Gaf, help me out if possible. I am experiencing lag and stuttering issue when playing Assassin's Creed II. My previous video card, a HD Radeon 6850 played it without any problems and now that I upgraded to a HD Radeon 6950 the problems starts to show up. My build is exactly the same when I had the HD Radeon 6850 except for the change of video card. Any advice is appreciated. I really want to finish the game, but I am so close to giving up on the game because of the lag and stuttering.

These new drivers seem great, unlike the 280.26 that almost blew up my pc :I

Temps are 1-3C lower
Just as stable, OC didn't crash during unigine
~3% increase in performance in ungine ( 1900 -> 1950 )

Gonna try hard reset demo again.

edit : also n0n44m told me the stuttering in deus ex has been fixed for him :O

ya the new beta drivers are great so far.

way better than the 280.26 whql ones.

i'm posting this in the safety of this thread, but am i the only person who thinks windows 8 is a step in the wrong direction? it just seems like its a dumb downed windows with the gimmick of the phone market thrown in.

Uninstall and reinstall the latest 11.8 drivers & 11.8 CAP3. Also, if the card is overclock (by you or factory), set it back to stock speed. Use MSI Afterburner to see GPU load and temps doing gaming.

Yo windows update :

Intel - Other hardware - Intel(R) Management Engine Interface

What is this? I can't access the additional details page.

Doing it now. How do I check if the card has been overclocked? I have the Asus branded 6950 and a gigabyte mobo so can I still use the MSI Afterburner?

Did you do a clean install, or just a upgrade?

The stock 6950 has 800mhz core and 1250mhz memory. You should be to see that in CCC. You can also use and see it in MSI Afterburner.

I totally just did the whole cooking your graphics card in the oven, and it worked. I had to use a 9600 gso because my 4870 had fucked out long ago, but its lookin good so far. just in time for RO2!

Is there a real difference between G.Skill Ripjaws X and G.Skill Ripjaws? The "X" claims it was specifically built for z68, and that it is Intel XMP certified, but the regular Ripjaws are $15 cheaper. Other than that, both seem identical (9-9-9-24, 1.5v, ect).

Ok, I ran into another problem. I uninstalled the driver, rebooted, and now when I try to install the driver again I get the "Application Install: Install Package failure!" message. I've tried to install it multiple times and the same message pops up.

Yeah but newer nvidia drivers have built in clean install option. Which is what I use. Frankly using ye old driver sweeper method etc has only created problems for me in the past. However this nvidia clean install option seem to be working perfectly.

Run the install, use the custom option, manually select all and try to install. If that doesn't work, google for AMD/ATI driver remove tool.

I believe Intel has update their drivers to support Trim in Raid. Even then, some controllers, Sandforce 2200, offers the same function without needing Trim.

Nope.
Intel's patch notes mean that TRIM was supported for the chipset when the chipset was in RAID mode, but TRIM is still only passed to disks that are NOT part of a RAID array.

And the automatic garbage collection many SSDs have are about as reliable as voodoo. You never know what exactly triggers them or how much good they actually do.

Ughhh, fuuuuuuck. My Vertex 2 just died again, and isn't recognized by my BIOS... These RMAs are killing me

I am convinced OCZ is run by a greasy, used car salesman. Their sandforce drives just don't fucking work, and the way the clowns at ocztechnologyforum.com offer "support" is infuriating. Just look at their "Basic" guide and FAQ. http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/f...E-amp-FAQ-ABC-for-OCZ-SSD&p=567552&viewfull=1

I did that and it didn't help. I'll google the tool and see what happens.

So I am thinking of getting a new video card. I am currently still rocking a 4890.

I have a Phenom quad core processor and a motherboard with only pci express 2.0x16. I noticed most new video cards are PCIE 2.1.

Any good suggestions on a solid newer GPU on pcie 2.0 that can give solid performance at 1080p? I imagine pcie 2.1 cards do not work in 2.0 slots.

Or am I better off spending an extra hundred on a new mother board as well?

Thanks, I had to manually remove the C++ Microsoft file and use the custom setting to change the ATI folder location name. I installed the driver and CAP3 and now Assassin's Creed II runs very smoothly. Thanks.

quick question, can i put 2 ram stick in triple channel motherboard or do i need 3 sticks to make it work ?
You can use 2 sticks, but you won't get triple channel memory bandwidth which would be a performance hit. Since ram is pretty cheap these days, little reason to not go 3 sticks.

My 570 drivers keep crashing. It did it quite a bit in Deus Ex now it does it even when not in a game. They recover but it's really annoying losing all picture and waiting for it to recover. Should I just reinstall then?
Which card is it? I have the Asus GTX570 DirectCU II and it was regularly crashing in Deus Ex in DX11 mode. Asus released a BIOS update for the DirectCU II (and their standard GTX570) in July to resolve this exact issue. It ups the default voltage from 1.000 to 1.025. Not a single DX11 crash for me since.

I am about to give up on my GTX580 and 2600K gaming PC.
I am sick and tired of the stuttering in deus ex:HR and fallout new vegas and other games, I have tried everything and have had enough of tweaking configs and ini's to get them to run properly.
I am pretty sure BF3 will be the same. As much as I love batman:AA compared to the console version, I can see myself selling up and going back to console.
I can understand why devs and publishers throw everything at the console versions but it's getting ridiculousm my £ is just as good as the next persons.
My apologies for this unforeseen outburst. I left my computer running with Gaf on display while I nipped out for work and a workmate/friend saw an opportunity to troll.
After reading some of the replies, I am sure he would be happy with the results.
My sincerest apologies to anyone offended or put out, I will post a shit in a box to his address on your behalf.
I can't believe he added the PC gaming is dying quote.

My question here is... Is there anything immediately apparent to you guys of potential problems/bad parts?

Im at the lower end of my budget, would there be anything to consider changing/upgrading?

Thanks in advance.
Hate to quote my own post here, but im looking for further information from anyone who would be willing to take time and look at my build idea.

Thanks again :).

Thermal paste Q

What is the best way/method to apply thermal compound on Hyper 212+, one dot, two dots, or two lines on the heat sink?

Also I heard that the Coolermaster Thermal Compound Kit is not good, but after searching itturn there is a 1.3 something degree difference between it and Antec 5 ( which I was going to buy) is 1.3 degrees difference really matter that much?

I believe that RAM is 1.65V - switch it out with something that's rated for 1.5V.

No I think that's the case too, Windows was fine how it is but we'll see how it turns out.

Question. Right now I have a Phenom II 955 Black Edition and a MSI Twin Frozr 560Ti.

Which of these upgrades is going to give me the best bang for my buck and performance increase. I can afford to do 1 upgrade but not both.

Option 1 - Upgrade the cpu to an i7 2600k = $400 - 450ish w/ new mobo
Option 2 - Upgrade the video card to a 580 = $450 - 500ish

What do yall recommend? Which is the bigger performance leap over its predecessor?

Can somebody tell me if these temperatures are okay? I'm not sure I put Mugen 2 on correctly because I couldn't really tighten the screws (or is that normal?).

296n5mo.jpg

Core i5-2500K @ stock
Scythe Mugen 2 rev b
Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3
Kingston HyperX KHX1600C9D3X2K2/8GX
XFX Radeon HD 6870 Dual Fan 1GB
CoolerMaster Silent Pro Gold 600W
Western Digital 500GB Caviar Blue 6GB

In a really old Kingwin case with only two 80mm fans in the front and one 120mm in the back.

Anyone have any recommendations for buying a pre-built? Yes, I know - build my own. I used to but those days are over. No time and I am willing to pay for the convenience! Anyway, I am not looking for a $4000 beast of a machine, but I'd like to spend $1500 or less. Maingear looks pretty good - at the very least, the cases are not retarded "gamer" cases.

velocity micro was good a few years back when I was looking for one. Never used them though.

It seems I can go for a GTX560Ti 1GB for about $200-225 if I watch it a bit. I think that should be a fair upgrade right?

I don't need a new PC, but figured someone here might be able to help:

I have a 5770 ATI card with currently one 1920x1080p screen hooked up. If I want to do multi-monitor gaming - what do I need? I can get two smaller screens for a pittance, but those will be 1280x1024 I believe. Will this work? Do I need some sort of adapter?

my Mugen 2 had about the same temps on 2600K @ 4.7ghz ~1.33v

so for stock settings it's a bit high in my opinion ... what is your room temperature?

What are gaf's opinions on sound card? I'm currently using the onboard audio on my Gigabyte GA-880GA-UD3H mobo and rocking my Tritton 5.1 Dolby Digital headset. I will only consider getting a sound card if the sound will be exponentially better than the one on my mobo.

I'd say if you're in a room around about 73-75 degrees that's normal. Anything at 71 degrees or lower and you should be around 32/29/26/24 on a 2500k. But it's nothing to worry about, what are your load temps?

Only thing you can do is re-seat the CPu and reapply paste, and see if that helps. But it really all depends on your room temperature and what it looks like under load.

I have no idea but I don't think it's too high, certainly not above 23° Celsius.

I'm wondering if it's my old case or that they Mugen isn't placed correctly. I think I will clean the CPU and try again just to be sure. Thanx!

No real performance hit on normal desktop use. There's some article about it somewhere.

If you can pay for Maingear that is a fine choice. I think Falcon Northwest is also fairly good.

If you don't care about warranty I can build and ship it for less :p

From a 880 UD3 board...
Might want to give the Xonar DG a shot for $20. The amp should help you out.

That motherboard if its anything like the P67A-C45 (at least both share the same layout) the chipset will overheat alot unless you have an excellent airflow because the chipset will be covered by the graphics card, having so little space between both it will easily reach 90C (105C being the max according to intel).
