Hey everyone! The best thread on the net rolls on.

I guess I should post something of substance....

I was listening to Scott on the Techreport podcast and I think he gave a great piece of advice. Those of you who built budget builds using the Pentium Anniversary G3258/Z97 combo should consider dropping a Haswell i7 5775C in there when they are widely available.

It is compatible with the same Z97 boards, and in a lot of games testing is showing it outperforming Skylake. Worth a look at least.

So at this point my PC is kind of done. There's no fun in that though. I've got sli 980 tis, 4690k, 32gb ram, and an SSD. Would something like the H100i be worth investing in? Or would I get better performance going with an 4790k or possibly even a skylake build?

There may be other avenues for more noticeable benefits. 4K Gsync TV, SSD for games folder, specialist-level audio.

H100i doesn't give markedly better performance over a say... Noctua air cooler.

If you do start streaming, people say i7 extra threads are helpful.

My Mobo has some dicky shit with audio jacks sometimes that I'm hoping magically goes away if I get another one. I had to disable front headphone jack because if I didn't it constantly said something just got plugged in / unplugged, even when there was nothing there, and it would interrupt sound coming from my pc constantly. Some other people online had a similar issue and nobody could fix it. Also will be switching from a SFF mobo to a full size one, although I do know that you can put a smaller mobo in a larger case.

And if I'm buying a new CPU I sort of feel like I "want" to get the latest one purely for irrational new-cpu-smell reasons. See my avatar for reference on my PC spending habits. Not so bothered by getting DDR4 ram, prices seem to have come down a bit compared to their peak.

I was going through the same dilemma and decided that X99 is a better buy than Z170.

You could now get a 5820K setup for the same price as a 6700K. It might not be a match in single thread performance, but it will have 2 more cores and 4 more threads so anything multi threaded is going to be much faster on it. Also has more L3 cache.

I ran them both in quiet mode so haven't notice any differences in noise level. My Titans X are louder under game load. Haven't had a chance to really test, but it does seem the H110i GTX cools better. Setup was a breeze compare to the CRYORIG. I just had to triple check and make sure there wasn't any leaks before installing. Overall, I like it. Matches my overall color scheme. It lights up white with all my other components.

Not sure what a NVMe version is. I just bought the 256GB M.2 80mm PCIe 3.0 x4 SSD.

I went with the Z170-A. Pro Gaming wasn't available at many places, and the comparison table showed it lacked few things than the Z170-A, but it has the ROG stuff which I don't find compelling.

Nah. If it was easy to swap my 280mm AIO water for air I'd do it. It's pretty pointless. Didn't even raise my max OC limit for benching.

It does have some QC issues. The ROG Swift does as well. I'm on my second. If you can get a good XB it is the best on the market. Maybe put it in the OP with a disclaimer about QC concerns.

Extremely minimal. It's all multi based now.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, just grab a used 4790K and audio card. Really. Save the $$$ for HBM2 which will actually matter a ton.

Acer XB270HU should be mentioned in the OP. It's an overall better monitor than the ROG Swift.

Philips 4065UC should also be mentioned in the 4k section. $800 or so for a 40'' 4k VA Panel.

Broadwell-E will be on 2011-3. Skylake-E will most likely be an entirely new chipset.

While I fully understand that Skylake seems to be not that much of an improvement, I'm currently rocking a stock i5 4670. Would an i7 6700k that I intended to put an aftermarket cooler on and OC be a useful upgrade? Keeping in mind I can't oc my existing chip since I'm a non-k variant.

980ti and G-sync monitor otherwise. I'm kind of hoping to move out of a small form factor case later in the year and get something roomy with good air flow. Maybe even do a closed loop cooler on the CPU if I'm feeling brave.

You can "grow" into a system that has 6+ cores while still enjoying the benefits of today. A X99 + 5820+ DDR4 build should come close in cost to a 6700k build anyway.

If you want a more significant upgrade you could consider a 5820k. I see that others had the same thought.

I'm limited in air cooler size due to my case choice but mine still runs at 4 GHz 24/7 without issues. I haven't tried pushing it higher than that since it's honestly enough, but people report ~4.4 Ghz on air.

Mine is sitting on 4.2 without any issues. I'm fairly sure I can increase that to 4.5 with some extra voltage but I dont feel the extra voltage (and heat) is worth it for that small of a gain.

Another plus for AIO cooling.

Mainly, bought it for looks. The huge air cooler I had just fine.

And, I had to switch the Corsair H110i GTX from top to front. While playing the Witcher 3, the Titans X were releasing lots of heat inside the case, causing the H110i to hit 50+ C, making kick into overdrive and insanely loud. Moving it to the front, allowed it to get fresh cool from the outside, let it stay around ~40 C and still quiet.

No worries, Skylake isn't in the builds yet. I'm catching up and juggling a few things.
Motherboards are always the things that take the longest.

So far:
-In our (AT) testing, this means that in order to install Windows 7 you need to do the following:

Navigate to BIOS
Enable ‘Windows 7 Installation’ or ‘EHCI mode’, Save and Exit.
Have your Windows 7 image on an optical disk. USB sticks will not work!
Install the OS as normal via the optical media. Install OS drivers/USB 3.0 drivers.
Disable the BIOS option.

-Heatsink/Cooler compatability with LGA1155/1150
-25% faster than 2500/2600K
-Thermal limited OC vs Voltage limited (But seemingly same clocks so far?)
-DDR3L (1.35V) vs DDR4 doesn't matter (3L for gaming, 4 for video editing?)

If anyone else has some other Skylake/Z170 take aways I was looking to put a small 'should I upgrade' section to help people. People really itching to upgrade from 2500K/2600K and new builds are the only real candidates I see.

I´m rocking an i5-3450 at stock.

So i´m looking for a new cpu for ~250€, mayyybe 300€. Guessing i´d need a new motherboard too, preferably one that lets me overclock. 150€?

Would it be even worth it? 1080p games @ 60fps, some video rendering here and there.

Rest of the system, 16 GB DDR3, R9 290x, 850W PSU. And i´d keep the rest for now.

I´d usually just google and help myself, but CPUs are all over the place and kinda hard to research with the naming schemes.

SSDs use the same Sata power cables as HDs. Quite often those cables have several connectors, so you may be able to hook the SSD up to the same cable as your HD. You'll also need a SATA data cable, which probably came with your mobo.

That's a molex to sata power connector adapter. You shouldn't need it. The PSU should have plenty of sata connectors. What PSU do you have?

Ok guys, I picked up an SSD last week before making the jump to Windows 10 and ended up impulse purchasing a 970. Now I'm looking for a new monitor. Can anyone give me some insight into these three sets? I'm currently using a 24" Samsung T240HD (a TV more than a monitor, and it's only 1980x900), so any of these are sure to be an upgrade. All three are IPS and are around 24".

This is my current setup and I don't plan on going beyond 1080p gaming for awhile. I'm not interested in the price jump between these monitors and 1440p/4k monitors:

Intel i5 3570
8GB Corsair DDR3
Gigabyte G1 970

As an aside, the wifi card I put into my PC when I built it in 2013 died on me and I replaced it with one of those USB wifi dongles. Since I'm going into my case this weekend anyway to install the new SSD and GPU should I look at new wifi cards? Would I notice any benefit?

I won't be building a Skylake build like many of you guys are, but I did order the Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 last night to replace my GTX 760 that I'm selling to my younger cousin. Going to have to sleep on the ROG Swift or any other G-Sync monitor for that matter though.

Amazon having Acer XB270HU under review seems to show that QC may be better on the ROG Swift, but who knows. Having previous bad experiences with Acer makes me want to stay away from their brand.

Oh that's neat. I still dream of ncase m1 with X99 ITX. I think the EK L120 kit I have would work? Currently cools my 3960x at 4.7Ghz. The only thing is the pump is a little louder than I like, so I was searching up compatible air coolers when I last looked. Problem is my 3960x is an Engineering sample so I can't sell it.
