I too am stumped, but as long as the warranty means I can get a new hard drive, I should be ok.

It may be unrelated to the HDD, it could be the GPU for all I know. I have never seen the GPU go over 65c, but the fans pick up pretty loudly after about 10 minutes.

That listing doesn't go into the specifics of the PSU. If it does, I can't find it.

Yeah, well my plan to convince my wife didn't work. lol

She's most afraid I'll plug wires in wrong, put to much pressure snap processors and boards into place (similar to putting in a new printer cartridge), or organize the wires into a firetrap. She also doesn't want me having all the boxes and parts strewn all over the place.

Oh well I tried. She did say if I could find someone to help me out with it she'd be fine with it, but I'm just going to see how much Microcenter wants tonight.

No offense, but thats like your Wife telling you that you dont make good sex, and you can only have sex with her if you find someone else to help you out with it.

Not really, it's not different than wanting me to learn from experience. Like if I was building a chair, work with someone who already is.

Actually she said I can do the installation at home tonight, I just need to make sure that I can still bring the unit into Microcenter if I start having issues or only partly done and have them finish it.

Microcenter said my build would be 85 bucks, but only be a day or so.

So it looks like I'm getting to build it. :)

I expect you all to be ready at a moments notice ;P
Good luck and Godspeed.

Hey guys,

I have question for all you guys. I have really good DVD drive and CD writer.

I have an old PC though. The case I own is this:

Antec cases:
SLK2600AMB.jpg

I have never built my own PC though. I was wondering if I was to buy new motherboard, chip, power supply, a new graphics and new ram. Would I be able to use the same case?

Do I really need to buy a new case?

Amazon link to my current case that show the insides of the laptop: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00006HYNZ/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Also what you recommend for the current case that I have my pc in?

Current PC: P4 2.6c GHz, 512 3200 DDR Ram, Nvidia Geforce 5700 Ultra, Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS, 160 Gig and 30 Gig Hard drive, Pioneer DVD-Rom, Windows XP Pro.

Anyone guys please? Will I still be able to use my old case to build the computer?

maybe the wrong topic but since i can't make a new one and people here seem to know there way around the computer i just ask:

i have not two monitors on my GTX460 and on one screen i want to practice a bit SF4 and on the other screen i want to have a fullscreen video or whatever.

i start the game and whenever i click on the other screen the game just minimizes.

I said before to get the Antec 380w or the OCZ. That CM is just a 400W unit with a new sticker on it. AGAIN, the Antec 380w has more power on the 12V. It's better than that '460W' unit.
The CM 460 will be fine, but the antec is a better part.
Manos no Samsungs or WD Blacks?

Yup, you just need a way to start the secondary one as stated.

Need to run it fullscreen (windowed) or in windowed mode.

I'm picking the stuff after work, so I expect to start around 9-10 PM EST.

Good luck. A good rule of thumb is that if you need to put much pressure on it, you've done something wrong (the only exception here really is the lever holding the CPU, and maybe the push-pins for the cooler). You could build on the mobo's static bag first as well, if you want to avoid having to install components inside the case. I find it easier that way.

I won't be here (UPS is going to deliver A Dance With Dragons at some point, and I'm going to be dead to the world for days) but if you have any questions, be sure to ask.

Case looks good. Everything in it probably not.

Cool,

What should I get then? Something that would be able to play the latest game on a good settings. My price range is 800 dollars-ish.

I hoping to replace the motherboard, cpu, ram, and the graphics card. Maybe the power supply, my current supply is 350W.

I can salvage the cd-writer, dvd-rom, sound card, and the case.

Check the OP (first posts of this thread) and get everything from the $600 OP build. Maybe throw in an Crucial M4 64GB SSD too ($100) for lightning fast Windows and your most-used programs.

You'll probably need a new optical drive too, if the ones you have now are still IDE. Motherboards these days don't have IDE connectors anymore. :(
But with $800 your budget is high enough for a good dvd-burner, which are only $25 these days.

I did, newegg said some of the components are not there. :( How is i7 vs i5 for the computer?

The OP Computer is i5. :\

I actually just switched to the Antec 380w now. There wasn't any in stock last night, but there was now when I just checked.

I need to get a plug now don't I?

The Hitachi was cheaper and had 1.5 TB. That said I have been thinking of switching to a 1TB WD or Seagate, I wasn't even thinking of Samsung.

Build quality, speed, and noise matter. Don't buy computer parts that are cheaper just because they are cheaper.

Microcenter should give you a cord if you ask (At least I'd hope so). You can pick them up anywhere or use a spare one you have lying around.

Sub in XFX Core 550w
2500K (i5 vs i7 = 4 threads vs. 8 threads. Both have 4 cores. 2600K is a niche chip)
4GB G.Skill
MSI P67A-C43 (B3)
Samsung F3 1TB
GTX 560 Ti / 6950

I agree, like I said at the time it was out of stock, it seems like they just got one back in. Cool that they should give me the cord though.

Since its only 5 bucks more for a Samsung or WD HD which do you recommend. I would like at least one gig and no more than 59.99?

Do Hitachi's have high fail rates?

I assume I should get a grounding cord too? I'm working on my kitchen table, which has a rug underneath, but I'm going to move the rug.

No problem. I feel that Hitachi's are not overall as good drives. Plus (for what it is worth) there are more 1 star ratings for that drive than others.
F3 over the Black.

Hmm, I'll keep that in mind. Luckily they have a ton of the F3's in stock. That said I hate paying more for less HD space (keeping in mind your very valid point though). I think I'm just so use to having no space from my 200gb one in my laptop and 500gb for an external I have, the idea of a 1TB is still foreign. lol I just want to have all my games installed at once, no more do I have enough space or not games, and I wonder if 1TB is going to be enough.

I do plan on trying to centralize everything into Steam or possibly Mediaman (thanks to Minsc for the suggestion). I want to run a clean desktop for once and know where everything is being installed.

For them to build the computer ;)

That said with sales tax the total is going be around 705-720 (depending on if I get a different HD and a grounding cord).

I also have ~$65 in mail in rebates, though I dislike get a Visa gift card. I like depositing the check in the bank account.

I did save a ton on the video card, mobo, and processor (a hell of lot on the later two) so the ability to get it in store outweighs having it mailed, but not paying sales tax (plus PA is pretty reasonable).

Ok GAF I really need your help. Today, I woke up and my computer will not start. It literally doesn't do a thing when I press the power button. Except when I reset my power adapter to the wall my computer switched on for just a second...then nothing.

I opened it up and the little light on the MB is on so I know it's getting some kind of power....

I don't understand because it was working just fine last night and nothing has changed. Help!!

ah. figured it was the labor.
that's a good price, nonetheless.

Funny enough, that's what helped convince my wife to let me try...well and that Microcenter said I could still bring it in and they would finish the build if I ran into problems or felt overwhelmed (she wanted a backup in place).

I have a Phenom II 925 stock clocked, I'm considering upgrading to a 955 since it won't require a new mobo. Would it be worth it? I'm comfortable with overclocking, I just don't know if it would be worth the extra wait to save for 2500k and new mobo. Main use for my pc is gaming and i feel like my processor may be bottlenecking my 5750 or the other way around(you guys may be able to tell me which one it is, i'm still pretty new to PC hardware). So, I guess I have 2 questions then, which should I upgrade first(CPU or GPU) and what would be the better value upgrade for a cpu (obviously i know the 2500k is better than the 955, but a new motherboard + the cost of the processor could have me waiting a few months)?
Thanks for any help!

You might be able to get a Phenom II x6 in there... I was debating the same thing withmu 940 BE. My mobo is an Am2+/Am3 ...

Nothing worth spending the money to upgrade to. Overclock your current chip and wait it out. Should get around 3.3Ghz
Do you actually need more CPU power, or GPU?

Honestly i have no idea, I know the 5750 is a weak card by today's standards for sure. But, I don't know if it's something I should be upgrading before I upgrade my cpu. Sounds like you're saying my CPU is ok though. I'd like to be able to run games that aren't on the Source engine at max settings 1680x1050 with some AA and 30+ fps. I never expected my current setup to do that, so I can't complain, and that's why I'm looking to upgrade.

other info:
Win7 64
2x2 gigs of G.skill (Ripjaw I believe)
550w PSU

Wait the few months for a proper upgrade. Or, buy a 990fx mobo now, and grab a bulldozer when that releases.

My Asus P67 Pro keeps on DOUBLE booting. Shows the ASUS splash screen twice.

How do I make it only show once? I haven't OC'd BTW. I actually did remember reading somewhere I had to change a setting in the BIOS. I did so and it stopped the double booting. Only problem is I reset all settings when I had a problem earlier (turns out I had to reformat my HDD to fix the problem :\)

Is it normal for the motherboard not to display video?

When I connect hdmi from the motherboard i/o, I get no display on my monitor, currently, the only way to get display is from my video card hdmi out.

For various reasons, I would prefer to have the hdmi out come from the motherboard, is it possible to make this happen?

turn off [disable] all onboard stuff you don't use, one of them is probably the Marvell SATA controller which causes the double boot screen stuff

if it is truly double booting (e.g. turn on, off, on again) then you need to update the bios to something recent

I remember asking them how much it would cost when I bought my stuff from them and I remember them telling me 50 bones.

Fyi everyone. The AMD 7xxx has been confirmed to be launching 4th quarter of this year. :)

Gonna be a repeat of the 5000 amd series vs. 400 nvidia.

Well...i think i am going to pull the trigger. Going to use all of the parts in the ~$1000 OP build (i5-2500K, Corsair TX750, ASRock P67 EXTREME4, Hyper 212, etc.) except:

RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (On sale for $60)
Hard Drive: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s

Case: Rosewill GEAR X3 Gaming ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

I am going to use my old video card for now until i find a great deal on a better one.

All comes out to about $750 total (w/o video card). Just want to make sure i'm not overlooking any compatibility issues here.
