that's fine. The motherboard will often have more holes than the case to allow for many case designs.

Pretty sure I've mounted my motherboard on only 4 of the 8 holes, too...

Thanks! I was scared to continue, cause I didn't want to fuck everything up.

Which of these are the best headset?

Roccat Kave

Turtle Beach Earforce PX22

I need to use it for games basically. I would like to have atmosphere in horror games, and bang in action/shooter games. I also want it a little bit for chatting in games like Rust and other such games.

Don't get the Roccat Kave.
Only because its uncomfortable.
Those 3 little square pads where your head goes don't evenly distribute the weight of the headset.
In my experience all of the weight becomes concentrated on the middle pad, causing extreme discomfort and pain after as little as 30 minutes of use. With longer use you will be left with a headache/migraine.

When speaking with Roccat all they could do was tell me that the headset is too big for my head.... I didn't know headsets came in different sizes...

OK really stupid question.

So far i've been using my Asus Rog Front Base to connect my headphones but for some reason it's now buzzing.

$_35.JPG

If i want to connect just the headphones to the back on the motherboard onboard sound headphone output, which colour is it? I'm assuming it's the line out, which is the green:

I have the Asus Maximus Formula 6 Motherboard. Here's a pic:

line.jpg

It says there something about a headphone amp. Is that just something that will work if i plug it in to the green port (if the green one is the correct one!?)

Cheers guys!

Ok PcPartPicker still hasn't upgraded entirely so I'll post pics from my cart in new egg.
NO GPU because I'm waiting at the moment. This will not be used for gaming yet, but I want it to be ready to do 3D rendering as soon as possible (the program doesn't do gpu rendering anyhow).

This is what I was looking at yesterday: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2CYsVn

Would I be better off with the previous setup, and go for 32 gigs of ddr3 ram?

It's the green line out, yeah.

Also make sure to set it to Stereo Headphone in the Realtek Control Panel. Works better for headphones (no surprise there, I guess)

Welp, just ordered most of my next gaming setup.

I7-4790k
Cooler Master Nepton 280L (Until water blocks for GPU's come out, then going to go custom water cooling)
Asus Maximus VII Formula
SLI GTX 880's (When they are released)
16GB G.Skill Trident X 2400
Corsair AX1200i
Samsung 850 256GB
Samsung Evo 500GB

Phanteks Enthoo Luxe
6x Corsair SP120 High Performance Fans (When I get the water cooling stuff, gonna get a fan controller for these things as I imagine they are gonna be fairly loud without them).
1x Corsair AF140
Mionix Naos 7000 Mouse
Cooler Master Quickfire TK Cherry Reds

What I'm coming from:

I5-750
Asus P7P55D
8GB's of RAM
GTX 670
Corsair TX650
256GB Seagate HDD
1TB Samsung HDD
HAF-X
Razer Blackwidow Blues (Will use this whenever I need to type if I don't like doing it on new keyboard)
Razer Naga (I've had so many problems with this mouse, glad to be getting rid of it).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was going to go with a 5820K and X99 Mobo/Ram but the prices weren't really worth it here in Canada. I had the money for it, but decided to put the extra cash towards a 1440p monitor instead.

My pc is back up and running...except one my 8GB G Skill RAM sticks is bust, thanks Corsair.

Should be okay on 8GB for a while. Got it nice and stable (I just do 15 runs of intel burn test at max).

Just the last issue of that ram stick -_-

And updating about 20 games at 250KB/s (thanks virgin media).

I was hoping that new steam icon was for mac only...
But it's good to be back!!

Nope, new Steam icon made it's way to Linux in the most recent update as well.

A 1200W PSU is way way overkill for SLI setups. Get a SuperNOVA 750G or something. You also don't need 7 fans but w/e, I guess fans and cooling are a fun toy to mess around with, they just won't really do you much. Nice setup otherwise.

Just finished building my very first pc (i7 4790k, NH-D15 on a Gigabyte GA-Z97X, 16 gigs and for the time being, waiting for my oculus rift to arrive, I'm using on board graphics, yeah, I know XD), and I had a great time. Everything seems smooth but...
I just tried Prime95 (no oc yet) for a couple of minutes and rapidly stopped it because temps reached 100ºC. There's something wrong, isn't there?

If you aren't overclocking it sounds like your NH-D15 isn't on fully...or possibly the fans got disconnected (maybe they are facing each other - wind direction wise although 100 is a bit much).

Oddly enough, I installed a D-15 today as well.

Those two screws of it are a bit fiddly to get in the right area...but once they are screwed in it should be really locked to the cpu, tight.
You remembered to apply thermal paste (just checking)?

My default vcore voltage for the 3.5GHz stock (at auto) was more than it is now for 4.4GHz.

You still need a GPU. The xxx-E lines from Intel have no iGPU built-in.

Corsair CX units aren't great either.

Drop the thermal paste, cooler comes with it's own.

What are you planning on doing for the GPU? The 5960X's I've seen pull 360+W. 600W may not be enough for some single GPUs even. If you're not planning on going dual GPU, why 5930K? 5820K is the same CPU only with less PCI-E lanes. Are you planning on overclocking the CPU? If so, I don't think air will be able to get rid of enough heat.

Yes, I did, a drop of paste the size of a cooked rice grain. I definitely think I got the two screws right, nice and tight.
Could it be that I messed with the pull/push set up? I have a Define R4.

Sorry i should have rephrased my question in line with the OT

Your Current Specs:
No Specs, been using a laptop last 3 years
Budget: £600 UK $1000

Main Use: Rate 1-5. 5 being Highest:
Autocad 5
Gaming 5,
Video Editing 4,
Streaming games 4
General Usage 3 (Word, Web, 1080p playback).
It cannot make tons of noise.

Monitor Resolution:
I havent had a monitor in a while, this will need to be included in the price, 17'' would be fine, not altogether bothered with quality.

List SPECIFIC games or applications that you MUST be able to run well: Is 30FPS acceptable? 60? 120? How important is PhysX / SuperSampling / CUDA to you?
Fifa 15 is a must, 100% (30fps acceptable) (it is a new engine on the pc, quite hardware intensive)
League of Legends
Hearthstone
Ideally it would be nice to be able to run Hammer well, the Valve devkit
I am not a hardcore graphics enthusiast, i would just like to be able to run games and do other things while they are in windowed mode.

Looking to reuse any parts?: List make and model (e.g. Corsair 520HX, 640GB SATA HDD, Antec 900)
I have no parts to reuse sadly

When will you build?: Do you have a deadline?
22nd September

Will you be overclocking?: Yes, No, Maybe (This means yes!)
Not at all

Overclocking is easy Cola, this build can do it bar needing a new cooler. That could be a £20 investment down the line. Easier to instlal it now mind.

GPU wise an R9 270/270X would be another £10 on top. You can also get an R9 280 for £140 but that's probably pushing your budget a bit far http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00IRTXPBM/

edit: what cooling solution would you recommend?

Yes, I'm planning on OCing the cpu. I chose the 5930k after looking at cinebench scores (most of the work will be for cinema 4D), and because I just can't afford a 5960k. But if you think 5820K would do just fine, then I'll gladly save $200.

As for the GPU I am waiting for 800 series, (or 900, whatever it is labelled in the end). I was going to use my GTX 570 in the meantime.

Still looking for a 24" monitor for general use, i have read that Foris FG2421 and other 100+ hz tn/va panels are not really good outside of gaming and most of my time is spent browsing internet and other non gaming activities.
What should i buy? Budget is under 400€

You're probably going to have to go with a bigger PSU. Maybe a 750W silver? If you're not going to go dual GPU, there's absolutely no need for a 5930K.

I meant the way the fans are located. I looked it up and they seem to be properly placed.
At idle it sits at 25-32ºC, which seems fine. But as soon as Prime starts it goes up to 98-100, never above that :/.
I`ll remove the cooler, reapply the paste and check everything tomorrow.

Also insofar as budget is concerned i could rack up to 650 need arising

it doesnt show up on pcpartpicker .. its 20 $ =o

Also could someone recommend me the cheapest, high quality 8GB of DDR3-1600 RAM to go with this system? I rarely see RAM go on sale ..

This is a pretty good deal: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/gskill-memory-f312800cl9d8gbxl

Although with DDR4 coming out, DDR3 might start dropping in price. Maybe not though.

Not sure on the fan.

Any PB278Q users here? I'm ready to take the step into 1440p gaming, been looking at many different options ($500 preferred limit) and I've got a GTX 780 @ 1150 MHz. I still haven't found a perfect monitor yet though. I love almost everything about the Asus PB278Q, but I've heard it has rather high input lag (~17 ms).

I play games a lot, not a lot of competitive games though (with a few exceptions like Injustice, Battlefront, Sonic All-stars, etc.) and I'm reluctant to go with a Korean panel because of panel defects and poor build/base quality and RMA coverage. I would appreciate any recommendations; I want the absolute best I can afford within or close to that $500 limit (must be IPS/PLS, nothing "cheap-looking" either, my set-up is gorgeous and I want to keep it that way). The only thing stopping me from getting the PB278Q is the input lag, but I don't know how noticeable it is. Thank you.

Edit: How does the Nixeus Vue 27 compare to anyone that might know? Thanks again.

I'm currently looking at these three Z97 boards.

Asus Z97-A
Gigabyte GA-Z97-GAMING 3
MSI Z97-GAMING 5

I was leaning towards the Asus board, as the simple overclocking software is apparently really good and as a complete newbie I am a little concerned about cocking up when it comes to that stuff. Is overclocking that much of a hassle when doing it through the BIOS on the other boards? If anyone has any good guides they could recommend I'd really appreciate it. I checked the overclocking thread but it seemed like it was tailored to GPU OCing. Apologies if I missed something obvious.

I've also decided to skip on buying a DAC for the moment so I'd like to go with the board that has the best onboard audio if possible.

I've been using this as my main monitor for a while now and I haven't had any noticeable input lag experiences. I play every genre of game under the sun as well. It's probably one of the best monitors I've ever owned. Just wait until you see the step up from 1080p, prepare your jaw ;)

Is there a consensus on which of the new X99 boards is the best value? I still haven't decided on one yet because the last time I had free time for some research, the reviews weren't out yet and they weren't listed online yet.

I'm in no need of something fancy; I'm not going SLI or Crossfire.

That's good. Since mine has 3 connectors on it, I can use it for my optical drive, SSD, and HDD all at once, correct?

Sorry if I'm being annoying, but this is really stressful and I've been at it for about 9 hours.

You're talking about the power cable, right? If so, yeah, you can use all of them like that. Don't worry about asking questions! Thats what we're here for!

Not counting the 5 hours of sleep I got last night, I was just at it for about 13 hours in total.

(...about 4 of which was troubleshooting an ASUS motherboard error code 76 that turned out to be "the AIO you just spent half of last night installing got knocked slightly loose while you were reorienting the tower, time to refasten everything".)

Hey all. Starting to put together the parts for an upgraded PC - my current machine is running a first-gen Core i5-760 that is getting a bit long in the tooth. I'm thinking of picking up a Core i5-4690K and an ASUS Z97-AR mobo to match (can get a decent price on them through Micro Center, and I have one local to me here). Am I likely to regret this with the 5xxx series chips just starting to roll out? It seems like this'd be a pretty solid upgrade from my current setup, and I can take advantage of some of my existing parts (case, 16GB of DDR3 RAM, and PSU).

I have a Radeon 6870 for a video card, and that's getting a bit on the old side too... but I plan to hang on to it at least until the next generation of GPUs hits the market.

From what we've seen, the 5xxx CPU's don't offer anything better for gaming than the 4690k you're looking at (especially if you overclock it). I'd get a new GPU too, but obviously thats totally up to your budget, and you'll still notice an increase just with the new CPU.

Good to know. When the time comes, I'm hoping to get as much GPU as I can for about $200. I'm hoping (perhaps naively) that I might see some good options when nVidia announces their next generation.
