"I need a new PC!" 2010 Edition

You bought the wrong memory, you need a triple channel set, not dual.
These are times when you're thankful GAF is around (thanks for pointing out the mistake I made). :)

Since it's still in pre-production I've changed it to:
Change to 6GB CORSAIR XMS3 TRI-DDR3 1600MHz (3 X 2GB) from 8GB SAMSUNG DDR3 DUAL-DDR3 1333MHz (4 X 2GB)

and saved £30.

Am I good to go now?

Guys,

My PC isn't booting for some reason. I'm pretty sure my PSU, GPU and motherboard work as it powers on and the case fans and GPU fan spin however my CPU fan doesn't spin. It's a stock hyper 212+ 4 pin fan and is connected to the 4pin CPU fan header, when I press the power button it starts to spin for a fraction of a second then stops. If I plug the fan into a three pin system fan header it blows at full speed when I press the power button but then I obviously have nothing inserted into the 4 pin cpu fan header. Why do you think it isn't working?

I'm likely to upgrade my monitors soon, and wanted some opinions/feedback on 3D gaming. Is it fun and/or valuable? How noticable and convincing is the effect? I'm willing to pay the premium for 120Hz monitors, but only if I have a sense of how effective it is.

Can the 3D effect be applied to anything besides games?

Last question: I'm mostly a competitive gamer. I presume the 3D effect is less than ideal for competitive gaming? Instead of real clan/competitive matches, what about pug games of TF2, for example?

I'm not up on the whole 3D thing, but I've been told 3D with TF2 prevents you from differentiating team colors.

So, I have an i7 920 setup that I got in November of 2009. I'm currently using a 4870 512MB. I might have a chance to upgrade in the near future so what should I be looking at? Is there anything in the $200-$250 range.

I just built a new PC but I know pretty much nothing about OCing ram. The ram is Kingston ValueRam DDR3 1333 and the default timings are 9 9 9 24. I set it to 8 8 8 24 per the recommendation of someone, but I'm not really sure if there's any benefit to that...

I know what I'm doing with the rest, but never really looked into OCing ram in the past. Any tips?

For the rest of the system it's:

GIGABYTE GA-870A-UD3 AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
CPU - AMD 955 Quad Core Black Edition 3.2 ghz (overclocked to 4 ghz)
MSI N250GTS TwinFrozr 1G OC GeForce GTS 250 1GB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 (overclocked already)
Hard drives - Primary is a Kingston 64 GB SSD
Secondary - 1 TB Sata II internal, 1 TB USB external, 500 GB USB external
Antec Neo Power 500 500W ATX12V
ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 64 Pro 92mm Ceramic CPU Cooler
Antec Three Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Monitor - Acer 23.6" monitor (2nd one coming with this pay check)

Performance boost is minuscule.
Timings more important than speed. Try to get 7, if not 8 is fine.

Whats the best program to use for benchmarking?

3dmark vantage?
Pcmark vantage?

3dmark 2006?

I just built a computer about 2 months ago and I needed a complete system for ~$800 including the monitor and dual monitor support.

I'm curious how you guys think I did;
This is what I bought:

Gigabyte Socket ATX Motherboard GA-770TA-UD3 - $101
AMD Athlon II X4 630 95W AM3 2MB 2800MHz Retail - $97
Seagate 1TB HDD - $50 (after $30 rebate)
Ultra 500W PSU - $40 (after $20 instant rebate)
Ultra LSP550 - $50
Cooler Master Mid Tower Case - $38
LG W2353V-PF 23" Monitor - $175
Logitech Wireless Kb/M - $35
OCZ DDR3 PC3 10666 1333 Mhz RAM (2x4GB) - $138
LITE-ON 24X DVD Writer - $28
ATi Radeon HD 5670 - $114

Total = $866

How did I do?

Unless Vantage is free now, 06 is what most use.
Really I wouldn't worry about it and just look at your game performance.

Not a good PSU (I think), and an iffy overpriced GPU.
Should run fine though.

What kind of CPU temps are you getting with that OC? I just installed my Arctic Freezer 64 onto my Phenom x4 955 and am getting about 58-60C after running Prime95 for about 10 minutes. Idle temps are about 34-37C. I was hoping to have lower load temps for some OC headroom.

Ok thanks man, I still get these hardlocks for no reason from time to time. Tonight its new driver time...

I used the Artic Cooling MX2 thermal compound along with this and I'm running at about 32C idle temps. After running it under stress testing for an hour it was running at about 54 - 56C.

This case is part of the reason for it. The fans are awesome, the PSU is on the bottom and it's got great air flow. I also have the PC in a basement rather then on the ground floor.

Thanks. It's hitting around 70-71°C so I think I should try and reapply the heatsink/thermal paste.

Which test were you running that got it up that high?

Also, on a none gaming related note.

My little brother needs to get a notebook for his architecture design studios next semester. He already has a more than powerful enough desktop, so he won't need to do any real heavy lifting with it. His price range is 4-600ish.

I assume that he'll be using basic design type software: Adobe suite stuff, Maya, Rhinoceros, Revit.

Would something like the ASUS Eee PC 1201N work out? Or should he look towards the lower end full sized notebooks like the dell inspiron 14r.

He doesn't want to spend too muchfor power he won't need, and he wants decent mobility.

4) Prospective laptop buyers please fill this out and ask their forum as well.

Not sure how many notebooks are ION + a non-Atom CPU.
I'd check to see how well ION runs that.

The HP mini 311 is nice, but that ASUS looks nice too. I'm sure there are many good ION+Atom netbooks out now.

Just wanted to chime in that I'm absolutely enjoying Starcraft2 singleplayer right now... <tear> I love PC gaming man... I love it so much...

I am in the market to build PC Gaming rig and I wanted you tech gurus out there to check what I have chosen and please recommend me a video card, $200 is my max on the card.

Case
PSU
Motherboard
CPU
RAM

Edit: Forgot to mention if the video card had HDMI out that would be huge plus.

Anyone here have an LED monitor. I'm in the market for a new monitor and was curious if it's worth the price. Upgrading from an ips panel so I kinda want better colors than a regular lcd tn panel. I assume the viewing angles are similar to tn?

So, I just played about a half hour of Crysis and Mass Effect 2 on this new rig. Not even a stutter with both maxed out on the graphics. I thought for sure that my graphics card would give me some slow downs on Crysis, but the game ran without a hitch.

Loving this setup so far.

Thoughts on THIS computer, anybody? I need a new rig for SCII, and I hear this is the best way to go if you're not looking to build your own.

My family buys Dells and they're generally happy with them. Personally, I'll never own a Dell again. Not so much because of anything they've done or not done, but just because I prefer picking my own hardware. Also, I save a decent chunk of money by not buying a brand name PC as well.

I used to be that way as well, but now I just don't care enough. Plus the two year warranty is a nice touch, since I've had so many things go out in the past. What do you think about the specs though? There's too many options out there these days.

Anyone have any experience with Newegg's open box deals on graphics card?

I bought an ATI open box graphics card years ago and it ran at 82C under load out of the box. I returned it, bought a Geforce and it ran 20C cooler and provided more power. Haven't looked at open box or ATI since.

My last PC was an HP and the build quality just wasn't there. The cases don't last the test of time and I was really disappointed with it. Thus, I went back to building my own.

As for the specs, it seems beefy enough. You shouldn't be disappointed with it. However, if you're going to get all of that then I highly advise you to get some SSD hard drives into a raid config. That's your biggest bottleneck right there and you'll see a significant performance gain if you go that route.

IMO one of the best pre-built deals on the market right now. If you aren't interested in building a desktop yourself this one should be near the top of your list.

Awesome. I think I might pull the trigger.

My advice for stuff like this (cause I'm an impulse buyer) is to sleep on it and if you still have a burning desire to buy it in the morning then go for it.

I need SCII in my life. If you guys are telling me it's a decent system, then I'm sure I'll be satisfied. Thanks all for the help.

gonna add dual crossfireX radeon 5970s and 12GB ram.

worth it?

What the hell are you going to use 12 GB of ram for? 4 GB or 8 GB max (still overkill) will serve your needs, even for heavy gaming.

Your biggest bottlenecks for gaming are the HDD, GPU and CPU. So long as those are top notch, 4 GB of DDR3 1333 or 1600 will be fine.

Just to point out the obvious, it does not come with a monitor so you'll need to have one already or buy one seperately.

Luckily I was able to figure that one out all by myself. (CRT for life)

thanks i don't really know these things lol. but is the price a good value for the product?

Kind of in a dilemma. I hooked up my Panasonic G10 to my computer via a DVI to HDMI connector, and anytime I tried to do something extensive (play a game), my computer would crash. I have an E8400 Wolfdale/ATi Radeon 4850 and I have the latest drivers and firmware already installed.

Fuck ATI. Their drivers still stuck. Go with a Geforce graphics card and get some custom optimized drivers. You won't regret it.

You could probably go up to the intel 960 if you want. It'd have a bit more longevity.

The harddrive will work, but I suggest hitting up newegg and getting a 32 or 64 GB SSD and making that your primary eventually.

I'm toting the SSD hard for anyone looking for a performance system because I just built mine with a 64 GB Kingston and the performance has been unreal. It's just so god damn zippy.

I don't tolerate fanboyism. Just because ATI doesn't release as many drivers as Nvidia doesn't mean their cards "suck."

I didn't say anything about their cards. It's their drivers that have always sucked. It doesn't even have anything to do with the frequency of releases.

Sure, ATI are perfectly usable. It's not like you're going to see massive drops in performance by going ATI over Nvidia for similar cards.

However, their drivers just can't compare to Nvidia's IMO.

ATI drivers are pretty solid now. This is my first ATI in a long time - were it not for the 4850 I owned for about two weeks it would be my first ATI since the Riva TNT days - and I don't really have any complaints about them.

Classic_Gs just had his delivered a few days ago. Try asking him for impressions. He seemed to like it but he might have more to say after fiddling with it for a while.

I'm thinking about building a home machine that I would run OS X on. Do any of you have experience on this? I was thinking a quad core i5 processor and then I don't know from there. Is there anywhere good I could check mobo/GPU compatibility?
