If it's defective? Sure it could. Anything with capacitors can have capacitor whine. My logitech mouse (MX518) has a really high pitched whine if you get your ear close enough to the thing. Audio drivers have been the bane of the master race for decades anyway.

I'm confused. Did you install a different heat sink? If so, why? As long as the cooler is seated, it is unlikely that it is the cause of a problem like that.

Did you change anything else? Did you have to take the mobo out to install the new cooler (or to reapply thermal paste - whatever you were doing)? If so, did you get it installed back onto the standoffs properly?

No. The 212+ was already installed. I used the thermal paste that came with the heatsink a few months ago. My temps have not been what I have expected. So I got some Artic paste, cleaned the old stuff off, then put new paste on

Three of the "stand-offs" that bolt down onto the mobo screwed in tight. However, I noted one was kind of loose (the nut was spinning below it) Is this enough to cause the computer to turn off then immediately turn off?

Edit: Removed heatsink and tried again. Same exact immediate on and off. I hear a click and my case lights go on, then nothing.

So my hot CPU problem continued...

- I decided to check the temp in my Bios from now on, being that its displayed on the Bios home screen

- I started by taking a look at how close the heatsink is to the CPU, its actually pressing on it fine.

- Then I took the heatsink off and looking over the directions. It seemed that it is installed perfectly.

- I then decided to run the computer without the heatsink to see if there would be a difference in temp (someone in this thread said that some people ran computers without heatsinks). ...Lets just say as soon as I saw the temp in my bios I immediately shut the computer off.

- One thing I did notice is that my CPU is absolutely drenched in thermal degreaser.

do not run a cpu without a heatsink period, hopefully no damage was done D-:

Lol, oh God no. I said that some people run their CPU's without heatsink fans. Running it without a heatsink is a good way to burn it alive.

NO! What are you people doing? What is happening here? Do NOT boot a computer without a heatsink on the CPU.

If it had gone past more than 5 seconds I would have pulled the plug. I wanted to see if the heatsink was shorting to anything.

I am stumped. Anyone have an idea? It was working right before this occured just fine.

I'm going to clean the thermal paste off of my CPU and heatsink and apply a little bit.

Maybe that's the problem.

But what should I clean it with? A paper towel? A regular towel?

Also how likely is it that my CPU was damaged? It was like at 170C. Is there a way to tell?

This is the part that confused people:

In hindsight its obvious what you meant though.

Yeah, I can see how there could be some confusion there.

I should mention that going without a CPU fan isn't recommended. It's the last ditch effort of a guy living in a small apartment, that just has to shut that damned computer up. First it's running without a fan on the CPU heatsink. Then it's a fanless GPU. Then it's an SSD (because HDD's make a racket). Then it's fans controlled to just barely spin. It's kind of never ending once you try to go from "kind of quiet" to "quiet".

For what it's worth, I know no way of knowing if it's damaged or not, short of using it.

Also, clean your CPU with a lint free cloth (like a microfiber cloth). Paper towels aren't recommended.

Got the new PSU installed, unfortunately, it has coil whine *all of the time*. Will need to RMA to Seasonic after it starts bugging me enough. Don't notice it while gaming or listening to music, just when sitting around browsing with no headphones.

After:

I was sad to find out that XFX 5870 I bought from a buddy wasn't reference. Ended up giving away the second Zalman cooler. Would have looked much nicer if they matched.

Final specs, before I put a nail in this one.
Mobo - ASUS Crosshair IV
RAM - 4GB Crucial Smart Ballistix Tracer
Proc - AMD 975 @ 4.1Ghz
Cooler - Thermalright Venemous X
Storage - 2xSpinpoint F3's in RAID0, Vertex 2 90GB
GPUs - XFX 5870, ASUS 5870 w/ Zalman VF300A cooler
Case - Corsair 600T White SE
PSU - Seasonic X750
Cables - Psychosleeve Unisleeved
Soundcard - ASUS Xonar DX
Fan Controller - Lamptron FC-5 V2

Now, on to my Lian Li X900 build. Time to get wet with Bulldozer.

Any benchmark recommendations?

Benchmarks for temps? You'd want to see anywhere from 35-40ish idle, and no more than 70c in Prime 95.

The_Inquisitor said:
Looks like my temperatures are about the same as before. That's good right considering my paste has had 0 time to cure.

Yep, assuming that they were fine before.

I think tomorrow is the day that my first PC gets built! I think some friends who have gone through this before are going to come over and help me. Any last-second advice/encouragement from the master race? What are the chances that one of my parts is faulty? What type of programs are y'all using to measure temperature and stuff like that?

I was referring to CPU benchmarks. To check to see if everythings A-ok.

Now anyway, how do I get my HDD on Raid 0?

I have yet to install them in Windows and well I don't know how to do that either.

any glaring issues with this build?

I wouldn't suggest the Antec 900. It's kind of a poorly designed case, and there are better options at that price range (Look into the HAF models. $10-$20 more for a lot less headache).

Check to make sure the RAM is 1.5v. Other than that, everything looks good.

Stick with Prime 95. If it can run that for hours on end, it is stable. Use CPU-Z to make sure it is actually running at the clock speed (and voltage) it is supposed to be.

Edit: Oh, and I have no idea about RAID 0. You'd have to read your bios manual. I'm actually researching it myself right now, after being gifted a couple of identical 320gb 7200RPM drives.

very nice. I just got some NZXT cables. I wasn't 100% happy with the quality, they did the job but I wouldn't recommend them.

I will look into psychosleeve for my next rig, these are nice;

So I installed RAID.

What I did was go on my Bios and set it to Raid.

I then assigned the two HDD to Raid0.

However I noticed that the computer kept freezing while booting to Windows, so I went back to set the computer up to ACHI.

When I went into the device manager the HDD was still in Raid.

However I can't see my new HDD on "My Computer".

What do I do?

Are they formatted? They won't show up in My Computer unless you've formatted them (unless the rules are different for RAID, and I'm just not aware).

Type "create and format" in the start menu search bar. Format them NTFS. Or, not them, but "it" since it would be a single drive.

I need another drink.

(Usually I'm sure of the advice I'm giving, but this time around, I really don't know. I haven't used RAID in years.)

Do I convert it to a Dynamic Disk or GPT Disk?

If you do raid in Bios = hardware control, you have to format and do a fresh install of Windows.

If you let Windows = software control raid, goto Windows Disk Management add drives and make it raid.

The hardware raid generally offers better performance, while the Windows raid allows you to add new drives without reinstalling Windows.

These aren't two drives aren't the hard-drive I have Windows installed to.

In that case, changing from ACHI to IDE/Raid and vice versa requires a registry change, google. Otherwise, you will have problem booting Windows.

Another question. How good are those compact water cool CPU coolers that Corsair makes? I am currently using a 212+, but i'm looking down the road for my 2nd year refresh next summer.

Again though, I'm not an expert in RAID, so take that with a grain of salt.

I asked a RAID question yesterday and no one answered, so I'm guessing there aren't a whole lot of RAID users left (since SSD's are so much faster, with less work).

This is what I see.

Do I select both or only Drive 0?

I'm so confused.

So what should I be doing? Step by step format.

Not much better. More for quiet operation. You can do better if you go with larger heatsink and quieter fan(s).

Does look at lot cleaner though. So the radiator just sits outside the computer, or does his sit up where the DVD bays are?

Damn, the other paste that came with the 212 was either garbage, or I did not apply properly. Even watching a 720p video in VLC, my highest core temp is up 2C.

If you really want to get one of those, get the Antec Kuhler 920.

I'm so confused.

So what should I be doing? Step by step format.

It should be as simple as formatting Disk 0 (do not format Disk 1). It should then show up as usable storage. Actually, looking at that, I don't think you need to do dynamic. Just format it NTFS as a basic drive. Hopefully I'm right about that.

If what Knitoe said is true though, you may have problems booting Windows after doing it. I have absolutely no idea if that is true.

I really need to read up more on RAID, before I think about doing it for my BF3 rig.

The_Inquisitor said:
Interesting. So it looks like in a review I saw you mount the entire thing to the inside back outlet of your case.

I think it depends on your case and where the exhaust is.

True. I do have to say my Thermaltake A90 case is starting to get cramped. >.< I think it's time to move up to the big leagues and get a full tower next build.

I have a full tower. My back still kind of hurts from the last time I had to move it.

Right click on the unallocated HDD and select format. Afterward, the drive can be use and seen in My Computer.

As for Raid, how many HDD do you have? I am only seeing 2 from your Disk Management screenshot.

Did it, restarted my computer, same thing it isn't there.

I have two, I just put them in raid on the BIOS first.

My new desk I am getting will be huge. No moving should (hopefully) be required.

But yeah, even though it's a little heavier, I can carry my A90 fairly easily around my house.

Have you RAID'd two 2tb drives together, for redundancy? If so, it does seem like they've shown up in Disk Management properly. But they don't seem to want to format, eh?

I figured it out. After formating the disk a had to create a "simple volume".

I guess it was just something where I had to create a volume letter to be recognized by "My Computer".
