I´ve got a Cooler Master V8 on my X4 965BE and it´s GR8! Was able to oc to 3.8GHz using AMD Overdrive. Just need to get my hands on some extra Corsair XMS-2 sticks to run parallel mode (am now using 2x2GB XMS2 and 2x1GB Kingston).

I'm shopping for a laptop that needs to last me ~4 years of grad school with "downtime gaming" possible on it. No more than 15.5" dimensions (the smaller the better within reason), no more than 6.5 lbs. I'd like to be able to run Starcraft 2, Diablo 3 and Civ 5 on the thing without it breaking much of a sweat.
I have a budget of $1050.
Suggestions? My shopping for this thing has just involved a lot of blind stumbling at this point. I know enough about the desktop market, but don't really have a grasp on the finer points of laptops. Would quad cores run hot for a laptop? Obviously, a dedicated video card is gonna add unwanted heat to the whole equation. I don't even know how nVidia's naming process for their GPUs work. So I got the XFX 5870. My lat card was XFX and while it worked great, I was hoping that they learned how to make a quiet fan finally. Not so. If I were to return/exchange this 5870, anyone have any recommendations for ones that don't get so loud?

The didn't fulfill their obligation when they sent you a replacement card that wasn't fit to fulfill its purpose (no SLI finger). What country are you based in anyway. The EU has fantastic consumer laws so you can appeal on the basis of them but I don't know what your country's local consumer laws are like.

I mentioned before I won a EVGA P55 FTW from EVGA - well it showed up today and this thing is ridiculous - http://www.evga.com/articles/00502/ftw/. Let me ask you about the triple BIOS since I'll be new to OCing - would that allow me to set up two different setups - one for quiet daily operation and one for an OCing? I know one is there for recovery but it seems that it's also intended for that right?
I was planning on getting an i5 750 so I checked Microcenter yesterday and it was $160 and the 760 was $180. Checked again just now and the 760 is down to $170. I take it I should pick up the 760 if it stays at $10 more....what about a $20 difference?

Seems to be normal according to forum posts though. (Mine is also a refurb mobo I got for $100 due to their B-list sale)
Overall I'm pretty pleased with the setup, I do with the mobo booted faster though to really show off the SSD boot time. The entire system is faster though so it's a minor complaint.

Edit: It won't fit on the motherboard since all the 480s are dual slots and the third slot would be blocked since it's a double slot video card.

That numbers for the whole system, not the GPU. A proper 850W PSU will power SLI GTX 480s just fine. Don't use auto overclocking settings or Windows OCing tools. Only ever OC in the BIOS and set it manually.

See how the other PCI connectors are spacing between them so that the PCI-E x16 cards can physically take up two slots? Just be warned that you can't use any of those PCI slots like you might for a sound card or such since they'll be blocked by your card. I don't know if that card has all the features you want but that was the first one I saw with physical representation of how a board that supports 3 cards looks.

Finally diagnosed and fixed the problem with my new build. CPU is fine, GPU is fine... it all came down to a single bad stick of RAM. Swapped it out, problem gone!

I'm excited and nervous. I really hope it will let me do FF14 on max settings like everyone in beta said it does. Hopefully it doesn't come messed up anyway through the delivery process.

Now that everything seems to be working right I'd say the noise levels are pretty quiet. It sounds loud to me but I think that's because I'm so used to my whisper-quiet iMac
I haven't really put it to work hard yet, mostly just playing WoW and TF2. No complaints!

You could check and make sure both bridges have the words facing the same way on the cards, I don't know from experience but having one backwards might cause an issue.
Make sure you reboot after you have xfire ticked.
You may want to try clocking the cards to match as well. Since the top card will be running the hottest I'd put the 5770 in the top slot and the 5750 in the bottom.
You can now try to overclock the 5750 to it's highest setting, try for 860/1200 to match the stock 5770 at least for starters. If you can't do that just underclock the 5770 until you reach the same settings as your overclocked 5750.
If you get it working, you'll know.. oh, you'll know...

By the way, I just scored a Phenom II X4 965 BE (3.4GHz) for an old HDD, AthlonX2, and $75 to top off my 5770 xfire setup.

so what kind of upgrades would I need for 3D gaming? i have GTX 260 in SLi and a regular 24" inch monitor from dell (1920x1200 res) basically what I would like to be able to do is game at 60FPS in 3D on a bigger monitor (say 30 inch monitor)and resolution.
