I'm getting some really shitty crashes on Deus Ex with my GTX580. One with something like artifacts, a block pattern all over the screen for one second, but just in the game. Then some more randomn crashes, gpu-z showed that at one point in time it measured there was no data to register at all. Is this just driver bullshit or am i trouble? Temperatures seem fine.

Chinner said:
what colour are the artefacts and have you played many other dx10/11 games on your rig?

I've played Dirt3, AssBro, TF2, Portal 2 with no problems. Last night I played deus ex for 2,5 hours with no problems. And the artefact was grey ish, kinda like the game's colour scheme.

not green? there is a issue with 580 crashing with green artefacts because they're undervolted. raising the voltage would fix this problem.

Re-quoting myself as I didn't get an answer when I asked a few days ago.

try holding down shift and click 'x' to close the problem. dont know if it will work, works for windows folder and IE.

nope not green, it was grey ish. I think its just poor driver issues, but i'm not sure.

So as far as game settings for Nvidia cards, do you guys use the CP, D3D Overrider, something else, just the in-game options? All these various AA solutions are confusing, and as far as I've ever tried, using the Nvidia CP does jack shit.

I'm not talking about overclocking. Just triple buffering, vsync, etc

1. He needs 2x 2gb (of the exact same RAM. Same brand, model number, speed, etc). It may be cheaper to take advantage of one of the many 2x4gb deals out there right now, depending on how much the RAM he has goes for. (He can't mix and match though)

... what? You absolutely can run 2 sticks of 2GB and 2 sticks of 4GB in a system the same time, from different manufacturers, as long as they can all run at the specified speed/timings. So having different rated speed RAM is fine as long as they're all running at the speed of the lowest rated module.

I had heard that you could run into issues doing that. If each channel was a matched pair, and at the same speed, you could make it work even if those pairs weren't the same brand and model I guess (2x Kingston for instance, and then 2x G.Skill). I would rather have both pairs be matched though.

There is the added benefit of knowing your mobo will accept that particular RAM, when buying matched sets. Even with the same identical stick in all four slots, I've had trouble booting before, and I could only imagine that doing it with different pairs would add to the trouble.

If it's vastly cheaper to go with a different brand for some reason, by all means.

Yeah, they're shit.

I hope they get their shit together before the BF3 beta =/

Well consider yourselves lucky. They caused me all types of problems and there are numerous complaints on Nvidia's forums as well as overclock.net

I'm on the beta drivers that became the 280 drivers (I forget the number) and I've had BC2 hard crash on me. It had never happened before that. I can't conclusively say that it was the drivers though.

Generally speaking, I've put myself on a month behind driver update schedule for video card drivers. Jumping on new drivers is like jumping on a grenade (The BF3 alpha kind of put a wrench in my wait-a-month-to-upgrade strategy)

Used 3DMark 11 with my new MSI Lightning card @ 915mhz. I was able to get that without adjusting the voltage which is set at 1.012 from the factory :

Card is a beast. I'm gonna try and hit 950mhz. Will probably have to up the voltage a little bit, but it shouldn't be a problem hitting that at all.

I didn't have any issues with the beta 280 drivers either. Just for my sanity though I rolled back to 275 and will stick here until Nvidia gets their shit together.

Is there anything good about them (ie. performance increases with new releases?) or are they a complete turkey?

Also, why can't nvidia name their driver versions similarly to AMD, the year.month system is great.

If I remember correctly it's more of a update for enhanced 3D performance in certain titles. But the drivers are WHQL certified (whatever the fuck that means) so one would assume that they are ok to use. I haven't read about any performance gains from them, I've seen the exact opposite. Plus my own experience with them just made me stick with 275 for the time being.

Even my stock EVGA will do 915 @ stock voltages. It gets to 80c at 60% fan, but it'll do it, lol.

That's the difference!

I'll probably leave it at 950mhz or so for gaming but it's fun to keep messing with that slider to see how much more free performance you can get.

I could see myself going for broke with the slider if I need the extra performance in BF3. I don't think I'd ever up the voltage though. I think Nvidia already kind of went for the max in terms of voltages on the reference 580 design (which the lightning doesn't follow, if I remember correctly).

I couldn't find the pc health check program on the op.
Would you mind linking me to this program ?

I just noticed that my video card doesn't automatically switch from 2D mode to 3D mode when I launch a game. Does anyone know why that would happen? I could only use 3D mode settings if I apply them manually through ATI Tray Tools.

Your Current Specs: I will update this when I am on computer and not my laptop, but it's pretty out dated.
Budget: £500ish and United Kingdom.
Main Use: Gaming, Video editting. I'm going into Creative Digital Design at University.
Monitor Resolution: 1,920×1,080
List SPECIFIC games that you MUST be able to play: Battlefield 3, Skyrim and hopefully the games released in the next 3-4 years.
Are reusing any parts?: I'll be using:
Existing Tb HDD
Edimax EW-7612PIn 300Mbps Wireless 802.11 b/g/n PCI Express Adapter
CAIR 500W CMPSU-500CXUK PSU
When will you build?: Within the next month.
Will you be overclocking? When I've got an understanding I probably will.

I've not done much research yet but using the Falcon Guide I've outlined these parts@
Processor: Intel CPU Core i5 2400 Sandy Bridge Quad Core Processor
Mobo: MSI P67A-GD53 (B3)
GPU: 1GB EVGA GTX 560Ti DS Superclocked
Memory: Corsair Memory XMS3 8GB DDR3 1333 Mhz
Case: Cheap Case

I'm not rushing to buy these parts, this is just a rough idea of what I'm thinking of buying based on the Falcon Guide.

I'm also not 100% sure that the Mobo uses Single/Dual RAM or Triple RAM.

Nope, running everything stock actually. I just crashed again, but that was after 4 hours of solid play. And then windows actually said the driver had crashed. I really hope nVidia is going to get their drivers up to snuff in a few months.

if that happens with more games you might wanna run some (moderate) stress test on it for some time like Unigine Heaven 2.5 ...

also is the card a "factory overclock" model?

I'm interested in joining the master race. I haven't looked at PC components in a decade (been through a series of somewhat-researched laptops).

Your Current Specs: 3 Year old Dell Laptop
Budget: $1500 (USA)
Main Use: Gaming, Emulation (PS2/Wii if feasible, not a huge need), Video Encoding, general usage (Office, Web, 1080p playback)
Monitor Resolution: 1080p, no plans to upgrade anytime soon
Are reusing any parts?: Only speakers/mouse/keyboard/monitor.
When will you build?: I am not a patient man (ASAP).
Will you be overclocking?: If I can do it without opening the case.

Here is what I currently have in my cart (Amazon)

I'm a little overwhelmed and have some questions. Much love to anyone who can lend some clarity.

1. What's a good SSD in the 120GB range?
2. What's a good case? I was looking at this one. Will that fit my aftermarket cooler? Do I need to purchase any fans/cables/any other accessories? I'm open to any suggestions.
3. Any reason to go with an i7 2600k over the i5 2500k?
4. Is that power supply beefy enough? I don't plan on having more than one card. In addition to the SSD and WD Black drive, I do plan on having 2 to 4 green 2TB drives at some point in the future.
5. Is that RAM the best choice for 8GB? I don't mind paying a little more if something else will offer better performance.
6. Do I lose/gain anything by going with the above motherboard over the motherboard in the OP? (ASRock P67 EXTREME4 (B3) LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel)

Please feel free to tear down my setup and suggest any changes.

At PAX, coolermaster has new mechanical keyboards coming out. Cherry blacks and browns, and one is the same form factor as the happy hacker. Going to retail @ $80. Definately going to be the board to beat. Will post pics later.

Is it safe to have both ATI and nVidia drivers installed at the same time? I'm currently switching between my old 4850 and my GTX 460 and I don't want to install and uninstall all the time.

Uninstall CCC, turn off computer. Replace the 4850 with the 460. Turn on computer, install nvidia drivers. What's wrong with that?

I'm trying to find out what's causing these terrible lags every 60 seconds or so where my FPS go down to 10-20 in ANY game. It can't be something software related since formating didn't help.

That's very cool! Have people been reporting any bugs or reasons why people shouldn't upgrade? I'm using an M4 as my main OS drive and considering updating.

I haven't run an update for the M4 before, is there a chance I can lose the data on the drive? I read the update guide. If I change my drive from AHCI mode to IDE mode will it mess up my files/OS in any way? If I understand correctly, I change my drive to IDE, do the update, and then change it back to AHCI.
Updates are normally safe, but, since anything is possible, it's always good to backup your important files. I've never had issues going between different modes. YMMV, so again, play it safe. I haven't heard of any major M4 update issues, though I haven't gone through a great deal of posts.

I'm looking at the Thermalright Archon, seems like it is about on par with a Silver Arrow when you put a second fan on it. Anybody have any experience with it? I've seen a lot of good impressions (on par or better than SA with two fans), but some reviews aren't as favorable (middle of the pack high end cooler).

I'd prefer the single tower rather than a dual tower, which is why I'm wondering about it.
I haven't used a Thermalright Archon as the height, price (usually more than a Silver Arrow, even before adding a second fan), and inconsistent data haven't appealed to me. If mass isn't an issue, the Silver Arrow is still the one to beat, with the Prolimatech Genesis, and Noctua NH-D14 not far behind.

Aren't you planning on buying a 500R? I'd be concerned with the Archon's height clearing the side panel fan. With LGA 2011 nearing release, I can see the Archon, Prolimatech Armageddon, Corsair/Antec AIOs, and some other coolers becoming increasingly popular.

- AMD Bulldozer CPUs to be released shortly. Should do well in multi-threaded workloads.
- Consider stepping up to a 2500K (or, 2600K, if you can stretch). It's considerably better for your gaming and work/school (editing, encoding, etc.) needs.
- Mobo is dual channel.
- Case is fairly poor. Check out BitFenix Merc and OP $40 case options.
- GPU does not have lifetime warranty. Either switch to a different EVGA, or go with custom cooling: MSI TFII/III, Asus DCUII, Sparkle, Gainward Phantom, so on.

It's not a matter of convenience. If it doesn't cause any problems why would I keep installing and uninstalling drivers? Especially if it involves rebooting twice with every GPU switch.

Windows 7 allows multiple graphic drivers so it shouldn't be an issue. Personally, for very short time, I tried CF 6970 & Nvidia 9800GT for physx and it worked just fine. The extra heat and noise from 9800GT wasn't worth it.

1. I'd get a Corsair SSD GT (Sandforce 3 controller) Moderately priced with a rebate to boot from Newegg. 120GB is the sweet spot as Win7 takes up 50+ gigs + updates nowadays.

2. If you're going to be doing heavy gaming on it, i'd highly recommend a mid-tower to full tower case. I personally would want a full tower, so it future proof your case for years to come as GPU cards are getting bigger. Lian Li are great, quality cases. I'd go through these. Another good brand is Silverstone. You shouldn't need additional cables for your setup. All fans should be included in the case.

3. You should be fine with i5-2500k. Not much difference in gaming performance between the two cpu's.

4. You have plenty of power with your 750W Corsair PSU. You can even SLI it no problems.

5. You're good with the RAM.

6. Mobo is fine.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate installed and it takes ~25GB. A 60GB SSD is fine for Windows and your most used programs. You can't use it to install games ad/or as storage.

Got an overclocking question.

So I've got an MSI P67A-G43, and an i5 2500k. Trying to get some overclocking done, and following this guide:

http://www.clunk.org.uk/forums/overclocking/39184-p67-sandy-bridge-overclocking-guide-beginners.html

I left the Turbo Boost option on, as that seemed to be an okay recommendation. Just bumped the multiplier up to 36 to see if things would be stable. CPU-Z, though, is showing it staying at 3600 GHz core speed, even though Turbo Boost should be throttling it down when it's not under load. Before I overclocked it, that feature would take effect. Any ideas?

Also, should I leave the core voltage on auto, or manually setting it when I proceed with my overclocks? Now CUP-Z is showing a core voltage of 1.248V...should I turn that down for this current overclock, and then slowly bump it up a notch as needed? Or will the auto take care of it fairly well?

So, my PC is 8 years old and somewhat subpar, and in the last few years I've been doing my gaming from a laptop. Which now has some hardware failure of its own. That is to say:
Budget: Flexible, US (So. Cal - taxed by NewEgg, 1 hour from MicroCenter Tustin)
Main Use: Gaming, 1080p playback, comfy couch
Monitor Resolution: 1900x1080
When will you build?: Within a week or two
Will you be overclocking?: Yes, but not immediately.
I haven't been budgeting for long, so right now I can spend maybe $1k but the longer I wait the more I can add to that. The catch is that I get bored waiting.

Here's what I'm looking at:
CPU: i5 2500k (MicroCenter: $180)
Mobo: Z68 - Maximus IV Gene Z (NewEgg: $180)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws 8GB (2x4GB) 1600 (NewEgg: $55)
GPU: EVGA GTX570 (NewEgg: $320)
SSD: Crucial M4 128GB (NewEgg: $207)
HDD: TBD, will add later.

Case: Rosewill Challenger (NewEgg: $50)
PSU: Antec EarthWatts EA-650 650W (NewEgg: $60)

Comfy Couch:
HDMI Cable: 50ft (Monoprice: $40)
KB/M Stand: Dave (Ikea: $20)

I have a few questions still at this stage of planning:
What sort of cooling will I need?
How does one connect gamepads to a PC?
What's a good wired keyboard with keypad that also has a USB port for a wired mouse?
Even though I plan to do most of my gaming through my TV, what's a good-yet-cheap monitor for occasional use such as checking email or carting off to a friend's?

Any recommendations, changes, etc?
