I finished building my computer! Now some questions to know if things are running correctly...

my case is wide open and next to my face so i can hear/see if anything is going wrong. When the cpu is under load like running a program that uses cpu, i hear a high pitched wierd sound from cpu, i dont think its the fan, is that normal? Could it be the heating up of the mx-4 thermal paste?

I ran the Windows Experience Index and got a 5.9, is that normal with (2500k, GTX570, 4gb ram, WD caviarblack 1tb) ?

Also while running the WEI my cpu got hotter, went up to 46'ish C on all four cores. Im really worried because im afraid of any mess ups on the hyper 212+ cooler with mx-4 paste. it idles at 30, 28, 31, 31 on all cores. (using REALTEMP)

Thanks guys, building a new computer can make you really paranoid about whats going on.

Speaking of games I need some help. I just bought Alice and in the very very beginning of the game when you first take control of her, I'm seeing FPS in the low teens. I looked at Afterburner and it showed that my 580 maxed at 42% usage. I fired up Crysis 2 just to make sure something wasn't wrong with the card and it ran like normal.

Any idea of what's going on here?

Anybody?

The WEI is just testing out your memory, processor, and graphics cards. It's normal to see that. During the summer my idle temps are about the same as yours, and in the winter they go down to 22-24, so really it depends on ambient temperature of your room.

I also went with the hyper 212+ and mx-4. You're golden.

those are my temps without overclock, what temps do you get when gaming under load? Thanks

Is the thermal paste that comes with the 212 not very good? And also I cannot get the stock cpu fan plug off the motherboard. It is not coming off and I don't want to yank it.

Unplug it with one of this, gently.

Have you tried disabling all the settings, playing at minimum and seeing if there's a change in framerate? Might be the game

I'm at least able to run around and it's in the 20s range...

For whatever reason it's like the game isn't using my 580. In afterburner it's barely showing any utilization...

Over in the Alice thread it appears no body else has had this issue. People running Physx and everything and are playing the game perfectly fine.

I have the same mouse, I like it quite a bit. Good build over all. Do you have a monitor, speakers, and a mousepad?

I have a 30 inch Philips HDTV and an older 21 inch Samsung with bleeding issues. I got a headset for for speakers (Gamecom 367) and the Steelseries Qck + as mousepad.

Just need to get a magnetic screwdriver maybe, Windows 7 and maybe a wireless solution.

Will running a PCI-E 1X soundcard in a PCI-E 4X or larger affect my system in a negative way? Especially with regards to my GPUs.

Odd indeed, yeah saw your post there. I'm running it with an old 275 at max 1920x1080 medium physx and still reach 60fps at times, only getting real slowdowns when there's smoke, liquid and debris all coming in at the same time. Drivers maybe? I'm using 275.27 I believe

Hey guys, a bit of PC help needed.

I recently (a few months ago) built a new PC. I had the OS installed on a SSD and lately I've been noticing the appdata folder ballooning in size. It's almost filled up the damn drive.

Can I move it somewhere else? And how? Googling has given me mixed answers on this.

I plan on getting the 2500k. I have the 212 in my wish list as well, but do I really need it?
Anyone? Also, the R3 is all I've been wanting for a case for a long time. I would game on it as well, but I saw something from on e of the user reviews on newegg that gave me pause.

"In stock configurations this is not a case for gaming but with the moduvents open there is quite a bit of airflow."

What are moduvents? If I do plan on gaming, am I looking at the wrong case?

I just re-downloaded and checked the 'clean install' box on the newest nvidia drivers (275.33). I took some stuff out when the Witcher 2 was launched as it was having a bit of trouble until the game was patched. I just let it install everything (the 3D driver as well) this time.

Did that fix your problem Smokey?

If you want to overclock, yes. And I have the R3, it's a great case. You can add more fans to it if you wish, and I'm not sure what moduvents are but I'm guessing the the opening on top.

Ok, without the case doors, my temps CPU temps were idling at 30,29,31,31. Now i closed it up it went up like 2 degrees C and the temp variation is wider going up and down. Whats the point of closing the case if its not going to help with airflow and temp??

So my 580 SLI has been tearing through games but like I said, it's hot as fuck. Wasn't really bothering but I was keeping an eye on it.

The bottom card was at 87 and the top card was 80, and I got a BSOD and reboot. I think the first line said something "DRIVER_" but didn't have didn't have that much time to read it. Going to take picture if it happens again and do some research on it

May not be able to handle teh SLI ;(

Which is the most likely the issue?
- PSU (850HX) can't hold a 580 SLI (playing Rift when it happend) and 4.5 Ghz i5 OC (never happened prior to SLI though)?
- Cards or system overall got too hot and shut down?
- Something else?

Anyone got some knowledge to share? Perhaps an SLI fan profile. Thinking about going to get a 1200AX psu from Microcenter.

Ok finally gave up on trying to unlock the shaders on my 6950. Ended up just changing the damn clock speeds and such via Afterburner.

I wouldn't overclock so I guess I'd be okay. Still not sure about the 212, and if I need it or not.

I think he meant if you want to overclock get the 212, the R3 is a great case whatever.

I already posted some stuff about the temperatures

as for the BSOD ... if it is an issue with the GPU I would expect the driver to just shutdown (like it does when overclocking too much) which results in only the application crashing and the driver simply rebooting within a second or so, no BSOD

if a (Corsair HX) PSU can't handle the load it will simply power off (overload shutdown), again no BSOD

So yeah seems like something else, especially because 87c is lower than the thermal shutdown of 95~97c. Something else could be anything really though, probably driver related. You've got an overclocked Sandy Bridge?

and I think it's the upper card that's 87c not the bottom one (or you got weird airflow going on)

Saren, it sounds like we have similar builds. I have a 2600k OC to 4.5, I have 2 SLI 580's OC to 900Mhz and the highest load temp I have ever seen was 82c or so. This is with Unigine running anywhere from 6-10 runs at 97% avg. use on each card.

I do have a Corsair 1200 PSU so not sure if that is what the cause of it is for you. Are your Cards OC at all or stock? Did you make a custom fan profile? That helps alot, it does increase noise, but when gaming and my 5.1 is cranking, I dont even hear the cards when the fans are at 80%.

Smokey, Corky...we all got our PC's built around the general same time and I am with you guys in that PC gaming is so fucking awesome. I have not really touched my consoles in a long time. Yesterday I used my PS3 to watch a movie, have not gamed on it for over 3 months...360 get's a little more use, but really have not gamed on it for more than 30 min at a time and maybe once a week.

I am so fucking backlogged cause of so many people posting the insane deals, my latest was Bulletstorm for $13.00. But my list and this is not complete is so out of control and backlogged:

Mass Effect
Mass Effect 2
Dragon Age Origins
Dragon Age Awakening
Two Worlds 2
Darksiders
Half Life 2
Half Life 2: Episode 1
Half Life 2: Episode 2
StarCraft
Rift
The Witcher 2 **
Battle Field 2
Need for Speed Shift 2
Test Drive Unlimited
NBA 2k11
Need for Speed Hot Pursuit (the new one)
Crysis 2
Crysis Warhead
Fable 3
Gears of War
Bulletstorm

All of these games were purchased in the last 4-6 months and have not had time to play alot of them. It's just some of the deals are so f'n good, it is hard to pass up on the deals. Both Mass Effects I got for about $12 each.

** The Witcher 2 is far and above the best PC game I have played. Visually, it is so f'n stunning and just an amazing game.

Your backlog is missing dead space. So awesome on PC.

Gee..thanks, Like I really need to add more to the backlog...but joking aside, I have had my eye on it and will wait for a sale on it. All I know that I have a ton of games and when there is a drop off in new releases, I know I have a ton of other games I can play.

To the poster above: thanks for the input, may be an unlucky coincidence that I had 2 BSODs after SLI. Played some more Rift and had manual fan speed at 80% and it was 75-65 degrees.

Both my cards are the SC version of the eVGA so they are at whatever speed it's default for them, not much of an OCer for video cards.

Fan profile will probably help seeing as cranking up the fan made it better. Still may go get that 1200W PSU. And yes it was GPU1 on my eVGA precision app thy had the higher temp (rather, the first GPU listed)

Thanks for the input guys. Hawk, you mind sharing your profile?

Lol for all this talk of HL2 and whatnot, you know how much time I've spent playing it? My Steam counter says 3 minutes. Portal 1? 2 minutes.

Love my funcpad...been using it for 7 years. Ordered a second one as backup when I feel my first one is getting old in the tooth (still good though).

So PC Gaf what is the better graphics card?
This GTX 460 or this Radeon HD 6850?
When I did a comparison on this site it looks like I should just go with the 460 because of the price. I'm not the type to care about a couple of frames but should I spend the extra for the Radeon?

That's a GTX 460 SE, which is much slower than the GTX 460. Yeah, blame NVidia for having ridiculously stupid naming conventions.

Hmmm. What would be a good graphics card that is cheaper than the Radeon but gets almost the same FPS? I mostly want to go like $20 cheaper or something.

Oh my, I just realized that I'll be able to claim my build on my tax return. Budget has been bumped up :D

Looking at CPU cooling solutions, is the NH-D14 still the go to hsf? I'm liking the look of the Corsair H60 but they're priced almost exactly the same here and the d14 seems to outperform it in every aspect. The Noctua fans look hideous in pictures, are they nicer in the flesh?

Only going to drop an extra $100 or so and this is the only extraneous thing I can think to put my money towards (not buying a gpu) or I can go with a 2600K and stick with the Hyper 212+.

I just built that capable build in the op. It will not start. This has happened to me three builds in a row, and it's annoying as shit. I tried two PSU's. I tried reseating the Heatsink. Nothing is working. If it's that stupid power switch being on the wrong pins, I'm gonna rage.

EDIT: I tired the power switch like 4 different ways. Nothing. Is this a possible DOA Mobo?

All the high end air coolers will outperform the Corsair H series from what I've seen (unsure about the upcoming H100). Having said that, all you get out of the H series is your foot into watercooling and a tidier look. Other air coolers are the Prolimatech Megahalems, Thermalright Ultra Extreme 120, Silverarrow.

Other coolers depend on your case, some, like the Thermalright Archon might not fit as it's too tall. Others might have fans that aren't high enough to clear your ram, or could block off the slot closest to the CPU.

4608Y.jpg

For those with the 2600k, what's your OC and voltage at? I'm still at 4.0 with stock voltage.

ok, did I install the cooler with the right amount of thermal paste correctly? Im running prime 95 right now and using real temp and my temps are hovering at 54-55C on all cores on load ( i chose the first TFT test option). That looks like i dont have much space to overclock as ive read 55C is what you aim up to for overclocking... With stock cooler being able to overclock, why would my hyper 212+ with mx-4 paste be at these temps during load?

What mobo is it?

Also, is the PSU power switch switched to on?

Do you have both the ATX 20-pin and 8-pin connectors in correctly?

I wonder why it's not emphasized in this thread that people should test the mobo placed on an anti-static plastic sheet before putting the mobo in the case.
