"I need a New PC!" 2011 Thread of reading the OP. Seriously. [Part 2]

I know I'm going out on a limb with this, but anyone know how to unlock the BIOS on a Gateway DX4850? Ive got a spanking new Core i5 2300 that's begging to be bumped up but my BIOS won't let me, of course...

I've pretty much exhausted google myself looking.

Hey!
So I just advised a friend on what components to get for a new pc build since he was going from a very old Dell pc with no graphics card and Macbook pro for gaming.
I went ahead and got him a Core i5 2500K and ATI HD6950 card along with 8gb ram and everything else.
Now It got me considering upgrading my 3-3.5 year old build and whether I should go all out and get an entire new pc, or just upgrade the graphics card. Here is my current pc build from memory (since I'm away from home and on my laptop)

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (stock speed)
GPU: AMD ATI HD4850 (stock speed)
RAM: 4gb DDR2
PSU: 550w cooler master

The games I'm playing seem to run fine at 1680x1050 and on my 1080p tv. Last I played were Bulletstorm, Crysis 2, Deus Ex: HR (this one was causing visible framerate drops) and tried out the battlefield 3 beta which ran well.

Here are my options:
Should I overclock, and if so, where should I start? I'm knowledgeable about it, but every time I attempt, I constantly have system instability and it really annoys me.

Should I swap out the HD4850 512mb in favor of a newer card like GTX560/GTX560Ti/6950?

Should I build a new pc?
I was kind of hoping to avoid this since I'm still happy with the performance I'm getting on most games and generally game on my 360/PS3 for many games anyways.

Please advise me :)

Thank you

If you have video card(s) that blows heat around inside the case, you better have good in - out airflow. With that case you don't, it only has 1 small exhaust fan.

Yep. I was a young one in the game and this is my first build so I wasn't (and in some areas stillnot lol) all that knowledgeable about cooling etc. The FT02 is a great case and I love mine dearly. The one exhaust up top is only thing I don't like, but everything else is sweet to me.

I know your having problems with it, but that is a dream setup right there.

I actually haven't had that many problems. Temps in the 80-85 range are norm and I'm fine with that. When it hits 90+ like it was I start questioning things. Like I mentioned earlier though I cleaned the filters from the 3 180mm fans at the bottom. I also have 2/3 180mm fans running at High instead of their default Low position. Haven't seen 90+ temps since then.

And thanks for the kind words!

Well more GPU RAM is always necessary if you're playing at higher resolutions. I'd recommend an upgrade to the GPU first. What sort of budget are you aiming for?

It definitely depends; if I'm going for a graphics card upgrade, I'd say about $200-ish.
If I'm going to build a new pc, it'll be $1K (but i feel i really dont need this...)

Upgrade the GPU and go from there. It'll definitely add more life into your setup. I recently upgraded mine and it's like a whole new computer. If you have some spare money leftover I'd suggest looking into an SSD.

Ok PC Gaf... I've got one for you. I recently installed another EVGA GTX 580 into my PC. I'm running the Battlefield Beta drivers and have had no problems so far. However, every time I turn on my PC it defaults to the integrated graphics and can't detect the cards. If I simply restart the PC, it comes back on as it should. Any ideas? Its not a huge problem, but having to restart the PC every time I turn it on is kind of a hassle. Thanks!

Specs:
Asus P8P67 Pro
i2500k
EVGA GTX 580 SLI
16Gb Crosair Vengeance Ram
Corsair 1000HX PSU

Can't the air exhaust by the PCI slots, though? The whole idea with the FT02 is that you really don't need exhaust fans, since the positive pressure and hot air in the case with naturally expell the air upwards anyways.

What say you (or anyone else for that matter) about going with a GTX 560?
its $200 on amazon and they are having a promo where you get Batman Arkham City for free.
Obviously its not as good as the 560ti but its still about $60-100 cheaper.
Will it be a very significant upgrade over the HD4850 when playing at 1680x1050?

GTX 560 card

BTW, if anyone is getting an NVidia card with an Arkham City code and doesn't want it, I'd take it off their hands for $30.

GTX 560 card

edit: whoa I was wayyyy off. Sorry. GTX 560 is more like 70% faster than a 4850.

So anyways, $200 will get you a ~70% performance increase, while $250 will get you closer to 110% performance increase. The GTX 560 Ti is a better buy, if you can manage the extra $50.

1 - With the H60, the current fan is mounted on the back of the case label facing out. Should I mount the second fan with the label also facing out or do I want it the other direction?
2 - Basically the same question with the 140mm. Do I want it oriented the same way as the existing fan?
3 - I've never added fans before. How do I get these powered?

which integrated graphics does it claims to detect?

because P8P67 = p67 chipset = no integrated graphics support

Oh wow, ok so thats a pretty solid performance increase just on the GPU alone. I guess for the $200-$300 its a great improvement as opposed to buying all new components and replacing CPU/mobo etc...

Yea the $50 isnt the issue, I just don't want to spend uselessly because sometimes I feel I don't really need it since the majority of what I play is on consoles anyways...but then again, if i can get games visibly more beautiful on PC, that could sway my gaming tendencies

I had a very similar system as you. Only difference was i had a 9800GT. This is what i did. I bought a 560 Ti, and OC'd my CPU to 2.9 GHz. The thing is running Battlefield 3 on high/ultra with around 45-60 FPS @1080p. Im happy that it only cost me $240 to extend the life of my desktop for another 1-2 years.

That sounds pretty excellent!
Do you have a good guide you followed for the overclocking? Because every time I follow one I always run into performance/stability issues and end up reverting to stock speed.

No guide really. My motherboard was a horrible one that needed a bios flash to OC. 2.9 GHz was the highest i could get without running into problems. Again, my mobo is not that great. But yeah, even if you keep a stock q6600, go for a 560 Ti, its really a damn good card and it comes with free Batman:Arkham City game.

Has anyone used a generic usb bluetooth receiver with a Giotek bluetooth PS3 headset?

I want to know if it works properly or not for online communications.

Haha... you're right. I'm running in a super low resolution (1200x800) and under device manager both of my cards have a yellow exclamation point next to them. EVGA Precision says: No Compatible Hardware Detected. If I right click and check out their properties I see: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43). Any ideas?

So I take it that the general opinion that getting a custom built PC from a place like Alienware is a no-no?

Way over priced. They are good machines if you really have zero other options, but you do. Building one is so easy, anyone can do it. There are youtube videos showing you how to install anything and everything. And of course you can post any questions here. Maybe you even live near a gaffer who would be willing to come show you how it's done.

haven't seen anyone encounter that before ...

It only happens after a cold boot? And fixes itself when you reboot? How about enabling/disabling the cards in device manager? What happens when you remove the SLI bridge (kills performance but SLI should still work) ? Also flash the motherboard bios to the latest version.

Yup, only after a cold boot and restart always fixes it. If I disable then enable the cards in device manager it fixes it. I haven't tired removing the bridge. The mobo bios is up to date. Yeah, truly stumped.

I've been trying to overclock my intel 2500 (not the k version) and it only goes up to a 41 multiplier. Then there is this turbo mode bullshit where it changes the speed if more than 1 core is running. And when I try to change these values it just changes them back to these:
core 0 = 4.0
core 1 = 3.9
core 2 = 3.8
core 3 = 3.7

does anyone know if there is a way to turn that off and just have a steady 4.1 ghz on all cores?

I meant to buy the 2500k, but mistakenly got the 2500. it hasn't been 30 days yet so I'm thinking about returning it to amazon and get a 2500k. Is the performance boost up to 4.5 GHz worth the trouble?

You need a K CPU to be able to change the multiplier higher than 3. And, yes, it's worth it for 4.5GHz on all 4 cores. If you switch, make sure you also have a MB that allows overclocking, P67 or Z68.

Hey guys so I was following that P67 Guide to over clocking sandy bridge CPUs. Got it to 4ghz fine yesterday so I decided to try and get to 4.5 ghz today and I mean it runs fine but my pc is randomly freezing and I have to shut it down from the power button. I think it might be the CPU voltage, I tried 1.30 and 1.27 but it still freezes. I have a CPU cooler that can handle overclocking.

Any suggestions guys?

Try 4.4 on stock voltage.

It probably needs more voltage. Try 1.35V, and then, run Prime95 for 15 min. If it doesn't crash, try lowering it by 0.010V and retest. If it works, keep lowering it by 0.010V until it crashes. Then, increase by 0.005V and retest until it passes for a few hours. At that point, you have found the correct voltage for that speed.

Try a bit more voltage, I wasn't stable at 4.5 until I hit 1.305. Your CPU might end up needing more. Also keep an eye on the CPU voltage when you start your stress test. If you see it dip down and stay a but under your intended setting, you need to bump up your LLC setting. I had to bump mine up to 75% for 4.5@1.305 to be stable.

After doing some looking, I think I may have answered #3 on my own. My motherboard (Gigabyte Z68A-D3H-B3) has two SYS_FAN jumpers. Thing is, I am pretty sure they are both being used. I assume I just get a couple of splitters to add the extra two fans?

Hi guys, wanted to get a new graphic card (and add some more ram). Right now I have a GeForce 9800GTX 512mb but i would like to pump that shit up so I can play with amazing graphics games like The Witcher 2 and future games with a good frame rate. I also do my gaming in 1080p.

Even if I want a powerfull card I would like that the price doesnt go insane, something like 500 dollars being the max.

Ive seen some graphic cards in the OP and it seems GTX570 and GTX580 are some good choices. Is there much difference in one and the other that ups the price 100$? And will I notice much difference between my current card and this ones?
Also whats the difference between this cards and the ones ive seen with insane high prices?

Thanks in advance.

Is Micro Center known to have good Black Friday sales? I'm not in a huge rush for my upgrades. If I can save around $100 or so by waiting until then, that's the route I want to go.

Need to upgrade from my 19" Hannspree. What is the "best" monitor in like the ~$150 - ~$200 range? It's going to be soon, but not like today or tomorrow. If there are any known monitors on the horizon, that's worth pointing out, too. Like if there are significant deals on Black Friday for monitors, then I'll wait until then.

Just got a spare desk and decide once I get my new monitor I'll hook up my PS3 or X360 and play games on that. Won't even have to get up to play anymore.

Have to check off a new monitor and laptop and I'm done with all these pricey purchases.

Just sent out my rebate request form to XFX. How long can I expect to wait until I receive a reply?

Has anyone had to do a RMA with Corsair directly? I have opened two cases, I think... but have not received a single email confirmation or contact. No mail has gone to my junk or spam folders either.

First opened a ticket last Thursday morning.

edit: apparently, my ticket exists and I was assigned a Password but i definitely was not contacted about it. I entered in my ticket number and was mailed the password.

On 29 September I bought a Gigabyte Radeon 6850 in Micro Center's store and I'm trying to request my rebate. The rebate on MC's website is now eligible between 3 October and 30 October and on Gigabyte's website only October is an option. Did I already lose it?

What's your CPU? Wouldn't want to upgrade too far ahead of it. That being said, the GTX 570 should be about 2.5-3 the speed of your 9800. 580 is another 15% faster than the GTX 570.

Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q 6600 @ 2.40GHz

Went this summer to the store where I build my computer the first time, asking about upgrading all, but the guy there told me I had a still a pretty good CPU, and it wasnt as important to upgrade it.
Now, I dont know if it was the truth. He was not very collaborative (thats why I have been so much time without doing the change) and when I went the first time to build my computer there was another one that was much more nicier, and was the one that helped me building it and let me say I have been very happy with my computer.

Ill probably go tomorrow to buy the GTX580, ive read some reviews today and it seemed quite good. But it would help if you told me if the thing about my CPU is what the store guy said.

Ok so here is the setup that i've constructed from this thread and others recommendations, can anyone check it to make sure its all compatible and will be good for a few years playing everything on maximum. I want to be able to play everything at 60fps for a few years with minimal upgrades on a single monitor.

I already have some 640gb caviar black hard drives but I want to buy 1 or 2 SSD's for the OS and other things but i'm not sure which ones are best. Does anyone have any recommendations for this build?

And also case. Which case should I go for in this build. I have that huge heatsink and huge videocard so i'm not sure which cases will fit it all. I'm looking for something that will keep it the most cool and silent thats under $300. Does anyone have any suggestions?

And am I missing anything? Is there anything I should know? Should I wait a few weeks for a pricedrop or anything? I'm not in a super hurry.

And also any recommendations for a new monitor for this build?

Its still a good CPU. If you can get someone to help you, or watch some youtube guides, i would recommend you overclock it to 2.9 or 3.0GHz. I have the same CPU, and i OC'd mine to 2.9 GHz. I also bought a 560 Ti and now my desktop is playing new games extremely well.
