Is it normal for the motherboard not to display video?

When I connect hdmi from the motherboard i/o, I get no display on my monitor, currently, the only way to get display is from my video card hdmi out.

For various reasons, I would prefer to have the hdmi out come from the motherboard, is it possible to make this happen?

if you connect it to the motherboard, it will use the motherboard's IGP (or the CPUs IGP for the latest models) instead of the Video Card ... so no

there is some software solution witchery trick by LucidLogix which supposedly does make it possible with the latest Intel Z68 based boards at a ~10% performance hit, but I don't know the details

what are the various reasons? it's only a few cm further :p or is it because of the mini-HDMI on the card?

Unless you have a Lucid Z68 board you can't do both.

Well...i think i am going to pull the trigger. Going to use all of the parts in the ~$1000 OP build (i5-2500K, Corsair TX750, ASRock P67 EXTREME4, Hyper 212, etc.) except:

RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (On sale for $60)
Hard Drive: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s

Case: Rosewill GEAR X3 Gaming ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

I am going to use my old video card for now until i find a great deal on a better one.

All comes out to about $750 total (w/o video card). Just want to make sure i'm not overlooking any compatibility issues here.
Go for it

Hey guise, here is my proposed setup:

mobo: ASUS P8P67 PRO LGA 1155 SATA 6Gbps and USB 3.0 Supported Intel P67 DDR3 2400 ATX Motherboard

RAM:
Corsair XMS3 8 GB 1333 MHz PC3-10666 240-Pin DDR3 Memory Kit CMX8GX3M2A1333C9

PSU: Corsair Enthusiast Series 650-Watt 80 Plus Bronze Certified Power Supply Compatible with Intel Core i3, i5, i7 and AMD platforms 650TX v2

CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K Processor 3.3GHz 6 MB Cache Socket LGA1155

GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 580 Superclocked 1536 MB GDDR5

Already have the drives and case. College Graphic Design student so the rest wont be bought until september at least.

My question is how cheap do you think the 580 will be by then?

Gonna be a repeat of the 5000 amd series vs. 400 nvidia.
What do you mean? That nvidia will be late but be slightly faster and super hot? That nvidia will crush amd in sli/xfire drivers?

Or that amd will just be better for some nebulas reason like power per watt or single card solution?

Im not pro nvidia or pro amd. Im pro whoever gives the best high end experience. That was nvidia so they get my current vote for next gen. If amd brings the goods like the 9800/x800 line did then sign me up.

I really hate being a debbie downer but maybe wait on the gpu? Get something budget like a used 480 or even a 460 then get the refreshed 28nm cards. You are so close and the performance bump could be very large. If it was my money Id wait.

To answer your question the best and only way to get a cheap top of the line gpu is used. I used to buy only XFX bc they would warranty second hand cards. I dont know of anyone that does now but I honestly havent looked. You could save 150-200 going used or 20-50 if you catch a sale. High end gpus rarely go on discount though.

Same price. Maybe down $20 if you are lucky.

I couldn't agree more. Competition is where its at. Gimmie the goods!

Got an issue, I just overclocked my cpu to 3.2, but, like an idiot, at the same time swapped my gpu back into the main pcie slot on the mobo. I was having an issue before where the pc would BSOD every once an a while, I re-set all the parts and moved the GPU to the second PCIE slot and the problem hasn't occurred since. When I did swap it back, it booted fine, ran it in furmark for a while and it did fine, then booted up F1 2010 to do a benchmark.

About midway through the benchmark i got some mad screen tear and then the BSOD. I can't seem to remember the error, something about ???.sys, would this be a sign of a bad PCI slot or possibly just coincidental and a cpu crash from the overclock? Im re-setting the card now to test it again. I don't really know if the pc will bluescreen after an hour of running with an invalid overclock, my temps were sub 50 and everything was working great before i booted the game.

Just making sure, before I have to buy a new MOBO.

last time i had a .sys error it was a bad gpu. Doesnt mean its the same error but if I was a betting man thats where i would put my money.

Just finished putting it back into the second pcie slot, we'll see if its fixed. I really hope it's not a gpu issue, i don't have the money for that nonsense.

Quick question.

So I just got Devil May Cry 4 on my laptop and the performance demo shows it running at 90-100 frames per second.

Should I change the options to stick to 60 fps max?

Unless you are seeing frame tears, no. Welcome to the master race.

Not sure if the issue is fixed yet, but re-positioning the gpu to the bottom slot really hammers the temp... im up at least 10 degrees over where it was in slot 1, stupid PSU on the bottom...
is 82 ok for an ati card at full load or should i worry?

Edit: looks like it did it again mid way through an F1 2010 benchmark. No .sys error this time though.

I'm looking into a new GPU for my i7-920 @ 3.5ghz rig.

I'm thinking of going SLI with NVIDIA 560 Ti. What do you all recommend?

Go SLI 560 Ti or get one 580?

Would SLI 460 be good enough?

thanks in advanced

anyone recommend a great quiet video card for budget (decent) gaming rig that is possible to play newer games relatively well on? sub 200 price range?

Ok, managed to recreate the issue, all I have to do is run F1:
So it bluescreens and says Page_Fault_in_nonpaged_area which sounds like a memory issue, however before it BSOD this time, i may have messed with some memory settings in the bios, so i put them back to normal, upped my voltage a bit and I'm gonna test again. Will report back the Error if it happens.

Update: "Seems" to be working now, Just finished up it's second benchmark run of F1 2010. So far, it looks like it just needed some extra juice to keep it running.

I own this and it is pretty darn quite and powerful for the price. It wasn't so good when I had it paired with a dual core though. Combined it with an i5 now :) It was only $149 when I bought it with a $20 rebate so I got it for like nothing. It jumped up in price :(

EVGA 01G-P3-1372-TR GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) Superclocked 1GB

I overclocked it no sweat to 850 / 2000 using MSI afterburner.

I'll take the opposing position and say upgrade now if you can afford it. Too much goodness coming out the last half of this year to wait on. Battlefield 3, Star Wars Old republic, Batman Arkham City, and possibly Diablo 3. Depending on your GPU, you're going to be severely hampered with most of these games if you're not running something made in the last year and a half or so. Plus it's the summer of rebates at Newegg. I just purchased an EVGA gtx 560ti for $205 shipped a few weeks ago.

There will always be something better to come along. Both AMD and NVidia may refresh at the first of the next year, and then whoever loses the opening battle will have to refresh 6-12 months later to catch up and outperform, then the other one will have to refresh and the cycle continues....

Youre talking about the Kepler GPU's right? at first I was going to get a 560ti but you cant tri or quad sli them So I said meh. But I may end up getting one of those anyways and then just selling it when the Keplers drop..

Got a Baby due in January so Im going to have very little time to game then ;_;

How do I unlocked the Core Voltage in MSI AfterBurner?

What would be a safe voltage?

Also, what benchmark program do I use to check out my ASUS GTX 570?

OR are there any guides to overclocking my gpu? Smokey, how did you go about it?

quick question guys, turns out Microcenter is having a sale, if you buy a 2500k or 2600k they take off $40 from the cost of any mobo on this list:

http://www.microcenter.com/specials/promotions/julysave40_eNews.html

In my semi-final build list, I had the ASRock p67 from the gaf $1000 build. which one from the above list would be the best replacement? I thought I'd go with Microcenter on this deal since there's one an hour away from me. Thanks, much appreciated.

I've been gaming on laptops for the past seven years, and this is my first "proper" PC, so please play nice!

Any feedback re: RAM being rubbish, etc. would be appreciated!

Finally got my 6950 in today and replaced the cooler with a Thermalright T-Rad2 and fans. Result: very quiet with excellent cooling performance. I was struggling for a long time now to find the right card after buying a T-Rad2 and realizing it wouldn't actually fit on most of the after-market 6950 boards. Finally I found one that used a stock PCB (or near enough), Powercolor Vortex II PCS+. A bonus is that this card was factory OCd to 850 MHz, and is said to have a pretty high overclocking potential.

Anyway, for silent computing, I don't think you can do much better than this. More powerful cards may need more powerful coolers, probably the best of which would be the Accelero Xtreme Plus, which is likely the quietest to be able to cool something like a GTX580, though not as quiet as the T-Rad2).

I wrote up a mini-review on the process with photos using Imgur, which you can read here if interested.

Got the parts. Funny thing was the power supply selected was insufficent. Apparently hillariously so, but I wound up getting the OCZ 800w one. They tested it at the store for me to make sure it wasn't DOA.

Well now comes the fun part!

Pray for Mojo!

Good luck.

Before you start take a look at the motherboard manual to familiarize yourself with where everything plugs in.

Also, put in your expansion cards in last (probably just a graphics card I'm guessing) as it'll leave you with enough room to plug everything in.

Leave yourself about 3 or so hours to get it done. It takes a while unless you've planned everything out already.

PC Gaf, a few questions.

I have a Dell XPS 8300 [XPS 8300 on amazon] and the specs are as follows:
XPS 8300 Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium
-- XPS 8300
-- Black Chassis with 460 Watt Power Supply
-- 16X DVD +/- RW Drive
-- 1.5 TB SATA II Hard Drive (7200RPM)
-- 8 GB DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz (4 DIMMs)
-- 125V Power Cord
-- 1024MB ATI Radeon HD 5770 GDDR5
-- Heatsink
-- Processor: Intel Core i7-2600 processor (8MB Cache, 3.4GHz)

Will a EVGA GeForce GTX 570 1280MB GDDR5 PCI-Express 2.0 Graphics Card or something similar let me get Ultra on BF3(assuming the leaked but proven false Sys. Req. are close)
Would it fit in my case?
Would I need to upgrade my PSU?
If yes to the PSU, what is a cheap, but recommended PSU I should get?

Is the intel toolbox software any good? i.e. is it worth running the optimizer and letting it configure the system for you if it says it's not optimal etc.?

Hi GAF. I'm looking to make an upgrade, and I have an offer for a used set of:

CPU - i5 2500K
MOBO - Asrock P67 Fatality http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16813157240
Memory - GSkill Ripjaws X 2 x 2Gb DDR 2133Mhz

Considering it's used, what is a fair price I should be offering? Also Whats the maximum I should pay for something like this?

Dudes, should I be asking in another thread or something? I haven't gotten an answer 2 days in a row...is this thread only for newly bought items, and not for used items?

Mcrae, this sounds like a power issue. Do you have a motherboard speaker installed? If so, when you boot up do you get a strange amount of beeps? If not, check your motherboard LEDs for the sequence in which in boots. Does the VGA light stay on for a long time?

the LEDS are labelled 1-4, and all stay on untill just before the windows screen with the working graphic card. they all stay on for a similar amount of time with the 6970 in as well :/

daviyoung said:
I doubt it's a faulty power supply, since everything else boots up. Maybe a dodgy lead, or a dodgy socket?

Stupid question, but are you sure there's enough power getting to the GPU? I know on a GTX-570 you need 2 6-pin, or 1 8-pin + 1 6-pin running from the PSU.

On a separate note, have you tried all the possible outputs (VGA, DVI, HDMI)?

i believe there is enough power, its not powering any extra fans or anything besides motherboard, 2x HD, 1x cdrom and graphics card. ive tried dvi output to vga input and to dvi input, ill try hdmi output/input i suppose

What's a good equivalent for this motherboard listed in the $1000 build in the OP:

ASRock P67 EXTREME4 (B3)

Looks like it might be a bit hard to get for me (in Aus).

EVGA 560 Ti came in. Jesus it made my Gigabyte gtx 460 look like a toy. Everything is running smoothly. Fans come tomorrow, and my 1 year refresh will be complete

GigaByte 1GB GTX460 --> 1GB EVGA GT560 Ti

4 GB g.skill ripjaw ------> 4 GB g.skill ripjaw + 8GB g.skill sniper

2 Enermax 120mm magma + case fans -----> 5 enermax 120mm magma + lone 200mm case fan.

Basically my rig should be much cooler after tomorrow allowing for more stable OC'ing during this heatwave. At this point with my i5-750 being OC'ed with a HM 212+, I feel the last 2 upgrades left are a SSD and an IPS panel to replace my 5 year old TN. Most likely going to get my SSD at xmas, because I am tired of this 5400RPM drive holding back my rig.

Sometimes, I really think we should update the OP title to:

"I need a New PC" 2011 Thread of NO ONE KNOWS HOW YOUR BUILD WILL RUN BF3

But really, no one knows how that will run BF3.

The Z68 version is pretty easy to find here. It's a little bit dearer though at $200ish.

Seriously. Im not ignoring you (askers of this question), any answer would be foolish besides some of the footage we have seen was running on one 580gtx.

Question:

With the "damn capable" ($600) build from the OP, should I expect the ability to play most games at 1080p resolutions with steady framerates? What sort of sacrifices will I need to make on image quality? I find benchmark sites relatively unhelpful on this front, because they're addressing the highest end of the graphics curve, so I don't know how they apply to the real world.

Also, any drawbacks to ditching the ASRock board for a different manufacturer's board (i.e: Gigabyte or other) using the same chipset?

What's your expectation for the longevity of such a system? (i.e: how long would you expect I could use it as a game machine before wanting for an upgrade?)

A little background: I'm a lapsed PC gamer and also a lapsed Windows user (until about two years ago, I had almost exclusively worked on Macs at my job)... looking at the possibility of rejoining the PC gaming world as I need to upgrade my Mac and would consider doing it depending on the price (need the Mac regardless but would go lower-end-plus-PC if it seemed worthwhile)

Anyhow, after looking into it for a little while, I've got to say I totally understand why people are intimidated by PCs. In the time I've been "gone," I've lost any sort of valuable knowledge I may have had about hardware. I think processor naming conventions make less sense know than they did six or seven years ago, and graphics cards are a total mystery to me (but I think they got a little hard to figure as Nvidia started to become the big name).

Newegg should have the dimensions in the details section of whichever model card you want. You'll have to get out the measuring tape and use it on the inside of your case to see if you've got room.

You'll probably need at least a 500w PSU for that card, maybe more with all the other stuff you've got in that rig as well. The recommended PSUs are on the first page of this thread.

Click settings at bottom. Then check the "Unlock voltage" box.

I started at my base speed and upped it by 20 while keeping voltage the same. I'd keep doing that until it was unstable in games. Then I'd raise the voltage a bit and try again. If it worked I kept voltage there and continued raising the speed in small increments.
