My dad has a Compaq CQ5700F which has an Athlon II 170u. He wants to upgrade the processor, but him and I are not sure what can be installed here. What's the list of compatible CPUs for this model? I believe the CPU is 95 wats and AMD 3 board, but I'm not sure.

A used Phenom II X3 720 Black for $30 is all I can think to recommend. I believe your dad is working with a 1-core 2ghz chip. 720 gets him 2.8ghz x 3.

Maybe Phenom II X2 570 Black for 3.5ghz x 2 seeing as you won't be OCing at all and better performance per core. Around $30 used too.

You will need a new cooler too.

AM3 is still slow as balls so don't expect miracles.

Guys, I'm having issues with Clonezilla Live USB on my brand new i5 6600 + Asus H170M-Plus.

Basically I've tried both 32 and 64 bit versions, even resorting to failsafe, but it always hangs immediately after selecting the desired boot/video mode. Same results with a slightly (08-2015) older version, so I don't really know what else I might try. By the way, PC works perfectly with Windows 7.

Solved by making my own Live USB off a VERY old Clonezilla build... the very same one I've been using for years!?

You are being too vague.

1) Fans full blast means it has not POST'd usually.
2) Fans spin down to reasonable speeds mean its POST'd
3) You need to remove the GPU totally from the system and plug the display into the onboard GPU from the motherboard output. Simply plugging into the Mobo output wont work since the GTX 780 is disabling the onboard GPU when it is plugged into the Mobo.
4) Try only 1 stick of RAM, and test both sticks in both slots seperatly.
5) Check the 8 pin CPU power and 24 Pin ATX power cables are plugged in.

Most boards dont come with with a speaker anymore, usually the case comes with one that you plug into the board SPKR header. So we cannot determine anything from beeps.

I got this PSU to fit in my Node 304 by removing the PSU bracket and pushing the PSU back as far as possible such that it doesnt foul the GPU. To remove the PSU bracket, you have to unscrew 4 screws. Then to hold the PSU in place, i zip tied the 24pin ATX cable to the case fan grill under the PSU itself through the honeycomb holes. So it will take a bit of thinking to get it all to fit nicely.

There was a time when the fairs around TCR had some great deals on new hardware, but the internet kinda put a bullet in that. If you're on a very tight budget there might be some second hand older gen bargains, but be sure they test everything in front of you.

So the mobo im using i use to use it as a htpc fwith an 15 3330. But now im using that mobo with my personal 3770k and it dont work. I decided to throw my i5 back in there and it works again with the onboard dvi.

Wait for Pascal mid-to-high range, and get one of those? Then next year, upgrade your CPU/MOBO/RAM combo?

Sure that works, i choose to remove 4 screws such that i can fit a normal PSU, one that is a lot quieter than the SFX ones. Its not that difficult i have photos in this thread to show what i did if you like. Cant really go wrong imo.

The coolermAster V550S or V650S also would work without any modding, they are 140mm length. Most ATX PSUs are 160mm like the Corsair i chose.

Also why go for Haswell over Skylake when there is only £50 in it? Your getting tons of new features on the Z170 chipset that make it worthwhile when spending this much money on a build.

Haven't played them in some time tried to play today, Dark Souls 1 gets stuck in black screen - if I leave it on for 5 minutes I get the "This game uses Auto Save..." and when I press OK it gets stuck again, not interested in finding out for how long.
Dark Souls 2 seems to work somehow, but in the beginning "Checking Save Data" and when loading save it takes longer than before and the animation stops, so I assume it gets stuck too.
HDD croaking or something else? Only thing I remember changing is getting new soundcard, no idea if that can be causing it.
Updating my drivers to 362.00 right now and checking if reboot helps..

EDIT: Reboot and newer drivers had no effect. Any ideas?
Could be happening in other games too, haven't tried.

Of course I want to improve on the PS4 that I am currently using but being able to play old arcade games as well as possible was always my priority.

Tried, not sure if it happens as I'm not that familiar with the other games, so no freezing in them at least.
I don't want to suspect the HDD as it's fairly new got it last year and it has worked without problems so far - if it was the HDD Dark Souls 1 should at least work right?

The GPU would still be slightly louder in my experience though (i have the same MSI 970). The SFX PSUs are louder inherently as they incorporate a smaller fan, therefore must spin faster to achieve the same airflow. The 2 Coolermaster PSUs would me a middle ground solution.

Much faster for certain tasks, games that are highly threaded and are cpu biased will greatly benefit.

They don't drop value since there is no competition from AMD vs Intel 6/8 core.

I dont think its enough reason to get the 4790k over the 6700k though. You can easily OC it without having to do much, the 6700k's overclock much better overall and seem not to suffer from temperature limiting as much as the Haswell's.

Only very rarely does the screen post, when i take off my AIO cooler off the cpu, and i do some combinations of clearing the CMOS

In heavily parallel workloads the 5930K and 5960X will see a noticeable performance lead due to the extra cores.

It is very difficult to answer this question without looking at the particular application

Well, thats a shame and I wish I had known such before pulling the trigger during the sale as my budget isnt enough to go for the i7-6700k at full retail. It was a stretch to even pay £190 for the i7-4790k, however I cant be too mad as three months ago I was dead set on getting a G3258!

Its most likely the mobo, which will be the worst thing that can happen. Trying to buy a mini itz z77 board now is crazy expensive.

Agree. I prefer the DS4 but the Xbone pad is the new standard game pad, the wireless stick works well too although it's physically bigger than most USB sticks and would block any adjacent ports. Use an extension cable to avoid this.

Really not Xbone hands down.

You use one application and a DS4 is as compatible with even more customizability than the 360/Xbone controller.

Whichever controller you like best, use that one.

No no no, don't even think of going AM3 with that budget. You could build a medium/high end PC so you could also play games at good enough settings beside other things. Do you need an Atx case?

I want to buy either an Xbox one or ps4 controller to play dark souls 3 on my Windows 10 PC.

Which of these two has the easiest set up? Ideally I would like to plug it in and play it with the default controls without doing and xpadder stuff.

It an be wired or wireless, doesn't matter.

Which would you rather use? Xbone controller is plug and play but the DS4 only requires a single application which is extremely easy to set up and requires no manual mapping of inputs or anything like that. It's just a 5mb application install and youre good to go.

My PSU has an 8 and 6 pin power cable, which is fine for my 970 but the 980ti I was getting needs two lots of 8 pins. Is there going to be an issue if I use a 6 to 8 pin adapter for one of them?

PSU is a cooler master 800w silent pro gold.

No, it will be fine. The extra pins are Ground iirc. As long as there is sufficient Amps on the 12V rail on the PSU (model would help) then there won't be an issue.

It has:
PCI-e 6+2 pins x 3

Those are PCIE 8pin connectors, you don't need an adapter.
