I'm thinking of maybe buying a new power supply to support my build which I just bought:

Samsung 1TB Spinpoint F3 SATA II 7200RPM 32M x2
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus Universal Cooler
Intel Core i5 2500K Processor LGA1155 3.3GHz CPU
Corsair CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 4GB (2x XMS3 2GB) PC-12800
Asus P8P67 PRO V3 L1155 P67
Crucial RealSSD C400 128G SATAIII
GTX 570
Fractal Design R3 case

I've got an old Antec TP3 650w power supply from my computer computer that I was going to put into this build, but I'm now thinking of getting a new power supply all together because my old one only supports 4 sata connections and I kind of want 5. Plus I want enough power to support more case fans etc. I have bought the parts listed above already, but haven't had the time to put any of it together yet.

I was recommended to get a Thermaltake Tough Power XT 875W. Seen here. It's expensive but its modular and supports up to 8 sata cables and everything I could want.

Do you think it's worth it or am I going overboard?
Transfer your old PSU over and buy power splitters for $5.
IF you plan to drop more $ on Sli/xFire buy a new PSU then.

I have a Crucial, not an OCZ. Hopefully it won't have similar problems though, but I guess all SSDs are practically identical in components.
Sort of.
A lot of SSDs use the same controller type (e.g. SandForce 22__ or Micron). Then you have brand firmware per drive, utilities for each drive, how each drive stores and does it data compression, and what type or memory it is using.

A lot of those will be similar across brands on similar models, but there is a lot of SSD variety now. Variety of hiccups too.

Did Crucial have any SandForce drives? I can't remember. In any case, that's where most of the problems seem to be coming from, so unless you got a SandForce drive you're probably fine (although now Intel is having problems too, which is weird).

Power cycling for 3 hours straight. We will see if there is a legitimate problem soon enough.

Just realized that my computer can't come out of sleep (Asus PZ68 Pro). I understand this was an issue with the P67s too.

Was it ever solved?
Disable Internal CPU PLL. Seems to affect both P67 and Z68 MBs.

If you ever take off the heatsink/cooler, you pretty much have to clean off the paste off the CPU and heatsink and reapply some new paste.

So if I take it out and just put it back is,byebye cpu??

heh, I made my buddy spend a bit more dough on the intel 320 because intel has the least amount of problems... and now this :\

I went with Intel 320 over OCZ for the same reason. This is the first issue I've heard with Intel SSD's and hopefully they get it patched. Nature of the beast with SSD's. They are maturing but at the same time they're still at that stage where issues like this can come up.

It's all good. I still <3 my SSD.

Most likely, NO. Doing that would make your CPU temps hotter due to thermal paste not spreading even anymore, have bubbles and so on. The only issue would be if you had too much paste, it moved and made contact with the MB. That could cause CPU to not make proper contact with MB pins anymore. And, worse, the thermal paste is conductive which could cause a short.

SATA question:

Can I use a regular old SATA-cable to connect a SATA3 hdd to a SATA3 motherboard ?

I ask because the motherboard (H67M) came with two different SATA-cables. Only one says "SATA 6Gb/s". It looks exactly the same, except for these metal clips/hooks on the connectors, a bit like those on UTP-connectors.

I'll have two 6Gb/s drives... (WD WD5000AAKX & Crucial M4 CT064M4SSD2)
Do I need two of those new cables ? Or is it marketing bullshit and does an old cable work exactly the same ?

I just ordered a 160GB 320 10 minutes ago. Should I cancel and get the 120GB 510 instead?

Sigh, i canceled my intel 320 ssd order...

Should I go with the Intel 510 120 GB or a Crucial m4? My budget is in the $250 to $300 range

Yeah, well my plan to convince my wife didn't work. lol

She's most afraid I'll plug wires in wrong, put to much pressure snap processors and boards into place (similar to putting in a new printer cartridge), or organize the wires into a firetrap. She also doesn't want me having all the boxes and parts strewn all over the place.

Oh well I tried. She did say if I could find someone to help me out with it she'd be fine with it, but I'm just going to see how much Microcenter wants tonight.

I have the Intel 510 120GB SSD and it's awesome. It's ridiculously fast in both standard everyday desktop usage and it literally takes about 8-10 seconds from my pressing the power button to reaching the desktop and being ready to go. I've had zero issues with it thus far. Highly recommended.

daviyoung said:
I can't recommend the Crucial highly enough. No idea about Intel though.

Did you do the firmware upgrade to fix the freezing issues people were having? I really want to skip that sort of hassle, so the Intel 510 is starting to appeal to me.

Sigh... why'd the 320s have to get that bug, they seemed like the safest choice too

smh

Put up a good battle though lol. Microcenter charges $50 to put a machine together. I almost went that route. Then they'll try and throw in warranty etc, but it's $50 base.

Sorry I did a search but I'm not sure where to post this.

I have been having trouble with my PC, mainly since I got it in may, like freezes and such.
This morning my hard drive completely went to shit and wouldn't even allow me to install a crysis patch. I ran a disk defragmention program to try and fix it ( I have done this before but didn't notice a difference )

I left it while I was out all day and I just got back to a black screen saying Reboot and Select proper Boot device or insert Boot Media.
I restarted it, but kept getting this message so I got my windows 7 copy and its now taking me to install windows.

Is there no way to recover my hard drive or did this defragmention program wipe it?

Thanks in advance

This is pretty much my PC http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120674170615

Alright, I've wittled the list down and think I should get an ASUS GeForce GTX 580 DirectCU II.

It's cheaper than the MSI and is meant to be pretty quite as well.

Nice

I really enjoy mine. I've gotten it OC'd up to 850 and using nearly all of the available VRAM in certain titles like Crysis 2 and I've never seen the temps get higher than 65C while playing a game. It's usually in the 60-63 range. Idles around 36C. As you mentioned it is also very quiet. I run my fans at 40% and can't hear it at all when gaming. Barely audible when not. Only thing I don't *like* about it is the 1.5GB RAM and that it's triple slot making it tough to do SLI.

Other than that a great 580 and will easily handle anything you throw at it.

Defragging shouldn't wipe your HDD, but if it's a serious problem it won't fix it either.

Let Windows install itself again and see what happens. It might be a problem with your BIOS or your HDD. In your BIOS (mash DEL at start-up) you should be able to choose a boot device manually.

This thread offers good advice if you think your HDD is finished: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=436973

Thanks I'll go ahead and reinstall
I should be able to get a brand new hard drive hopefully, I think I'm still in warrenty.

Now I can't even reinstall because it doesnt detect a drive to install to. I could use an external hard drive until I get a new one?

Not connected? That's strange. There should be an option for you to enable or disable the SATA ports. If they're already enabled and it's still saying not connected, then it looks like it's time for a new HDD.

I tried. :)

If it's only 50 dollars base, then I'm fine with it. They mentioned 60, 86, 125, 175 and then wouldn't expound (well she didn't know) what they were. I hope it's just base plus warranties and nothing else. I just want the plug it in and I'll do all the software stuff. I'm just more annoyed with waiting 4-5 days. That's why I want to get over their tonight and get the goods paid for and in the chain.

Oh time for a little win, that mobo that was 134 than somehow changed to 94 in the cart is now sold out. I already have my reservation slip though. :)

Anyone thing they'll try and not honor the mobo price?

Ah it says OnChip SATA Channel : Enabled

This is kind of annoying, can't wait to re download everything -.-

Thanks a lot for your help daviyoung

Do you have a secondary PC? If so, what you'll want to do is burn an Ubuntu Live CD to a disc. Boot from that, and see if you can access the drive. If you can't, unplug the computer from the wall, open it, and try connecting the HDD to another SATA controller (it should be a different color on the board. If it's not, just try any other SATA slot). Boot, and see if the HDD shows up in post. If it doesn't, try a different SATA cable.

Once you've gotten it recognized, I'd suggest backing up all of your data to that external drive. Once your data is secure, you can go about trying to recover your Windows installation.

(You could skip trying to back your data up but....I wouldn't.)

If you just can't get the HDD to show up, you could buy an external dock like this one (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...7153066&cm_re=HDD_Dock-_-17-153-066-_-Product) and see if you can't get it recognized in Ubuntu that way.

Don't do anything crazy (like reinstalling an OS, formatting, etc) until your data is safely backed up. If you value your data, that is.

The price changed because Microcenter was having a $40 combo deal (Buy a 2500k, get $40 off the price of a compatible mobo, or something along those lines). Probably, anyway.

Well I'll certainly give it a try.

Just make sure you click "Run Ubuntu from disc" (or a similar prompt) and not "install Ubuntu to disc"

You'll need to get the drive to POST first, of course.

Open your side panel, and tell us if you hear the drive trying to spin up when you turn on the computer (once you've tried swapping out SATA cables, and positions on the mobo. You could also try a different SATA power plug)

Ah good, I didn't even notice that, I was afraid it was a pricing mistake and that it would get rectified. Good thing I ordered when I did!

Hey guys,

I have question for all you guys. I have really good DVD drive and CD writer.

I have an old PC though. The case I own is this:

Antec cases:
SLK2600AMB.jpg

I have never built my own PC though. I was wondering if I was to buy new motherboard, chip, power supply, a new graphics and new ram. Would I be able to use the same case?

Do I really need to buy a new case?

Amazon link to my current case that show the insides of the laptop: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00006HYNZ/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Also what you recommend for the current case that I have my pc in?

Current PC: P4 2.6c GHz, 512 3200 DDR Ram, Nvidia Geforce 5700 Ultra, Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS, 160 Gig and 30 Gig Hard drive, Pioneer DVD-Rom, Windows XP Pro.

Somehow, when I restarted my PC randomly I was able to get back onto windows with all my data.
I'm gunna back it all up but it doesn't convince me that the hard drive is still working properly and it may be the causes of all the freezes I have during pretty much every game I play for more than 45 minutes.

Tambini said:
Oh I've done that a few times.
One more time can't hurt though :-)

It didn't find any issues? Hmm...that's odd. Was a cable just loose or something? I definitely wouldn't trust any important data to that drive until I had figured out what the problem was.

Yeah this whole thing is odd.
Brand new PC and it can't handle games for more than 40 mins without freezing.
I think it all started when Portal 2 froze while saving but who knows. I contacted the people who put the PC together for me but if anyone knows a solution, if there is one, it would be great.

What model number PSU is in that thing? Maybe it's junk, and it just can't handle the load for very long.

Then again, that shouldn't have caused your HDD to be unreadable, so I'm stumped.

So I got the budgets for 3 desktops bumped up and went with a slightly modified version of the under $600 build in the OP. Looks like an assembly line of pc building will be in full swing on the weekend. Thanks for the recommendations, OP.

This is the PC exactly http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120674170615

I too am stumped, but as long as the warranty means I can get a new hard drive, I should be ok.

It may be unrelated to the HDD, it could be the GPU for all I know. I have never seen the GPU go over 65c, but the fans pick up pretty loudly after about 10 minutes.
