"I need a new PC!" 2010 Edition

You're right. Read his post as him already owning a 460. Dual 470's would definitely be the way to go if he can swing the extra cash.

The 470 has turned out like the GTX 260 for me this generation. A really crappy deal at launch but heavy price cuts and excellent driver updates have made it a heck of a deal, especially for SLI.

5870 running fine with FFXI. Even runs FFXIV benchmark spectacularly.

Glad my case is huge. The card is enormous.
ATI representing.

The ATI 6000HD series will launch in late october but be available in november it seems.

Anybody have nVIDIA info?

The 470 got a price cut?!?

fuck, i only have a 520w corsair PSU, i think i'll be cutting it a little close there.

I´ve got a Cooler Master V8 on my X4 965BE and it´s GR8! Was able to oc to 3.8GHz using AMD Overdrive. Just need to get my hands on some extra Corsair XMS-2 sticks to run parallel mode (am now using 2x2GB XMS2 and 2x1GB Kingston).

1. Should I be able to use my 5770 for video and 8600GTS for PhysX (running on GA-790X-ud3P)?

2. I´m going to get a new HDD, but can´t seem to any any benchmarks for those:
Samsung SpinPoint F3EG Desktop Class HD203WI 2 TB
WD Caviar Green WD20EARS 2 TB
Seagate Barracuda LP ST32000542AS 2 TB
WD Caviar Green WD20EADS 2 TB

seems to me that EARS har 64MB and that would be the most logical choise?

Nah, that should be fine.

EVGA's card is $280 after rebate now with a lifetime warranty.

Or $270 for ASUSes version:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121372&cm_re=gtx_470-_-14-121-372-_-Product

Better deal than a GTX 460 now imo.

I'm shopping for a laptop that needs to last me ~4 years of grad school with "downtime gaming" possible on it. No more than 15.5" dimensions (the smaller the better within reason), no more than 6.5 lbs. I'd like to be able to run Starcraft 2, Diablo 3 and Civ 5 on the thing without it breaking much of a sweat.

I have a budget of $1050.

Suggestions? My shopping for this thing has just involved a lot of blind stumbling at this point. I know enough about the desktop market, but don't really have a grasp on the finer points of laptops. Would quad cores run hot for a laptop? Obviously, a dedicated video card is gonna add unwanted heat to the whole equation. I don't even know how nVidia's naming process for their GPUs work. It's all pretty shitty. I also don't want a laptop that's gonna look like shit, like alienwares or high end ASUS desktops replacement tanks.

Also, all you PC pros, tell me what you think of this one. It seems good to me, but I want you to tear this thing to shreds, tell me what sucks and what could be improved.

Alright, heres the build I have priced out (pricey, but I plan on using it for a while, much how I have my Mac Pro)

CPU : Intel Core i7-930 Bloomfield 2.8GHz
Motherboard : EVGA E758-A1 3-Way SLI (x16/x16/x8) LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX
CPU Cooler : COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus
Memory : CORSAIR XMS3 6GB (3 x 2GB)
Graphics : EVGA GTX 470 (2, in SLI)
Power Supply : CORSAIR CMPSU-850TX 850W

Havent listed harddrives or case since Im still figuring out what Im doing with those. Anything that people would recommend to swap out and change around?

hey brainy, how accurate/conclusive are errors gotten in OCCTs GPUtest? I'm asking this because the store contacted me and told me if I send my card in for testing and it turns out its not broken they're gonna charge my ass off

So I got the XFX 5870. My lat card was XFX and while it worked great, I was hoping that they learned how to make a quiet fan finally. Not so. If I were to return/exchange this 5870, anyone have any recommendations for ones that don't get so loud?

No working card should ever throw up errors in any program.

You need to insist on a return because they sent you the wrong product though, it doesn't even matter if its faulty. The didn't fulfill their obligation when they sent you a replacement card that wasn't fit to fulfill its purpose (no SLI finger). What country are you based in anyway. The EU has fantastic consumer laws so you can appeal on the basis of them but I don't know what your country's local consumer laws are like.

My sapphire 5850 was pretty quiet by my standards until I OCed and raised the speeds.

Hi Neogaf,

I'm buying a new laptop. Can someone recommend to me what sort of video card I need to look for in a laptop that can run Starcraft 2 at a good framerate on low (or even medium, if its not too expensive)?

Or just recommend me a laptop in general?

Currently building some test builds (not going to actually buy till around September) - this is a preliminary unit I've built so far.

Link

$742 including 50 dollars assembly fee (honestly, I'd rather pay that than have to do another assembly).

Note: This is pretty much the build Brain Stew recommended for FFXIV.

So my PC finally died(Motherboard) and I'm looking for a new pc. Considering that ive had it since 2004, nothing on it is really salvageable aside from maybe the optical drive. I dont kno to much about PC's and am a bit overwhelmed by all this so any help with this would be great. I've been lurking this thread for the last couple days trying to figure you what I should consider.

Im looking for something that will be able to handle most games on high. I know the nature of PC gaming is steady upgrading but im hoping for something i wont need to break the bank to upgrade 2 years down the line. My price range is about 1400-1600 Canadian before taxes.

I'm not sure wtf im doing but this is what i was thinking of going with:

Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB SATA2 7200RPM 32MB Cache 3.5IN

ASUS P6T X58 ATX LGA1366 DDR3 3PCI-E16 PCI-E1 2PCI CrossFire SLI SATA2 GBLAN Motherboard

Intel Core i7 930 Quad Core Processor LGA1366 2.8GHZ 8MB L3 Cache 130W 45NM Retail Box

Corsair TX750W 750W ATX 12V 60A 24PIN ATX Power Supply Active PFC 140MM Fan

GeForce GTX 460 Fermi Cyclone OC 725MHZ 1024MB GDDR5 (Im thinking if i need to upgrade Ill just buy a second one and SLI them up)

Dont really know about RAM, SSD's or what kind of case is best for cooling and all that jazz. Same with cpu cooling. If im missing anything please let me know

I hope that wasn't to long. Let me know what yall think and anythings i should change. Hell if you want just recommend something else altogether since anyone willing to help prolly knows way more than I do.

Thanks in advance PC-Gaf.

Keep the 750W if you might SLi later.
Another SSD to add is the Western Digital Blue 128GB

i5/i7 is faster now, but a solid x4 or x6 AM3 will give you upgrade possibilities in 2 years without the need for a new mobo (and new OS install).

http://i.imgur.com/A55hA.jpg

ok so I am a little confused. I was looking around and i couldnt find a mobo that was both A3 and could do SLI. If anyone else wants to chime in please go ahead since i have no idea when/if Hazaro will see this.

So, is overclocking a core i7 920 easy? I'm just looking to do a nice easy overclock to 3.6 from 2.6. Not gonna need much more really, specially considering how insane the rest of my rig is gonna be.

I mentioned before I won a EVGA P55 FTW from EVGA - well it showed up today and this thing is ridiculous - http://www.evga.com/articles/00502/ftw/. Let me ask you about the triple BIOS since I'll be new to OCing - would that allow me to set up two different setups - one for quiet daily operation and one for an OCing? I know one is there for recovery but it seems that it's also intended for that right?

I was planning on getting an i5 750 so I checked Microcenter yesterday and it was $160 and the 760 was $180. Checked again just now and the 760 is down to $170. I take it I should pick up the 760 if it stays at $10 more....what about a $20 difference?

So far I just have the MB, Sonata III case and I just ordered two quiet Noctua 120mm fans. Now I just need money for the rest.

Dear GAF im going with the i5 760 in stead of the AMD 1055
so i have to choose between these 2 mobo's

which one is better

http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/256920/asrock-x58-extreme3.html#tab:info

http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/229791/asus-p6t.html#tab:info

they seem to both support up to 3 cards and both support ati and nvidia cards.

and i think i finally decided to go with 2 460's in stead of a 5870.
i wanted to go with the 480 now and maybe buy a second later but that thing eats power like a freaking beast. 840W on sli while the 5870 in cf only takes 580W

I have the exact same processor, mobo, and cooler, with an OCZ 600W PSU and a GTX 460, along with a Vertex 2 SSD and 1TB Samsung F3. Pretty much everything runs extremely well at good temps (CPU is a little high but I'm running it @ 3.6Ghz). The mobo is pretty slow to POST, and does a strange power off before rebooting. Seems to be normal according to forum posts though. (Mine is also a refurb mobo I got for $100 due to their B-list sale)

Overall I'm pretty pleased with the setup, I do with the mobo booted faster though to really show off the SSD boot time. The entire system is faster though so it's a minor complaint.

The fact that neither of those boards support the I5-760 might be a bit of a problem.

K, in need of urgent emergency assistance. Gonna be getting a lot of stuff soon for my 3d gaming, video editing super rig of doom. However, would an Asus p6t deluxe v2 support nvidia 480 in sli, and a 275gtx for physx? Or would it not fit?

btw listen i realy want a 480 but according to this benchmark
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/158?vs=162

it takes almost 490W single card on load.
is there anyway i can town that down cuz i only have a 850W power supply and i realy wanna put it in sli some day.

How would we know without saying a case or anything?

Edit: It won't fit on the motherboard since all the 480s are dual slots and the third slot would be blocked since it's a double slot video card.

Im not to sure about mobo that support such things, but im sure you can find a case that'll fit all those.

this should be able to fit them i think. Not 100% sure tho

Edit* My uneducated guess is yes it'll fit.

Sorry if i confused you but what i ment is your biggest hindrance will be the mobo supporting such a thing. I think me trying to help is only making it worse so I'll just stop.

is there a mobo that supports 2 5870 and and a 8800 or a 250.

since the other pc thread doesnt seem to get a lot of traffic i'll repost my question here.

"i fount this in the gamer approved laptop thread but i want to know if this laptop will be able to run most games if not all games http://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-AS...&n=541966&s=pc because its a lot of money and i dont want to buy something like this without a second opinion"

thanks to sapietwolf for pointing me to this laptop and thanks to whoever answers this :D

That numbers for the whole system, not the GPU. A proper 850W PSU will power SLI GTX 480s just fine. Don't use auto overclocking settings or Windows OCing tools. Only ever OC in the BIOS and set it manually.

Side note but the OCCT is very extreme more so then any other gpu stress testing program or game. Have you tried any others? how is it during games? and is this at stock settings? how old is the gpu?

O.k, so it this mobo wont fit all 3 in that setup. Is their a mobo that will fit all that comfortably?

I don't know off the top of my head. There may be some with better spacing but you'd have to kind of look through them to see. There pretty much as to be a some sort of slot between each of the PCI-E x16 connectors to be able to fit a dual slot card.

Edit: Here's an example of one that will fit 3 cards. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188039

See how the other PCI connectors are spacing between them so that the PCI-E x16 cards can physically take up two slots? Just be warned that you can't use any of those PCI slots like you might for a sound card or such since they'll be blocked by your card. I don't know if that card has all the features you want but that was the first one I saw with physical representation of how a board that supports 3 cards looks.

Finally diagnosed and fixed the problem with my new build. CPU is fine, GPU is fine... it all came down to a single bad stick of RAM. Swapped it out, problem gone!

or will a 850W be fine this is the one that im getting http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/160922/cooler-master-real-power-pro-m850.html#tab:info

if u think thats enough for oc'ing my i5 760 and having 480 in sli than im getting my 480 this week
im getting this one. http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/255279/point-of-view-geforce-gtx480-1536mb-ddr5.html

so what do u think just go for it..?
the gygabyte mobo and the 480 and that power supply

I just ordered the XPS7100 Dell today. :D

I'm excited and nervous. I really hope it will let me do FF14 on max settings like everyone in beta said it does. Hopefully it doesn't come messed up anyway through the delivery process.

August 31st is the estimated delivery. *crosses fingers*

brain_stew said:
With that budget/those concerns, you'll want an AM3 build and probably a 1055T. If you just switch out the X4 635 for the X6 in the standard $630 GAF build then you'll be off to a decent start. You can probably afford to switch to a nicer case, some G Skill RAM and maybe even a better AM3 motherboard while you're on.

May I please have a link to that build?

Nice man! Phase 3 has updated settings and the frame rate is no longer capped at 30. With my XPS 7100 I get between 45-60 outside of town on max settings.

Gary, what 5870 did you get and how would you rate its noise levels?

To the members here who've ordered from NCIX US, how are they compared to Newegg and Amazon, as far as timeliness, customer service and so on?

I've just built a system for a family member with an Antec 300 and now I'm considering switching it in favor of the "new" Fractal Design Define R3, now that it's available in North America. As far as I know, NCIX is the only official seller around these parts.

53537_1.jpg

http://www.ncixus.com/products/53537/DEFINE-R3-BLACK/Fractal Design/

It's listed as $104.26 - $9.48 until 8/18. At $94.78 I've VERY tempted to order, but assuming it's shipping from Canada, I can't imagine what that would run. Hopefully they've fixed the USB issue that the Define R2 had.

i posted a page or two ago asking if anyone knows a problem i seem to be having. I am running crossfire 5770+5750 right now. But as it stands i am not getting a performance increase from it. Does anyone know why this would be? My cpu is a x2 555 be at 3.9ghz

As I understand it crossfire will default to the slowest card. So, if you have xfire working it's basically running two 5750's although some reviews suggest that should be around a 5870 in performance so if your not seeing an increase then something is going wacky.

You could check and make sure both bridges have the words facing the same way on the cards, I don't know from experience but having one backwards might cause an issue.

Make sure you reboot after you have xfire ticked.

You may want to try clocking the cards to match as well. Since the top card will be running the hottest I'd put the 5770 in the top slot and the 5750 in the bottom.

You can now try to overclock the 5750 to it's highest setting, try for 860/1200 to match the stock 5770 at least for starters. If you can't do that just underclock the 5770 until you reach the same settings as your overclocked 5750.

If you get it working, you'll know.. oh, you'll know...:D

And welcome to the xfire club... and screw the haters and non-believers.

By the way, I just scored a Phenom II X4 965 BE (3.4GHz) for an old HDD, AthlonX2, and $75 to top off my 5770 xfire setup.

2.9ghz Quad core, 4GB DDR3, 1TB HDD, 600w modular PSU, 1GB GTX 460, 870 AMD motherboard for $650 after rebate I think that's utterly fantastic. Blazing fast and fantastic upgrade options for the future.

You can also get Starcraft 2 for $20 off if you buy those components as well.

Hazaro, could you do a wishlist link for this build (and check it over) I could never get them to work for me.

Thanks!

BTW, would you recommend to downgrade to a 4850 (512MB/1GB?) or 5770 1GB? (and 430W power supply I guess)
Reason I ask is because where I live this will probably cost me over $1000.

so what kind of upgrades would I need for 3D gaming? i have GTX 260 in SLi and a regular 24" inch monitor from dell (1920x1200 res) basically what I would like to be able to do is game at 60FPS in 3D on a bigger monitor (say 30 inch monitor)and resolution.
