"I need a new PC!" 2010 Edition

TheMissingNin said:
Good evening gentlemen. I was looking for some advice.

I'm needing a new PC - Budget about £1000 MAX.

The thing is that I've got it into my head that I should probably put it together myself, I know enough to upgrade a PC - but I'm crap when it comes to actually choosing components. Though I have been Eyeing up either of these systems:

"Chillblast Fusion Reactor" (with a couple of modifications here and there) => http://www.chillblast.com/pconf.php?productid=19426

or

Mesh XGS i7 930 => http://www.meshcomputers.com/Default.aspx?PAGE=PRODUCTVIEWPAGE&USG=PRODUCT&ENT=PRODUCT&KEY=794312

OR

I could just build it myself and save some cash for other stuff. I've been trying to put a list together for the past couple of days, but there's no-one I know who could keep me on the right track apart from you amazing Gentlemen. So here's what I've got so far (I think these parts go together, but I'm not 100%):

And I've got a list of additional questions:
Is there anything I'll need that I missed? (I mean anything - I don't want to fuck this up)
Is there any good instructional videos or what online for general PC Building?
What should I do for cooling my PC? - specifically for the Processor.
Is there anything there that's too expensive for it's own good?

I realise I probably just blew some people's mind with what I'm asking here, but you guys seem like some pro dudes when it comes to this, and I'd really like to put it together before the epic summer of PC gaming begins.

i feel like a high shill for repeatedly linking this site, but their pre-built prices really aren't that far from what you could build yourself:

Wow-Wee! That's pretty darn good. There's an £800 build that's pretty much what I'm after - with the extra cash it might give me room to customise a bit further.

Have you had any experience dealing with these dudes in the past?

no, can't vouch for them past the prices. probably worth googling their name some.

I know of at least one GAFer that's used them and he had a decent experience apart from one issue; they tend to ship their configs with shitty PSUs. So make sure you spend a little extra to get a better PSU.

Googled them and it seems to be somewhat mixed reviews - or just a very vocal minority. Is there anyone you have dealt with that you or anyone can vouch for? I'm liking the DinoPC but I'd like a couple more suggestions if you can.

Yeah, I did notice that - though they do list a PSU similar to the one I was thinking about in my initial post (650W Corsair TX Ultra-Quiet)

For clarity, this is the build that caught my eye: http://www.dinopc.com/shop/pc/configurePrd.asp?idproduct=768

HAHA! Epic luls - I guess the gods of Gaf Approve :lol :lol :lol

My experience with Dinopc.com was at best frustrating. They Shipped 2 days late after i paid for 2 day delivery, i went to customer service about it and found out that they didn't have the cooler i ordered and it wouldn't be in for 2 weeks. They didn't tell me this was happening, i bet if i had not said anything they wouldn't have said a word. They then offered me an alternative fan which was half the price and i had to nag them for a refund on the difference. I now have my new computer and the CPU temps are astronomically high, I'm currently waiting to speak to their tech support because i may void warranty if i check it out myself.

So yeah, if my experience is anything to go by Dinopc's mother was killed by a CPU fan.

I've just decided to build my own computer(after watching some videos, i think i can do it lol) so i need some help to decide what i should buy(and where).
Budget: €1000 + EU
Italy, i need an online retailer that ships in my country without paying too much
Main Use: Gaming, internet & general usage
Monitor Resolution: Probably 1080p, i'm not exactly sure since i've not yet decided which monitor to buy.
List SPECIFIC games that you MUST be able to play: Valve Games, Crysis at a decent framerate, other new stuff :D

Hmm, seems like I can get one of these two setups:

Setup 1

AMD Athlon II X4 635 Propus 2.9GHz Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Model ADX635WFGIBOX

A-DATA Gaming Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model AX3U1600GB2G9-2G

And an open box Biostar AM3 MB for ~$50.

Total ~ $250

orrrrr......

Setup 2

AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Deneb 3.0GHz Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Processor Model HDZ940XCGIBOX

A AM2+/AM3 MB for up to $80.

And hang with my 3GB DDR2.

Total ~ $200.

Any opinions on what I should do? I have an overclocked Radeon 4830 that I'm going to keep. The $50 from the second setup could go to a nice fan, given I want a decent o/c.

Sorry to bump but did anyone have any thoughts on DDR3 vs DDR2 performance here?
thanks

Very very little, don't bother spending any more money on memory than you have to. Grab the CPU with the L3 cache.

Has anyone here ever owned a Sager laptop? By the end of the month I'll probably buy either a Dell or a Sager but I wanted to know if Sager was known for good build quality and reputation.

Stupid question to ask a bunch of PC gamers I know, but in my case do you really think it's worth building my own PC when I can get a Dell XPS 9000 with the same specs at the same price?

What is the benefit of building my own when I don't save any money? I used the suggestion here. http://techreport.com/articles.x/18747/6

Yes I probably get a crappy mobo. No chance for crossfiring or whatever, etc. But can you of the superior gaming race seriously convince me that it's worth the extra hassle of making my own when I'm not saving any money?
The extra hassle is an hour of your time if everything goes correctly.
I'm also guessing you will get the computer faster, have better sound, a better power supply, and overall better components.

If anything goes wrong you have the ability to replace it quickly.
I've seen DELL deals where they slightly beat the price of putting it together yourself but I still wouldn't buy a premade.

If everything is an inconvenience to you, just go ahead and buy the DELL.

An Accelero S1 cooler for your 4770 will do wonders, any $40 heatsink will do fine for your CPU as well.

Not yet, I didn't know I needed to get one (thought it came with one :( ). Is 2 better?
2 is better but only slightly, after 70CFM it tapers off very very quickly. I did some testing with dual 130CFM fans on a TRUE 120 for kicks, temps only went down another 2C. Just stick a single good 120mm fan on it and you are fine.

Help me choose a new monitor. I'm going to buy a new desk so I can watch TV while using my computer. 1360x768 is getting stale for me, and a 26" screen is too big for being a monitor, especially with a low res like that. My video card is a GTS 250, so I'm not sure which res to shoot for. Don't really want to go over $200 either, but I am flexible if there is an AMAZING deal
Nothing off the top of my head but the 22-24" TN panels on newegg (Acer and Samsung mainly) hover around $130-$180 and are good values.

I updated my drivers and certain files aren't playing with WMP anymore. I keep getting error messages. Anybody know where to get the codecs to play them? Or why the hell that happened? Microsoft.com would be like the best source obviously but it's the exact opposite actually. Everything was working fine before I updated these drivers.

Edit=ATI drivers by the way.
The Combined Community Codec Pack is a great codec pack

Thanks a lot (gotta start thinking of a new PC FFXIV capable, eheh).

Eyeing a new GPU since the last one had an... accident.

GigaByte GeForce GTX 285 1 GB vs MSI Radeon HD 5850 OC 1 GB

The Geforce is 50€ cheaper so propably gonna get it. Any thoughts?

Bought an Asus eee PC 1005PE and got it yesterday. I'm pretty happy with it sofar, but I have a question:

The netbook was advertised as having a 250GB, but I have ~222GB availiable and split into 2 local disks, C: and D: Is that how it's supposed to be?

What should I buy if I eventually decided to upgrade the RAM, doesn't seem clear to me

In adverts 1GB = 1000MB = 1000000KB = 1000000000Bytes, in reality (Windows) 1GB = 1024MB = 1048576KB = 1073741824bytes.
In short they lied to you, but as everyone everywhere has always done so, it's assumed you know this.

how decent a PC can you put together (ideally prebuilt) for £500? If not prebuilt, then needs to all be on one receipt as its a work bonus thing.

Doesn't need to game but would need to be a good day to day computer with gaming as a bonus. I already have a 22" 1680x1050 monitor which I'd reuse and I have a keyboard/mouse, so it'd just be the base unit.

Thanks Hazaro -- helpful as always.

You wouldn't happen to know what size of fan is used in the HDD bay of an Antec 900 would you? I have this open spot for a fan and wanted to buy two since I'm going to buy one for my case as well.

Also -- any good guides on OCing an i7 930?

Thanks for the advice. I had read similar reports around the web, but they were kinda old and I wanted to hear from real users.

I figure since I already have the memory, and I don't updrage often, AM2+ was the way to go.

Is it possible for my mouse to cause stutter during gameplay and I think my usb ports are slow. What can I do to fix this problem(upgrades etc)?

I just wanted to know if anyone here has ever owned a Sager laptop and can vouch for their quality.

I had a Sager gaming laptop about 4-5 years ago. The thing was massive, and got hot as hell, but I think that came with the territory. I had no issues with build quality or configuration.

So I ended up buying:

Open Box: BIOSTAR TA790GXE 128M AM2+/AM3 AMD 790GX HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard - $56.99
AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Deneb 3.0GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Processor - $125.99

...and got a $20 gift card thrown in.

$182.98 - $20 = $162.98.

Not too shabby. Really needed that MB/CPU upgrade.

Now my system looks like this:

AMD Phenom II X4 940 3.0GHz
BIOSTAR TA790GXE 790GX HDMI ATX Motherboard
3GB DDR2 800MHz Ram
2x Sapphire Radeon 4830 512mb in Crossfire

Should be enough to last me another year before I'll need to move that video card out for something more beefy. Hopefully that CPU (after overclocking it) lasts me another couple years.

Throughly low-mid range, but adequate for my needs. Thanks for the help all!

Doubt your mouse can cause stuttering in games. Unless you meant that your mouse is stuttering which is usually caused due to wireless receiver not being close enough.

Thing is, my mouse is right next to the desktop, it's really annoying and I've tried a wire mouse with the same result. I think it's the usb, I just need a solution.

Thank you for your advice, I've been checking info on the Accelero S1 and the 4770 since. There has been conflicting information concerning it's fit on that card since it's not on the compatibility list for the Accelero S1 R2. It appears that the Accelero L2 Pro is compatible, and I might give that a shot. I actually contemplated a decent GTS 250 since the performance is slightly better with a decrease in noise. But that may be silly, given what I already have and what I would pay for a new card.

Sweet, just scored another 4830 512mb off of ebay for $49. Now I can try out crossfire. :D

This should turn out to be a nice little updrade for the money.

Have that. Still doesn't work. I also have the shark one and some others. This is uhh...stupid. It was working before updating all these drivers. I can't believe something like that would screw up my system.

Oh and I tried system restore like three times but I kept getting the bsod.

Installing codec packs is often a bad idea. Installing multiple codec packs is usually a bad idea. Try http://paul.glagla.free.fr/filmerit_en.htm it will allow you to be more specify which codecs you want for each file type.

Wow. I had no idea what I was doing the whole time with that. It found 3 wrong filters or something and deleted a whole bunch of things but now WMP seems to work with wmv like normal.

Thanks. :D

My bad. It looks like the mounting system is fine (since its the same spacing) but the actual cooler is too large to to where the die is positioned :lol
http://images.people.overclockers.ru/180440.jpg

I did some looking around and there's nothing really out there in that price range (The S1 is an amazing cooler that beats many other $50 HS's) for the 4770. It's a bummer but the L2 Pro is probably your best bet unless you want to spend $60.

So I have heard many times on the internet to just install CCCP and get it over with.
What exactly does this do? I've never seen it recommended.

I've never had to install a codec pack, simply don't trust them. I have 100s of games, and have played countless video files of all sorts.

I just use Media Player Classic HC and VLC Player. Both come with every codec you could want built in to the player.

CCCP comes with MPC so that could be a reason.

I will vouch. If you're looking at the NP8760 or NP8690, they're the best built gaming notebooks available.

Thanks for the advice GAF.

Ended up going with Alienware.

Alienware Aurora Desktop
Intel Core i7 920 QC (2.66GHz, 8MB Cache)
6GB Triple Channel 1333Mhz DDR3
Single ATI Radeon HD 5870, 1GB GDDR5
500GB - SATA-II 3Gb/s 7200RPM, 16MB Cache HDD
Cosmic Black, Alienware Aurora Chassis, 875W PSU
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English
Single Drive: Blu-ray Disc (BD) Combo (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD)

Best thing? Got it for 20% off so I avoided the Alienware mark-up. Had a 10% discount and somehow when I spoke to the salesperson on the phone she thought I had asked for an additional 10% on top of that. When she asked if I was asking for an additional 10%, I almost said no because I didn't :lol . I just said...whatever you could do would be great. :D Lesson learned: it NEVER hurts to ask (or,in fact, don't ask at all and just have people misinterpret what you're saying)!

Brand new and custom-made. Total Price: $1420 (tax & shipping incl.).

Now I just need a paper bag to cover the Alienware case. A little over the top for my tastes but I couldn't say no with that discount. The Aurora isn't as gaudy as some of the others though. The site advertises, "Up to 160 thousand possible system lighting combinations with AlienFX". I hope one of those combinations is: COMPLETELY OFF!

Should I go with i5 or i7? 8 way hyperthreading sounds hot. I'm upgrading mainly for gaming. I guess you should know that I have a gtx 280.

Do you have your chip overclocked? The Q6600 running 3.4-3.6 Ghz is still quite fast and it's not really worth upgrading at this point. As a fellow Q6600 user I'd recommend waiting longer to upgrade as the slight performance increase won't be worth the large cost.

Oh okay cool, yeah I don't have it overclocked. I should look up a guide to see how to make that happen.

What's a nice upgrade from a HD4850? I don't really know how much I want to spend.

This may help. They recommend going 3 tiers up from your current card, which in your case would be a 5870 and above. I can say from personal experience upgrading from a 4850 to anything less than a 5870 won't be a great upgrade, especially if you've got a 1GB 4850.

Hey guys, I'm looking for a laptop that will be able to play games like Mass Effect 2, Borderlands, and Team Fortress 2 at a decent framerate (30 FPS) for less than $1,000. What are my options, if there are any?

Hey guys... I'm back again. Had a good long think about it, and I'm not going to go with DinoPC. I think I will just build it myself afterall - It's something I feel as though I should learn to do, and I read over at Tom's Hardware's very reassuring general PC Building Guide and I'm pretty confident I can do it - Plus my Budget went up a little, so I've got a little "Danger Cash" if it all goes tits up.

Anyway here's what I'm thinking about:

So this won't blow up in my face right? If there's anything I'm really conscerned about here is if I've got the right Power Supply and CPU Cooling for the job. I'm pretty sure everything else is ok. The graphics card isn't set in stone - Definitely a 1GB 5850 though. I should probably get a wireless card too I can maybe canabalize the one from my current PC. All the links go to Ebuyer, but I will shop about before I buy.

I was also thinking about getting a new keyboard - specifically one of the new Microsoft Sidewinder X4's. (My current wireless board doesn't like it when I press the 'A' button sometimes - and I really do need to strafe left 100% of the time that I need to XD).

So any constructive critisism or welcome reassurance from the fine men of NeoGAF? My fingers are itching to pull the trigger on this.

My 8800 GTS died. I bought a 9600 DDR3 for 130 bucks and have 14 days to return it. Should I keep it or go for something better? I really don't want to spend over 150.

You can get a GTX 260 for $130 (At least I still think so) which is at least 60% faster.
ATi option is 5770.

I just wanted to post this link in here. It's a tutorial for overclocking an i7 and I found it to be the most useful guide, when I was overclocking my i7 930 last week. Some of the details are ASUS motherboard specific but the guide should be helpful for anyone trying to overclock an i7.

http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?board_id=1&model=P6T+Deluxe&id=20081220191040237&page=1&SLanguage=en-us

I only decided to do a modest overclock to 3.52 GHz but I have a feeling I could have gone much higher.

I also found that my 5850 is stable at 880/1190 at stock voltage. Is it normal to keep your GPU at stock speeds normally and only overclock it when your playing say, Crysis? That's how I've been handling it because the vast majority of the games I own run at a solid 60 fps with max settings; it doesn't seem necessary to bump it up. I was just curious if setting and resetting the clock speeds from time to time was a bad idea.
