stew said:You can get a 5770 for the same price as you're paying for that 5750 (after a $10 rebate anyway), its a huge leap in performance and highly recommended.
I'd take the Sonata 3 + Earthwatts 500w PSU bundle personally.

Edit: That's a slow 250GB platter HDD, stay away. You can get a 500GB platter (much faster) 1TB drive for $5 more:

SarBear said:So I need to give my boss a plan for two new items in our small business office:
1) He needs a new server. He's running some ancient shit with 32gb storage and the operating Windows Server 2000. Most of our current accounting software is not supporting this OS after this tax year. He wants Server 2003, but I think we'll run into the same effing problem a couple years from now. I'm pushing for Server 2008. We don't need something fancy, and storage at the MOST would be 500gb. Even then that's overkill.
evil solrac v3.0 said:well, it's best to get one high end card (the latest) like the 5870. if you truly want to SLi or crossfire just get the highest end cards.
KrispeKreme said:Go directly with Server 2008 R2 as that is the latest server code base, which is the same as Windows 7.
Server 2003 = XP
Server 2008 = Vista
Server 2008 R2 = 7
Mr_Brit said:Hi gaf, how does this look for a new build:
AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition 3.1GHz 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 Retail Boxed Processor @ £68.88
Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 770 Socket AM2+ 7.1 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard @ £59.08
Will use this to unlock the 550 to quad core and hopefully overclock to around 3.8GHz
OCZ 400W Stealth XStream PSU - 140mm Fan 1x PCI-E 4x SATA @ £24.99
Antec 300 Three Hundred Case @ £43.00
Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3 1TB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 32MB Cache @ £61.99
Graphics Card, 800MHz DDR2 RAM and optical drive will be salvaged from old PC.
How does this look for a budget oriented build?
Clipjoint said:That mobo is SB700. If you want to unlock the 550 to quad core, you need something different. At least SB710, or more likely SB750.
Yeah it's more about it being a better buy if you have a lower budget.btrboyev said:I haven't been paying much attention to cpu's lately. I know all about the intel line, but it looks like a lot of folks are going the AMD route again. Have they caught up to intel? I know they still have the price/performance ratio.
I NEED SCISSORS said:GAF, my friend needs your help. His PC will not turn on at all. No signs of life from any component. I thought it was probably a dead PSU (it is a cheap brand after all). Would I be correct in my guess?
Milabrega said:Is there an i5-750 build of comparable price?
Kodiak said:I would also like to know this.
Milabrega said:So I've nailed my build down to the following:
Motherboard:
GIGABYTE GA-770TA-UD3
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128419&Tpk=Gigabyte GA-770TA-UD3
$95
Cpu:
X4 635
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103702&Tpk=x4 635
$119
GPU:
5770
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131330&cm_re=5770-_-14-131-330-_-Product
$149 (10 rebate)
Hard Drive:
WD 640GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136218
$70
Memory:
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231277
$105
DD:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118030
$23
Brings me to $561 without a Tower or PSU. That $100 combo from two pages ago looked alright, but I didn't like all the static problems reported with it. Anyone have any other recommendations, preferably under $100.
Everything here go well together? Any additional parts/pieces will I need to get (other than the tower and PSU) to put this all together? Wires I may need that don't come with the parts or something?
Is there an i5-750 build of comparable price?
brain_stew said:Don't buy the 635 its completely shitty value. You're paying 20% more for less than a 5% increase in performance, and its an increase in performance that can be had with 5 minutes BIOS tweaking.
TouchMyBox said:Looks good to me. A core i5 would probably bump up the price a good $100-$150 minimum unless you can jump in on that deal posted earlier in this thread.
