The people behind this thread have invested alot of time in the OP, the least you can do is to start by reading that since it answers these basic questions of yours. :)

That being said...just had my Vertex 1 fail, one month after my laptop's OCZ Agility 1 failed. Looks like the same problem on both - firmware dies and BIOS can't see anything anymore. I guess it's never too early for some vodka...

I agree, my Intel has held for 8 months so far. Fingers crossed.

I did. I'm considering the "Standard" with a monitor, but it doesn't meet BF3's recommended specs. Maybe I should just get a 6950 instead of the 6850 and buy it anyway?

okay%20with%20words.png

It's worth it if your car gets decent gas mileage, IMO. Make a fun trip out of it and go with a buddy or GF and grab a decent lunch somewhere new. It's an adventure, and you'll get a 580 for at least $100 cheaper than you will anytime soon.

My Zotac 570 that I just got from MC may run hot as hell right now; but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't in love with the performance. Somehow makes my 5870 seem slow. Not bad for about $200 after all is said and done.

well of course it won't magically meet any requirement from upcoming games like bf3. With that said, yes a 6950 is recommended for the game so I'm guessing that's a good choice.

Keep in mind that the i3 is dual core, and I have no idea how it'll affect bf3. Since it looks like the game favors quads.

Im about to buy the Asus VG236HE and i was wondering if i would see a big difference in gaming because of the 120hz?
Also since i have ati cards, will i be able to watch 3D movie's? Because i assume the nvidia 3d kit wont work so i need something else?

BIG thanks to those of you who helped me out last night with my decision.

I ended up realizing a few things. 1) The deal on the 570 was just too good to pass up, 2) That SLI is currently out of the question with my current mobo 3) I'll likely do a completely new build in about a year or so.

So, I decided on keeping it as cheap as possible since I'll likely be changing things on a much larger scale in 12 months. I went with the Zotac "AMP!" factory OC'd 570 to replace my AMD 5870.

Heck of a deal: $379 MSRP; on sale for $309. 20% off coupon = $269 AFTER tax. Plus a $30 rebate PLUS Batman Arkham City + Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. I plan to sell the Batman AC key for $35 (which, if you want that, shoot me a PM), which means at the end of the day I got this card for about $205 and got a free copy of Ass.Creed.Bro. I should be able to sell my 5870 for that.

Anyway, finally got rid of the AMD stuff, got it installed, updated, and played. I loaded up BFBC2 for a while. Like I said, on my old card, I'd hover in the 50s, with a few dips to the 40s, and a rare dip to the high 30s. With the 570, I doubled the AA (16 -> 32), and hovered in the 70s, with the rare dip to the 50s! Incredible. Awesome, awesome performance at 1080p.

HOWEVER:

I was playing some BFBC2 when my game started stuttering all over the place. Was un playable almost. I checked temps, and they were at 100D Celsius  ! I immediately shut down my computer and inspect if there is a problem in my case. I quickly come to realize I'm an idiot; the cooler fan is in a completely different location that on my 5870, and so it was smashed up against my sound card.  So, for the time being, I've just removed my sound card, and went back to playing. No more stuttering! Yay!!

That said, my card still seems to idle at like 50-53c, and when gaming, it hits nearly 100% load constantly as I never use V-sync, and temps get into the high 90s. Now, I'm not saying my cooling in my case is great by any means, but I know my 5870 stayed much lower than that. So, should I assume this might be a tad deffective? Card seems to run fine, and the fan cranks up to full load (85) when I'm playing... but that just seems ridiculously high even for a "factory OC'd" (lulz) card. Should I drive the 1h30m to switch it out with another? I'm leaning toward yes.
Maximum Operating Temperature is 97C, so you're instinct is probably right — http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0371742

I swear I'm not just saying that to increase my chance of you traveling back / getting me a card... hahah

ive got a Radeon 6850 and a 520w seasonic power supply, i was thinking of upgrading to a gtx 570 for BF3 or doing Crossfire w/ another 6850. The build list on the OP says a 550w power supply is what you need for a gtx 570 so I am wondering if I can still use my old power supply for that.
The Seasonic 520W is a very very good supply. No worries on that at all.
I ran a GTX 295 on the rebranded Corsair version of it.

SSDs are great now and at or below mechanical HDD failure if you buy a good one (Intel/Crucial/Samsung(?))

just got a gaming laptop that i'm pretty satisfied with so far, but it has brought to my attention a desperate need to accessorize my main desktop now. so gaf...

i need a new keyboard. i play a lot of games on my PC so i want it to be good for that, but i also want it to be a chiclet keyboard, because i have seen the light and i can no longer go back. i actually like the keyboard on my laptop more than my desktop, and that's fucked up.

i'm also taking this opportunity to buy a new mouse. i'm pretty committed to the rat 7 at this point, just because i can customize it until it's comfortable and that makes me feel less stressed about buying it. i'll be pulling the trigger on that purchase soon unless someone here says otherwise.

also, now that i have a pretty good portable gaming experience, i need a portable mouse to go with it. does anyone have any recommendations for that? i'm hesitant to just throw the rat 7 in my bag and take it with me, firstly because it's wired, and second i'm afraid it'll get crushed under the laptop or something. i'd like a wireless mouse for the sake of convenience, but i've heard there's some noticeable latency there that ruins gaming.

any recommendations would be helpful!

I would suggest this for the desktop mouse

Will running "two" displays in clone mode impact the performance of my GPU?

I have two in quotes because I'm really only using one monitor. I have a HDMI Capture Card installed in my computer, with my DVI Cable running from my GTX 570 to my monitor, and an HDMI cable running from the 570 to the capture card. The card thinks it's a second display, and I have it set as a clone of my actual monitor.

Will this impact performance at all?

Clone mode very minimal.

Just placed an order on newegg for what is listed as the Enthusiast pc in the OP, except I'm going for the i5. My u2711 has been waiting for this for a long time!

All i've seen are complaints and more complaints. The technical reviews are great but there are so many user complaints that it just isn't worth the expense, nor the risk... at least not for me.

If you don't avoid the garbage HDD's you're going to run into the same issues as if you don't avoid the garbage SSDs.

Do you see people rave about their HDDs? You put the SSD in and you go 'wow this is great' and that is that.

If it fails you get complaints.
That is why the Intel's have been and continue to be recommended.

The M4's seem alright if you don't get a bad one. Rate seems in line with HDD DOA/errors.

As long as you have an SSD it's all good. I'm not completely sold on 500MB/s vs 300MB/s read speed. Extra write is nice though.

The non-garbage HDD's are still hundreds less than a good SSD and you lose most of your storage with an SSD.

Even then they may find errors in the BIOS, firmware or other bugs further down the line. I've had a good track record with my Western Digital drives and the performance is fine for what i pay.

At home and at work i still would not trust an SSD. I'm not saying that i will never move to one. I just won't do it right now.

Buy one reliable SSD (Intel, Crucial, w/e) and one 1TB HDD. Store anything of real importance on the HDD and an internet storage site like Dropbox.

So spend a few hundred on a piece of equipment that doesn't improve my gaming experience by any meaningful amount, definitely not a few hundred dollars difference.

I'm sure it's nice when opening chrome but it's not like it takes a long time for that to open.

Like i said - for me it's not worth the price and risk.

For people that want the absolute fastest no matter what, SSD's are great for them.

Your Current Specs: None
Budget: $800 - $1000
Main Use: Gaming, general use
Monitor Resolution: 1080p (HDTV), not upgrading, hoping for 60fps
List SPECIFIC games that you MUST be able to play: Skyrim, RAGE, Battlefield 3, Batman: Arkham City
Are reusing any parts?: None to reuse
When will you build?: 1-2 months
Will you be overclocking?: Nope

First time building a PC so I thought I'd ask for some advice. I'd like to use a small form factor case so the computer won't look out of place next to the TV. This is what I've come up with so far:

CPU: Intel i3-2100 ($125 - $10 discount)
Cooler: Stock
MB: Intel DH67CFB3 mini-ITX ($120)
RAM: Corsair XMS3 8GB (4GB x 2) 1333mhz ($50 - $25 combo discount w/PSU)
GPU: MSI 560 ti HAWK w/Batman coupon ($260 - $20 rebate)
PSU: Corsair HX650 Modular ($120 - $20 rebate)
HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB ($60)
DVD: Samsung SH-B123L blu ray read-only, DVD & CD read/write ($65)
Case: Lian-Li PC-Q08B ($110)
Total with Windows 7 = ~$950

I've also considered a using the following parts for a cheaper build:

MB: Asus P8H61-I mini-ITX ($80)
RAM: G.Skill 4GB (2GB x 2) 1333mhz ($30)
GPU B: MSI 560 ti Twin Frozr II w/Batman ($245 - $20 rebate)
GPU C: MSI 6870 Twin Frozr II w/Deus Ex ($199 - $20 rebate)
PSU: Antec BP550 ($80 - $25 rebate)

Any suggestions? I'm particularly concerned with the small case and managing heat/noise. Thanks!

Case shouldn't be a problem its pretty big as far as miniITX goes. I built a similar build in a Sliverstone SG-08 with a 560Ti Twin Frozr and temps were fine. You'll get 60fps on almost all current games but BF3 will have to have lowered settings.

So this has probably been answered before but shoot me for not reading over 280 pages, what is the current verdict on wireless mice/keyboards? Have they improved much lag wise in the last 3-4 years since the last time I bothered looking around? or do good ol' wired ones still blow them out the water?

Finally got everything built and put in the case. Build was perfect except for trouble with the 560Ti TwinFrozr II that I got from Microcenter. Screen would always give me "no signal" when connected to the card and windows wasn't recognizing anything in the slot (fresh install, no early drivers). Tried both PCI slots, but nothing. Put in my old 8800 and both slots were working and the screen gave a signal. Ultimately determined the card was just DOA, went to Microcenter today and they made the swap for a new one painless and easy. New card works like a charm... just hope it doesn't crap out on me later on before BF3/Skyrim.
On another note: any good tutorials for overclocking the 2500k/graphics card?

Did you follow the one in the OP? While I've never used it, Clunk's beginners' overclocking guides have been among the most popular for at least the last three generations of Intel processors.

You sure he can fit a 560ti in that case? It looks a bit small for a lengthy card.

If that is all he is doing look at an ultra slimline tower from dell/hp/ect. Priced cheaper than you can build really, just make sure to get a modern processor.

And your link doesn't show up for me.

Here's the correct link:

GPU is overkill. You can delete it, and run the iGPU. Alternatively, look for a sub-$100 option like an Nvidia GT 520/AMD 64xx/65xx/66xx, or previous generation equivalent.

Case wise, you can do better for $40. Try one of the suggestions from the OP.

Q08 + Gigabyte GTX 560 Ti Super Overclock. It's longer than the majority of 560 Tis.

Am I screwed out of a rebate?

Purchased an XFX 6850 earlier in the month, and there was a rebate going on at the time. Seems like the rebate ended on the 15th, though I'm sure I have 30 days until after the purchase date to postmark everything. However, I went to go print out the form right now and there's a new one in place. Is there any way I can print the old form?

Ah ok, cool. Are the Twin Frozr's considered good and reliable? I have only bought EVGA/PNY in the past.

Not sure about reliable (my first one was DOA), but they are known for their overclocking ability and cooler. If you want true reliability I'd personally go with EVGA. I was originally going to go with them.

What site did you buy it from? I believe certain sites keep prior rebate forms up even if there is a new one. If you can't find it, I would suggest going to slickdeals.net and searching for your purchase there and see if anyone saved a copy of the rebate form in a thread.
