@n0n44m, thanks for the BT-PS3 thing; I was hoping it'd be something that worked out of the box instead of having to install the motionjoy drivers anyway lol.

heh maybe for generic bluetooth USB controllers but not the ps3 controller :p

Hmm, I think I installed everything just fine o.O What temp would be "normal" for a system like that? Do you think a second fan for the scythe would be necessary?

That sounds about right really.

I have a Phenom II X4 940 @ 3.6 with a TRUE one push fan config and it runs at about 34-40 at idle since the idle temp is around 27 at the moment here.

voady said:
Ok thank you. Btw. what's your take on my temperatures

because Kyaw said, that my idle temps are relatively high (39-41(sometimes also 42)°C). My ambient temps are around 20-23°C. What do you think? Maybe I should add another fan on that mugen? Or is anything else wrong? I've read some reviews and the mugen 2 was around 37-38°C at about 20°C ambient temp. I am using the NZXT Phantom with all stock fans + 140mm silent wings front fan. But I only turn 2 of them in idle. I thought based on that, that my temps would be ok?
People worry too much about idle temps.
It depends a ton on your case airflow and where your case is in your room.

As long as load is under 70C for a prolonged period with a stress program you are fine.

Since your ambient is 25C, then your 39C idle is really a 35C idle on a 20C ambient test.

so other than the mx performance and the half-hearted recommendation of the sidewinder x8 are there any other people happily using a wireless mouse who would like to chime in?

totally understandable. i hate it too... but:
solar keyboard = no batteries :P
modern logitech mice (NOT the very specific gaming ones) = YEARS of battery life

got a G700

happy with it, although I sometimes forget it can be wireless ... then it eats through the battery in about 10 hours of gaming (with max sense/min battery preservation settings) but when you plug in the cable it becomes a normal wired mouse and recharges

but having used the mx518 before, it is not really a better mouse ... just more luxurious (and more expensive)

the wireless performance is great btw, I get just as much headshots in BC2 with or without the wire plugged in :p

(getting a different brand of battery might improve the battery life but every time I look for them I can only buy a 4pack for €20 :p and there is also a setting in the driver which supposedly lowers battery usage but I haven't bothered to check it out yet)

cool, thanks.

yeah, i just don't know about the battery. i looked at the g700 and it seems like a really nice mouse. but i don't know if i need the added precision and resolution over the performance mx. i don't do any competitive/online gaming and with the mx i'd be looking at years of battery life over the hours or days of the g700...

Thanks for the help on the graphics card. Going to be picking up that 560 Ti after work.

Got a question on cpu temps since you guys have been talking about it. My cpu idles at about 34-38C. Under load I don't know, maybe around 70-73C? I'll have to wait till I get my new card installed. Is that ok temps? I actually have an aftermarket cooler, I don't remember the name offhand, I'm at work. It is a big ass thing though with one fan on it. Is my temps ok right now considering the cooler I have? What is a safe high temp to be at under load?

Also, is there any point to ever having to put on/replace the thermal paste you've put on your cpu? Does that help with temp? Reason I'm asking is, I just really hope I don't have to, because this aftermarket cooler was a bitch and a half to install, and it looks even harder to take off. If I don't have to replace anything or whatnot, that would put my mind at ease.

Also, if those temps are fine, can I still overclock my cpu? I have this motherboard, and a Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0 Ghz. I just wanna know if I can squeeze anything else out of this cpu since it doesn't seem feasible to upgrade it considering my board.

I apologize for all the questions. I'm just excited :)

There's the Razer Mamba to consider as well. Not as happy as my old MX518 in terms of build quality (and drivers, though I much prefer using Windows default anyways), but the performance is great. I actually have trouble going back to the MX518 now because I really feel the angle snapping (which basically subtly smooths out movements into straight lines, diminishing precision).

The G700 probably doesn't have angle snapping though.

I ordered a MX518 for my new build, along with a 360 pad. It'll be my first gaming-type mouse so I'll see how it goes.

Don't think I'm really 'serious' enough to get an expensive gaming keyboard so went for a Cherry Stream XT. Never had a Cherry keyboard so, again, I'll see how it goes.

I'm happy with my choices, especially for the price.

sounds interesting

just looked into my drivers and there is a checkbox :o

"When Angle Snapping is enabled, the mouse will detect when you are trying to move the pointer in a straight line along the horizontal or vertical axis, and automatically “snap” the pointer to the horizontal or vertical axis for perfectly straight movement. "

I'll try it out later as I'm using Remote Desktop because the intake air according to my fancontroller software (and thus my roomtemp) is currently 32c and rising :( I've fled to the basement

edit: hmm there are more settings in the software I haven't used yet lol ... time for some tweaking tonight

the razer mamba is crazy expensive (at least here) but i might be able to check it out at the store later, see how it feels...

does anyone here actually use the saitek cyborg?

I use the RAT 7. Not sure if its the same mouse just wireless but its been great. Build quality is off the charts.

I've used all kinds of mice in my 20 years of pc gaming. The RAT 7 is the nicest, most solid mouse I have ever used. I've used the mx, and g series of mice as well as a razer nothing really compares in its customization and feel. Sure its all personal preference but for me I wouldn't use anything else.

I got a AMD 6770 for my htpc and started playing League of Legends on it. My PC is about 12 feet away from my comfy couch. I want to start using ventrillo; but, keep my 5.1 surround sound.

What is the best mic option? Should I use my ps3's bluetooth headset with a bluetooth adapter?

When are the next series of graphics cards scheduled to release? I'm trying to decide if I should upgrade my GPU now or wait until BF3 releases.

Thank you, quite a big jump in most cases. Think I will go for it while the 6850 is worth a decent amount! Hopefully a i5 2500 and GTX 560ti will keep me gaming for the next year or so without issue at 1080p.

Can anyone recommend an after market cooler for the GTX 560ti and a low profile, low noise CPU cooler that will fit a mITX motherboard and case? Even now it does get a bit loud during a heavy session running stock cooling and with the temps starting to climb here (up to around 27-30 degrees C today) I wouldn't say no to a noise reduction!

I'll be getting mine in this week. See if there is any merit to all the fuss.

Cherry switches are pretty sweet. Das isn't quite my first choice but it is close enough. At least they have decent USA distribution.

My new Filco arrives today. I'll post some shots for you guys so you can check out the custom doubleshot keycaps.

I might be getting a Filco board with brown switches.

I've used plenty of Filco boards. They're great, and as far as non-backlit keyboards go they're probably my favorite.

MX Brown is totally different compared to MX Blue, though. I think people expect that they are like MX Blue click just without the noise. There's no click to a MX Brown switch whatsoever, it's more like a small spot of slight friction around where the switch activates in the travel.

So, the tactility of the switch is very, very light. But it is still one of my favorite switches along with MX Red (which is basically MX Brown but without any kind of tactility at all, just linear travel). I prefer light switches.

Kyaw said:
I thought it clicked like the Blues but heavier...

So the Browns doesn't click and they are lighter than blues?

Correct. They do not really click, there's only a very light sense of actuation tactility which feels more like a very minor "bump" of friction. They are also slightly lighter than MX Blue.

MX Clear is a bit closer to MX Blue tactility, and is also heavier. Almost nobody really is using these besides Deck and Cherry themselves, though.

Hrm, got up to step 4, but it wouldn't detect the BT. The driver is already loaded. I tried to see if the BT suite was running (it wasn't) and it wouldn't start up either.

So I'm going to update the BT drivers from Asus and see what happens

edit - ok no luck on getting BT to work with it, especially since it kept on removing the BT suite and nothing would get it back short of a restart. I guess I'll have to go with it wired for now.

And blacks are just completely smooth?
How does the Brown compare to a normal membrane board? Is it similar to that?

I used an MX Revolution (+ DiNovo Edge for the keyboard) for about 2 years of PC comfy couch gaming. To be honest, it wasn't bad but my issue was more of a lack of a good KB+M setup, in terms of a table or something for it wirelessly, that "forced" me to just use a wireless 360 controller instead. Would I recommend the Revolution? I don't know, to be honest; it's a good mouse but not really gaming focused. I never really put it through proper steps in FPS gaming since I just defaulted to the 360 controller over it.

Edit: The Performance MX isn't bad either, as it's basically an ... "upgraded" version of the MX Revolution, but it loses some features. I'm not sure if it at least got a new sensor in it or anything but I do know it's a more plastic-y and lighter mouse than my Revolution.

If I had to choose a wireless mouse, I'd think of one of these four. Listing their sensors with them if you want to Google them for details.

Razer Mamba - Philips Twin Eye PLN 2032.
Logitech G700 - Avago ADNS-S9500.
Roccat Pyra - PixArt PAW3305DK-H.
Saitek RAT 9 - Philips Twin Eye PLN 2032.

Of them, I'd probably get the Mamba or G700 myself; the RAT 9 is intriguing but the build quality feels rather bad (at least, in terms of material used for the body). Both the Mamba and G700 are pretty comfortable palm grips too and, of the two, I think the Philips is the better sensor, though the Mamba supposedly has some driver issues and z-axis tracking problems; the G700 has a problem with positive acceleration so there's that to consider too.

Edit: The PTE seems to be a pretty shitty sensor so I'd probably nix that recommendation unless you're absolutely in love with the body and shape of the mouse. Low accuracy at low DPI and high jitter at higher DPI and has tracking issues on both cloth and hard pads seem to be pretty commonly reported.

I know very little on the Pyra so I can't help much :/ I recall reading it has pretty bad battery life and that it's pretty small. I'm actually not too sure if it's a good "gaming" mouse, to be honest, and kind of included it just because.

Honestly, there's a good chance I'd rather deal with the cables on any future comfy couch build.

MX Black is linear, yes. With a linear switch there's no tactility built into the mechanism so you'll just get slightly increasing force resistance throughout key travel until you bottom out on the plate.

None of the Cherry MX switches feel like rubber dome keyboards. With rubber domes, all the force is basically at the top, since the dome isn't collapsed yet. Once you collapse the dome (most rubber domes are around 65-70g force to do this) there's little resistance after that.

Cherry MX will be lightest at the top of the switch, then force increases since you're compressing a spring. For tactile switches, resistance will increase somewhat where the key actuates (about halfway down the switch on a Cherry MX), since you're pushing against both the spring and the part of the mechanism designed to create the tactility. That bump is very sharp on a MX Blue switch and rather slight on a MX Brown switch. In fact if you are used to typing hard (which basically anyone that is very used to typing on a rubber dome will be) it will be difficult to really notice the tactile portion of an MX Brown switch, because the switch is light enough that you'll push straight through it and bottom out far easier than a rubber dome.

Questions:

1. The Hyper 212+ seems to be on at full speed 24/7 i thought it was supposed to be lower at idle, then increase as temps increase?( hyper 212 box says silent operation at 13db, No way is it silent, its always at 2000rpm and you can really hear it) Is it normally like that for default on ASROCK mobo? In fact, it seems all fans are at the same speed all the time no matter what. i thought it was supposed to fluctuate.

2. How do you have the computer go sleep mode after idling for a while so it doesnt stay on all day? I am using ASROCK mobo.

thanks

thanks for all the info. i will obviously be playing with the 360 controller wherever applicable (that does NOT include fpses).

i just tried the g700 and while the mouse itself feels fine i absolutely hated all of the extra buttons. hardly any of them could be reached comfortably and they just didn't feel right, were difficult to press etc.

i also tried the microsoft sidewinder one. that one feels perfect in my hands and the location of the buttons also seemed ideal to me, but the build quality itself seemed rather shoddy and the buttons and scroll wheel felt like they would fall off soon or stop working after only a few months.

on the performance mx the placement of the thumb buttons isn't too hot. they're not immediately accessible and i have to shift my thumb up or down constantly. other than that this mouse felt fantastic and VERY comfortable. i'm sure the sensor isn't nearly as great as the ones found in any of the proper gaming mice (especially the wired ones) but honestly, i think it'll do. almost any mouse is better than having to play fpses with a controller ;)

1- Might be something in the BIOS, what's your specific board? Maybe someone with more ASRock experience will be able to help.

2- Start > Control Panel > Power Options, then go nuts with options.

Everyone on vent will absolutely hate you if you play with speakers. You get a terrible feedback loop that is unbearable. Same reason you need to turn off the radio when you call into a station.

Hey man, I actually owned a G500 and sold it with my old rig, then I ordered a an MX 518 with my new build.

Dear god I miss that G500. The difference between them is like night and day and yet I can't put a finger on what actually does it, it's heft / weight / general feel was infinitely better than the MX 518. I'm actually very surprised to see the 518 be as successfull as it is given that the G500 is within the same ballpark price wise.

God damnit I need to get rid of my current mouse and rebuy a G500.

So you can have one of each opinion...
I've tried all 3 on my computer and settled on the G9. But, I am more claw on this mouse so it's up to your style.

The MX518 and G500 are more palm oriented. The G500 has a slightly bigger hump which may be better if you have a larger hand or want more support in the middle of your hand.
I personally didn't like it and favored the MX518 over it.

All, thank you for the advice. I think I will go with the G500 because I do hold the mouse with my palm and I think it will fit my hand better.

Does anyone have a opinion on the Logitech G110 keyboard or a recommendation of keyboards in the same price range?

I used to recommend the MX 518...until I used another mouse and came back to it. The angle snapping seriously feels awful.

I wish Razer build quality was a little better. The Mamba/DeathAdder are extremely comfortable, and have the best thumb button placement and feel out of any mouse out there. My next mouse is probably going to be a Steelseries Xai. Been hearing a lot of good things about that one.

I've had my Mamba for 1.5 years now. Still works fine, but the front thumb button got looser, and it doesn't glide as nicely as my MX518 did (though that might be because of the heavy weight).

Give the DeathAdder a shot if there's one in your local store. It's also a palmed mouse, and definitely more comfortable than the G500, IMO.

I really wish the G500 had the old MX518 thumb buttons. I don't like the new ones at all.

I already got the original and 3.5, but goddamn that looks awesome.

The rubber shit they put on those Black edition DAs is garbage. It's not like the sides of the MX518, it started to come off on the thumb side of the DA after like 5 days. Wish it had just been matte plastic and I would have kept mine.

Hey all, I built my PC back in late 2009 thanks to the previous thread. Happy with it, wouldn't change a thing but saw that Newegg has some RAM on sale and wanted to get some feedback. I currently have:

1 x OCZ Obsidian 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model OCZ3OB1600LV4GK

Newegg has this on sale right now:

Patriot G series ‘Sector 5’ Edition 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model PGV38G1600ELK

My mobo can handle 8 GB so it'd be an obvious upgrade in that regard but I'm not as familiar with this brand. I have an AMD board and this mentions that it's P55 certified but I'm assuming there's no restriction to Intel systems or anything and it's just for advertising purposes. Any thoughts? $45 after MIR is a pretty nice deal and in all likelihood I could re-use this RAM if I re-build my machine again later this year or early next.

10 years ago I had the Klipsch ProMedia 4.1 system and it was an awesome system. It had great sound and the bass was booming. It died and I had to get some Logitech garbage that sounds horrible, that is now dying. I want to get 4.1 so I can have two speakers next to my computer and two next to my tv so that I can rock the sound back and forth depending on if i'm playing a game on the tv or using the computer.

I'm looking for something that compares to my sweet Klipsch 4.1 system that is no longer available.

Features I'm looking for:

- 4.1 System
- Headphone jack on one speaker or pod

Any have any suggestions?
